Mini-Camp Practice #1 Report (http://www.bobgretz.com/chiefs-football/mini-camp-practice-1-report.html)

With the exception of two guys wearing zebra shirts, it was pretty hard to tell the difference between the 12 Chiefs OTA sessions and the first practice of the club’s three-day mini-camp that went down Friday morning at the team’s facility.

A pair of active NFL officials were on the field to help out as 86 of 87 players took part in the 90-minute session. As always, the only guy missing was restricted free agent S Jarrad Page who has not signed his tender offer.

The officials will also be in the meetings this week with players, watching tape and providing input.

“It’s an opportunity for us to learn a little bit,” said Chiefs head coach Todd Haley. “They are going to help explain and detail from their perspective. It’s an effort to try to educate and learn and eliminate penalties.”

The focus of the practice was review, as better than 90 percent of what the Chiefs worked on Friday morning they’ve done before. The practice plan was very basic on both sides of the ball, with the only difference being some extra plays of team work.

“That gives us a little more time to evaluate some of the guys that we didn’t get to see quite as much of in the OTAs,” said Haley. “We also had some one-on-ones there with the O-Line and D-Line and this afternoon we’ll have the receivers and DBs go against each other.”

Some Friday morning mini-camp observations:

QB Brodie Croyle took part in some of the position work and the 7-on-7 passing drill, but did not take any snaps in team work. He’s still coming back from the injury to his right index finger that he suffered two weeks ago.

Not practicing was a familiar group of names: WR Quinten Lawrence, WR Lance Long, CB Brandon Flowers, RB Jamaal Charles and TE Brad Cottam.

Offensively, the Chiefs were very, very basic in this practice, as most of the throws from the quarterbacks were within five yards of the line of scrimmage. They did finish with a flea-flicker on a double reverse pitch back to QB Matt Cassel whose deep throw to WR Dwayne Bowe fell incomplete. Maybe the only other deep throw of the morning was a Matt Gutierrez to Jeremy Horne pass that Horne could not pull in for the completion.

The No. 1 defense had Demorrio Williams and Corey Mays at inside linebacker and Jon McGraw back at safety with Eric Berry.

In their special teams segments the Chiefs worked on their punt protection and the transition to punt coverage.

Canadian LB Cory Greenwood worked as the second-team long snapper in the punt situations.

RB Kestahn Moore had a nice run again; it seems like at least once a practice he’ll rip off a nice play.

Rookie TE Tony Moeaki had a nice catch on a drag route underneath the deep secondary.

For the first time in the off-season, defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel’s voice was heard, as he was in DE Alex Magee’s ear at one point.

Weather conditions were hot and muggy – very muggy – although a heavy overcast kept the sun covered.

Cassel's deep ball to Bowe was incomplete huh?

That's not surprising at all. I bet it floated up there like a duck and was 5 yds too short.

After reading this report, I wondered how long it would take some idiot to post that. Congrats on being today's Cassel bashing idiot!

Cottam has a career threatening neck injury that doctors arent clearing him to play or practice with. It has nothing to do with him being a pussy.

With our additions this offseason (urban and DMC) Id be surprised if Lawrence and Long make the roster anyway.

Canadian LB Cory Greenwood worked as the second-team long snapper in the punt situations.

Is that a new position? I am familiar with inside linebacker, outside, weak side, strong side, middle, etc. Does a Canadian linebacker cover the northern part of the field? ;)

From the Truman Sports Complex

The Chiefs wrapped up the first day of their weekend mini-camp with an afternoon practice that was quite a bit hotter and more uncomfortable than the Friday morning session at their facility.

It was hot and it was humid as the team rolled through a 90-minute session that pretty much stuck to the focus from the morning workout: review and fundamentals.

The receivers and running backs had some one-on-one drills against the defensive backs and linebackers and that provided some glimpses into what type of athletes are currently on the roster.

There were 85 players on the field. Punter Dustin Colquitt was missing. No official word on his absence but he and his wife are expecting their third child any day now.

Some observations from the afternoon session:
•The same group that missed the morning workout watched the afternoon session as well: Charles, Flowers, Cottam, Lawrence and Long. QB Brodie Croyle threw a handful of passes during the afternoon work. It’s apparent there’s no long-term problem with that right index finger because in the 7-on-7 portion he drilled a couple of throws.
•Croyle was also picked off in the 7-on-7 by fellow Alabama product Javier Arenas. He grabbed a tipped ball and was off to the races.
•When the Chiefs went to the team work portion, the offense ran several plays out of the Wildcat, with RB Thomas Jones taking the snaps, including a hand-off to WR Dexter McCluster on an end around.
•QB Matt Cassel and WR Chris Chambers hooked up on a nice deep ball. Cassel threw the ball away from the trailing defensive back and Chambers went down and caught the ball low and maintained control.
•K Ryan Succop was not bothered by a change in holder with Colquitt gone. QB Tyler Palko jumped in and held as Succop hit seven of seven FGs, all from between 28 and 31 yards. There was a considerable cross wind out of the south that he was forced to deal with.
•As you can surmise, FGs and FG defense was the focus during the afternoon special teams segments.
•We got a clear view of the RBs and TEs against the LBs in one-on-one pass coverage and an occasional glimpse through the bodies of the WRs against the DBs. Here are some observations from that drill:
•RB Thomas Jones ran two great routes to get open, one against Derrick Johnson and the other against David Herron. However, on the second one Jones dropped the ball.
•Rookie TE Leroy Banks continues to show up, catching a pair of passes in this drill and beating Andy Studebaker and Johnson, who he ran away from on his second catch.
•OLB Tamba Hali was asked to do something he’s seldom going to do and that’s pick up a receiver short and cover him down the field. He was badly beaten by TE Tony Moeaki and RB Kestahn Moore.
•CB Travis Daniels did a nice job of breaking up a deep throw for WR Terrance Copper.
•Rookie LB Cory Greenwood showed very good athleticism in his coverage opportunities, running very well and showing agility.
•McCluster ran past CB Maurice Leggett on a deep sideline route. Leggett, who was probably the fastest player on last year’s team, showed some closing speed, but McCluster founda second gear and caught the ball running away from the coverage.

Just goes to show that 40 time is not always the best indicator of speed. IIRC McCluster ran in the 4.5's but it looks like he is probably one of if not the fastest person on this team.
