Literally. Someone broke into my house today and stole a lot of stuff from me. Computers, PS3, games, blu rays, all of my wife's jewelry, cash, cigarettes, fuck you name it. Over $6000 worth of stuff. They'll get 500 bucks for all of it, get high for the weekend and be back in "business" early next week. I'm not a happy camper right now.

that freaking SUCKS! hopefully you had insurance--it can really come in handy at a time like this. had the same thing happen (didn't have as much stuff to take, being 22 and broke works to one's advantage sometimes) and had renter's insurance... got everything back and then some. (note: I realize homeowner's insurance differs from renter's insurance. same idea, though)

That is very true. Our duplex thing got broken into along with 14 others in columbia last christmas and if I would have had the serial #'s for all the tv's or even 10$ a month worth of renter's insurance it wouldn't have been a big deal but instead I lost all my shit

This is why I like being poor and living in an apartment. #1: no nice shit to steal. (I have a PS2, no Blu-Rays, a relatively-crappy 32" 720p, a crappy low-end Compaq, my wife dislikes jewelry, and I don't have cash in the house.) #2: it's actually not that easy to break into an apartment, at least mine. (It's a small building with 8 units per floor, and mine is on the 2nd floor so no window-entering. Plus, it's a corner unit and the windows in both rooms are uncovered, so they'd look pretty obvious.)

I don't own a house, so--much like giving people advice on child-rearing--I speak only from my ass. But, if I did own a house, I would get ADT or Brinks or something.

I agree. The only good thief is a dead thief. Several years ago I took individual pic's of all my firearms ,printed them out on my home printer and wrote the descriptions and serial #s on the back of each pic. And I made them in 8 x 10 size and have them in a lock box at the bank. I need to do that with the rest of my valuables but like most haven't.

Sorry Mr. Flopnuts, I know this will be a long day for you. I'll bet a security system would have run them off.

Another good idea yhat only takes a few minutes is to walk through your house with a video camera and just scan everything, that way at least the police can see it was yours if it is ever recovered.

This has happened to me before. It's a horrible feeling. Any insurance people on here probably don't like to hear this but you need to exaggerate about what got stolen. If you just claim what actually got stolen you won't get anywhere near the money you lost.

Oh and the only way they will get caught is if the cops pull them over with all your crap in their car. They don't put a high priority on finding home burglars unless there has been a string of them in the same area.

Which is exactly what is wrong with America and people now a days. I know what you're sayin, but this is why it forces the insurance companies to continue to raise rates. It's a circle that will never heal itself because everybody feels like well, everybody else does it so I might as well.

Sorry to hear it Flopnuts. Been through it myself. While most of it was just stuff, we were really upset about losing our home videos (no nothing dirty) that had been in our camera bag. Those were the only things that couldn't be replaced. Beyond that, it felt like a huge violation of our privacy/security especially since we lived in a pretty decent neighborhood.

Actually, that is not what I was told by my insurance company when I was robbed while living in Denver. (I think I actually posted my experience on that here.)

Someone/people broke into my house and stole all of my electronics, TV, computers, etc. I did the police report and everything and a few days later my insurance company had me call a number. I've forgotten who they were, but they said they worked with the insurance company in getting everything back. I remember talking to the guy for an hour about this and he said my insurance rate will NOT increase because I'd been paying insurance for over 10 years without any incidents.

HE said to me that I can order anything I wanted: If I wanted a 50" plasma TV, it was mine. If I wanted a state-of-the art home theater system, it was mine. And none of this would affect my insurance premiums and he was right.

Now, I don't know much about insurance companies/scams, etc., but that was my experience and I got everything back- all in new and upgraded conditions. And no, I didn't get the 50" plasma TV.

We were robbed a while back while we still lived in Edmond. It was about 1:30am. They broke into my Suburban, stoled my chainsaw, aviation headset and some change and cash I had in the console. They also opened the garage and started taking stuff out of it... Then they tried to come inside. YES Come in side as we were sleeping... The alarm went off and they fleed. Never found them or our stuff..

