I just don't know if I could do this. Kinda like that guy Aron Ralston who got trapped under that rock.

Trapped man attempts to sever his own arm to survive

New York (CNN) -- Trapped in the basement by a broken furnace for three days and the only hope for survival is to cut off your own arm.

Certainly a horrifying tale, but reality for Jonathan Metz, 31, of West Hartford, Connecticut.

Metz had been trapped in his basement for two days when he smelled rotting flesh and realized his only hope to stay alive was to amputate his left arm that was trapped by a furnace. So he made a tourniquet just below his shoulder and sawed through 90 percent of his arm before he passed out.

Luckily, neighbors realized they had not seen Metz for a few days and called police, who were able to rescue Metz with the aid of firefighters.

According to West Hartford Fire Chief Matt Stuart, rescuers ripped apart the furnace using heavy tools to free Metz and completed the amputation. The arm could not be reattached due to infection.

In a news conference on Thursday, trauma doctors from Hartford's St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center who atended Metz recounted what happened.

"His arm was dying and once that happens, you release toxins and he did mention the smell so he knew something wasn't right," explained Dr. Scott Ellner.

The doctors said there was probably a nerve that got in the way of Metz finishing the amputation. He will have to undergo a few more surgeries to make the arm viable for a prosthetic, but he is expected to survive.

As of Friday morning, Metz was in muscle graft surgery with Ellner.

Dr. David Shapiro was inspired by Metz's actions saying, "The way that he did it was frightening, admirable, horrifying, brave, and just amazing to us."

Metz was trying to repair his furnace when he got trapped. He drank some water leaking from the furnace in an effort to survive.

there was a similar story a while back about a hiker who got pinned between a rock or something/ rock fell on him etc. he cut off his arm at the elbow ( ithink) with a MF pocket knife and walked to get help.

Bet that dude was in and out consciousness the whole fucking time he was cutting. That takes balls the size of Alaska, I have no idea if I'd be capable of doing anything like that and I hope I never find out.

Someone was going to do it...

In all honesty, I'm not sure if I could do it or not. I really don't think anyone can honestly answer the question until they are actually in that moment. Probably depends on the "tools" you have available to do the job as well.

I think you're remembering a guy several years ago (late 90s, early 2000s) that got pinned by a tree he was cutting and cut off his own LEG with a pocket knife. The compound fracture to his femur started the job for him, IIRC.

Unless I've missed something, he's talking about the guy Aron Ralston, the guy mentioned in the OP.

Dude basically amputated his own arm with a fucking Gerber Multitool.

Crazy how that works, I was responsible for first aid instruction the Navy, now I can't deal with it, at all.

I think more of us probably could than we think.

Survival insinct is crazy strong.

When you're smelling your own flesh rotting, you're probably going to resort to some pretty extreme measures.

Well remember, I'm smelling my cock rotting at that point. I'd say that kind of shock in and of itself is probably going to drive me to action.

All bets are off at that point.

Hypothetically, I wonder what would happen if he had been trapped down there near a water faucet and 50 crates of power bars, crackers, and raisins. Would he just ride it out until the house sold?

say it was your cock and balls.

Lets just say, I would rather hack off an arm, than my dangler and the twins.

On the other hand, unless a guy was working on the furnace naked, or trying to screw it, the odds of getting ones pecker and the boys pinned under it, would be limited to say the least.

And porn. In that scenario, let's hope he's right-handed.

But, to answer your question, I'd doubt that he'd live. It sounds like the infection was pretty nasty at decision time.

If he had to shit and piss all over himself for a few weeks, that may be reason enough to cut off your own arm.

Seems to me the guy wasn't trapped all that bad when he could make a tourniquet and reach for a saw.

Seriously, how is there a saw sitting there within arm's length of the guy?

I really gotta know who determined it was 90% detached? I mean, did a paramedic get out there with some calipers? Did somebody go to college to make the determination? Was he really only about 40% of the way through his arm but the teller of the story gave him more because they respected the effort? Many questions about this....
