<!-- end toutImageHTML --> <!-- start articleShareHTML --> <!-- end articleShareHTML --> <!-- start articleHTML --> Golden Girl Rue McClanahan (http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20094976,00.html), 76, has died.

"She passed away at 1 a.m. this morning," her manager, Barbara Lawrence, tells PEOPLE. She had a massive stroke."

McClanahan, who played Blanche Deveraux on the still-popular '80s sitcom Golden Girls, had suffered a minor stroke earlier this year while recovering from bypass surgery. Lawrence added that at the time of her death Thursday, McClanahan “had her family with her. She went in peace.” <!-- jump -->

Still in syndication, Golden Girls ran on NBC from 1985 to 1992. Only last year, McClanahan's costar, Beatrice Arthur, died (http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20274866,00.html) from cancer. Estelle Getty died (http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20213964,00.html) in 2008. Surviving star Betty White is currently enjoying a remarkable resurgence in her career, having recently hosted Saturday Night Live.

It always cracked me up that, for how reserved my grandmother was and is, her two 'must see' shows that I can recall [outside of Lawrence Welk and Johnny Carson] were Three's Company and The Golden Girls, two of the more 'risque' sitcoms of their respective times.

RIP, rue.

I'd never seen the Golden Girls until a couple years back when they were rerunning after some show I'd like and I didn't bother changing the channel. (It just seemed like so much hassle to pick up the remote...)

It was actually pretty funny. It seemed like one of the four got a marriage proposal every other episode, which seemed kind of suspicious, and there was less of the scorching, dead loneliness that I associate with old age, but in a way that was kind of heartening as I consider my own future.

The Golden Girls was ahead of its time. It tackled topics like sex, divorce, death, adultery, interracial dating (in a serious manner, not honky jokes like the Jeffersons), and other controversial times way before any other sitcom. It's one of the few shows from the 80s you can watch today and it doesn't seem like it's 20+ years old.

I would've cast them in a movie together. That'd be a great trio for some kind of road movie.

Golden Girls was "risque"?????????????????

I must have not realized that.

For it's time on primetime network TV, what little I saw of it. It was a good bit of elderly sex jokes and transforming Betty White's youth into a string of 'Mary Jane' jokes. And Rue's character was SatC's Samantha before Samantha.

It and Married w/Children were the two most sexual innuendo centered sitcoms of the time.

I mean it's not debauched or sleazy, and it's certainly been surpassed in years since, but it did have a stag/burlesque vibe to it's humor. Again, what little I saw.

And in the interest of further hedging, I was talking in terms of the juxtoposition of my Gma's demeanor and what she chose as her FAVORITE shows. Seinfeld, Cheers, Family Ties, Cosby Show, Dynasty, Dallas, etc, etc., could be showing their strongest shows and Gma wouldn't be bothered to turn her head, but if GG or 3'sComp were on, even in reruns, and she was front and center.

That's a shame. Estelle was my favorite, constantly calling Blanche a slut. But you needed Blanche to make that joke work, and Rue was perfect for it. She'll be missed.

The future looks bleak for Betty White, btw.