But I had kids in the house. it was very tramatic for them to say the least.

Sorry to hear that Flop. I know how you feel. A buddy and I rented a house when we got out of college and were burgled. It pissed us off no end. The house had no garage so anyone could tell when we weren't there. They got the typical stuff, TV, VCRs, cameras, etc.. We had no renters insurance so it was a loss we couldn't recover. It wasn't so much the money, it was that someone broke in and stole our stuff. Piss ants!

Funny you should say that, Mr. Brock.

My sister had an item (an antique soda machine) stolen about a year ago. The perp offered the machine for sale on e-bay about two days later. My sister saw the item, recognized it, and called the police. She was able to recover the machine by telling the police about engraved initials on the bottom which sufficed for identification and proof of ownership ... so far as the authorities were concerned.

Anyhow, the police called on the perps, checked the machine, retrieved and returned it, and my sister was able to, once again, make sodas. Meanwhile, the terrible perps simply received a warning and a slap on the penis because my sister elected not to pursue charges against them.

It was incredibly stupid of the thieves to offer the thing on e-bay ... particularly so soon after stealing it. Perhaps Mr. Mr. Flopnuts should start checking places like e-bay.

Over $6000 worth of stuff. They'll get 500 bucks for all of it, get high for the weekend and be back in "business" early next week. I'm not a happy camper right now.

Sorry to hear that Mr. Flopnuts.

I think you should be okay. If you have house insurance, look into that policy. They may be able to reimburse you on your stolen goods.

*On a positive note, as long as you and your wife are not hurt, thats what really matters. Just trying to look at the bright side of this situation.

thanks everyone for the well wishes. We live in abottom corner apartment surrounded by woods. There was a lot of activity yesterday with landscapers and construction workers and my manager here saw a guy coming from my building with 2 big duffel bags slung over his shoulders. She felt bad for not stopping him, but how could she? I don't blame her. She's good people. All I have is my phone so I haven't been able to post or even read the thread before now. It's been a busy day, I won't be back around until tonight. But to answer a couple of questions, the 21 year old cop that came was super nice but didn't even try for fingerprints or anything. The thief pried my slider door open to gain entry, and we are insured. It's a minor setback from a financial standpoint, but my file box with all of my receipts and so forth was taken. So we'll see how that goes. Wish me luck. Thanks again all.

Sounds like he might have gotten your SSNs. That sucks.

As for the door, you might want to saw off a broom handle and put it in the slot. The glass can obviously still be broken, but that would be far more obvious.

I'd say good luck, but that ship has sailed. I just hope your bad luck doesn't get any worse.

I second those who suggested a dog. I know they can be a pain and many people don't like animals in their homes, but my dog goes absolutely nuts at the slightest noise outside and I guaran****ingtee if anyone came messing around my door when we're gone, they will be moving on as soon as they hear her.

Good union burglars are not deterred by pets. I got hit in 1998. They cleaned out the house like the Grinch cleaned out Whoville. There were several neighbors that got hit. Many of them with dogs.

They would pry open a door about three inches and wait for the dog to come barking at the door. Then reach through and taze him. KO's the dog cold. Push him into an adjoining room. room and close the door. They'd clean out houses in a matter of minutes and were gone.

Cops were useless throughout.

Don't expect to find your shit at pawn shops. A good burglar has real fences to move shit that don't include reputable pawn brokers.

Man, that really stinks. I'm sorry to hear about it.

Maybe we can help identify the culprit. What do we know about them?

First off, they likely live in your town. Criminals are lazy.
Second, there's a good chance they're on my stolen bike.
They smoke, or otherwise they wouldn't steal the cigarettes.
They're young, hence the theft of the games.

Did they steal all the games and blu rays, or did they leave any? For example, if they left your Starship Troopers blu ray, we know that they have discriminating tastes. If they left your movies that star Halle Berry and Salma Hayek, we know they're either gay or women (but not gay women).

