This was a very difficult ranking and not because of all the top-notch talent. Actually, this group is not very deep and it includes several unknown commodities. It may become a strong group, but right now, this unit as a whole is a big question mark in the AFC West.

1. Richard Seymour (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=2554), Oakland: Seymour is, by far, the best defensive lineman in this division. It’s not even close. Still, Seymour, who is entering his second season in Oakland, has plenty to prove. Seymour, 30, has to show he is still in his prime and he can bounce back from an inconsistent first season in Oakland.

2. Luis Castillo (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=8443), San Diego: Castillo is a nice player. But he probably should be the second-best defensive lineman in a division. He’s solid, not great.

3. Glenn Dorsey (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=11239), Kansas City: This was tough. I guess I still believe in Dorsey. But he has to show more in this third NFL season. He was expected to be much better than he has shown so far.

4. Jacques Cesaire (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=4854), San Diego: A solid journeyman. He should be lower on this list next year if other players develop as expected.

5. Tyson Jackson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=12435), Kansas City: Like Dorsey, Jackson has to show up better than his rookie season. He was nowhere near as productive as the No. 3 overall pick is expected to be. But he’s a hard worker and he should make strides in his second season.

6. Justin Bannan (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=3667), Denver: This free-agent pickup is underrated. He’s versatile and he knows how to play winning football.

7. Jamal Williams (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=1643), Denver: The former Charger may be on his last leg. But until he hangs it up, this massive nose tackle has to be respected.

8. Tommy Kelly (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=5968), Oakland: Kelly is a big, well-paid man. But he is an underachiever.

9. Lamarr Houston (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=13277), Oakland: Houston was drafted in the second round this year to help Oakland’s terrible run defense. The tackle looks like he will be very active.

10. Jarvis Green (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=3654). Denver: This free-agent pickup is a decent pro. He’ll help Denver.

11. Vaughn Martin (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=12688), San Diego: The second-year player is an interesting prospect. He is very raw, but talented.

12. Cam Thomas (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=13470), San Diego: I like this fifth-round steal. Expect him to get a chance to replace Williams right away.

13. Wallace Gilberry (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=11809), Kansas City: This is a diamond in the rough. Gilberry is a project who has nice pass-rush skills.

Jamal Williams also had the best "overall rating" of all these defensive lineman according to Pro Football Focus in 2008 and 2007. His triceps injury in 2009 was a fluke and a blessing in disguise because it made him fresher for 2010.

Tyson Jackson doesn't belong on any list unless it is a list of biggest bust in franchise history. I hope Tyson Jackson can end up becoming a sack monster this year, but that is based on wishfull thinking not performance from last year.

It doesn't matter what you say his job was, he didn't do it. His first year he couldn't do anything, he was the opposite of good.
I know that if Tyson Jackson's only job was to suck he would be going to the freaking pro bowl.
Hell, might be first year nerves and in the future he might turn into Reggie White for all I know, but the tape from last year says he makes bad look lazy and his name belongs nowhere on this list.

I'm feeling the same way about my team.After the way we finished the 2nd half of last year there is not a single Denver D player that should be on any best of lists anywhere.
I can't wait until the season starts to see how we have improved.

While I've been disappointed GD & TJ haven't lived up to some's expectations, I think GD was coming along the the 2nd half & didn't he finally register his 1st sack vs Denver to close out the season ? TJ is a rookie so I can hardly get down on him so fast, & hasn't it been repeated like gospel on here that every dlman needs 3 yrs to really show their true form? Yet so many here are already writing them off even though everyone was geeked well GD fell in our lap...

I'm just trying to remain optimistic, & give these guys a fair shake, esp. now that Romeo is here & we can move past advanced slap fighting drills!!