This, I've known many a low lives during my time and a dog means nothing to an experienced burglar. The ones I knew were all active prior to the widespread adoption of tasers so they would use more traditional methods such as dog treats and tricking the animals into going in a bathroom and locking the door.

If someone really wants your shit then it can be stolen. Best things you can do is make it as hard as possible for them to sell the items by recording and reporting serial numbers to the police.

FTR, just because I've known these people doesn't mean I endorse what they did. I told them back then they were pieces of shit for stealing people's shit. I have a very low opinion of thieves and particularly for thieves that steal from individuals or mom and pop businesses.

Oh, and sorry about your shit flop. I had an apartment get broken into twice in a 4 month period. It was in a complex that I later found out had the nickname of "Vietnam". My friend who had a sister live there and once he found out I lived there he was fond of asking about my tour in "'Nam."

Sorry to hear about that. What sucks the most is if you lose stuff with memories attached. Hogfarmer has some very good advice to have pix of all your stuff. You can also walk thru your house with a video camera and pick up each item, describe it, etc. If it has a serial #, put all those on some paper and put it (edit: video tape AND recorded serial #'s) in your safe deposit box.

Regarding dogs, those require a pretty big commitment from you as an owner. I've owned Shepards, several Rottweilers (my personal favs), and currently have a Pitt/Rott mix who is a rescue (ex fighter we named Chopper). Be forewarned that owning a Pit Bull or Rottweiler can cause your homeowners insurance to be cancelled.

It was a lockbox with papers and receipts and shit in it. I figured the guy took it because it was locked and he wanted to get inside of it somewhere safe. He was disappointed when he did.

my first year in new haven, we had a chow that was very protective of us and our property...

at least we thought so until a group of young burglars decided to kick in the door of our apartment and steal everything that wasn't nailed down...

actually they didn't steal it all, they threw everything they could at the dog...

then the stupid dog wouldn't let the police in and they almost shot him...

never have gotten completely over that feeling of being violated...

Interestingly enough, we never have had it before. The place we're living requires 100k of personal insurance, and I added property loss and earthquake to it because it was so cheap. We didn't have a lot of crazy nice stuff, but we had an accumulation that added up. Plus, I'm convinced something spooked this guy. There was a lot of stuff left behind that was worth money. He left me my newest PS3 game I just bought, so at least he was benevolent.

What cracks me up with those Brinks commercials is that they basically tell you the monitoring service is useless since the guy takes off as soon as the alarm goes off. And what's bullshit is none of those companies will come install a system in your house without you agreeing to a service plan.

The info I sent was on a good temporary/portable system. It required a minimal service plan, (like 1 month) and you just send the equipment back afterwards. Security systems are a decent deterrent but if the thief knows what he's doing there's no stopping him.

I bought a portable system when I first moved into my house, it worked fine but all someone would've had to do is go to the kitchen where it was sitting on the counter and unplug it to shut it off. I figured it would at least scare off an amateur and it was nice having the chime system for the doors so we would be able to tell if our young son wandered out of the house without us knowing.

My parents bought these little stick-on things (probably at Wal-Mart, since they're seniors and live in FL) that go on your windows and doors, with the magnet stuck on the other side, and if you open the window or door they have a loud alarm screech.

I once had my car broken into and my radio stolen. This in itself is not remarkable, unless I point out that a.) the car was a sweet stylin' 1991 Hyundai Excel white hatchback (a whopping six grand brand-new) and b.) the radio was a cheap-shit Kenwood low-end, cost me around $100. Talk about a thief with low standards...

Yeah cops, generally will not check for fingerprints..

First I would check the local trash dumpsters for anything they dumped like your receipts.. Then go to all the pawnshops in a 20mile radius.. Also a flea market/ swap n meet if you have any by you..
Craiglist is also a good bet..

If you bought the electronics at a best buy you can see if they still have the s/n in their system..
