unlike the tasing of the guy who jumped on the baseball field, the cop probably did the right thing.

she pushed him and it looked like it could turn into a 2-on-1 jumping really quick. He could legitimately be in fear for his safety.

punch her, tase her or pull his gun .......... punching is actually safer than a taser. imo

Background:

SEATTLE -- Seattle police are investigating what they call an assault of an officer in South Seattle.

However, a police officer is seen punching a 17-year-old girl in the face during the incident captured by a video camera on Monday.

According to Seattle police, the incident began when an officer spotted a man jaywalking in the 3100 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Way S. at approximately 3:10 p.m. The man was some 15 feet away from a pedestrian overpass, police said.

The officer was talking to the man when he saw four young women jaywalk across the same street at the same spot. The officer asked the women to step over to his patrol car, but the women were being "verbally antagonistic toward the officer," according to officials.

One of the women, later identified as a 19 year old, began to walk away from the scene despite the officer's instructions, prompting the officer to walk over to her and escort her back to his patrol car.

The girl then "began to tense up her arm, and pull away from the officer while yelling at him," investigators said. The officer told the girl to place her hands on his patrol car, but she refused. When the officer tried to grab hold of her, "she pulled away and twisted, breaking free of the officer's grip several times," the blotter report said.

When the officer tried to handcuff the girl, another girl, this one 17 years old, intervened and placed her hands on the officer's arm, "causing the officer to believe she was attempting to physically affect the first subject's escape," police said.

The officer pushed back the second girl, but the girl came back at him. The officer then punched her, police said.

The officer then handcuffed the 19-year-old woman. Other officers arrived and helped handcuff the second girl.

Both teens were cited for jaywalking. The older suspect was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of obstructing an officer. The 17-year-old girl was booked into the Youth Service Center for investigation of assault of an officer.

Nobody was injured during the incident, police said.

Seattle police have not reviewed the video of the incident. Sgt. Sean Whitcomb said investigators may review the video on Tuesday.

Whitcomb said the officer involved in the incident sent out a call for help, prompting other officers to rush to his aid.

All use of force on the job is reviewed, Whitcomb said, as use of force is under the officer's discretion. He added that punching is a trained tactic.

"There will be a thorough investigation into this incident," he said.

I saw nothing wrong with this video prior to reading the article. After reading the article, I believe the officer used the proper reaction to this situation. Why people think it's okay to place your hands on an officer making an arrest is beyond me. If this officer is suspended, then something is incredibly wrong.

No, of course not. It's only okay because she was a damn dirty ******.

Are you kidding me?

What the hell should the guy have done? Look at how quickly that thing could have gone horribly horribly awry. With 2 people involved, he could've ended up in a very messy situation in a hurry. Instead he flipped the girl a quick jab and ended the escalation.

It's absolutely pathetic that some people would attempt to make this a race issue.

Watched it again - the girl gave him a two-handed shove and squared up to him. She brought her hands up into an aggressive posture.

If a man does that, he gets a billy club to the jaw. That was a fighting move under any definition of the term.

Don't shove a cop, don't get knocked out.

I'm pretty sure that even the most minimally-observant person watching the video would notice that the cop is White and the girls are Black.

That being said, I wonder if the girls would have responded this way to a Black officer? Also, I wonder if the "verbal antagonism" displayed by the girls was racial in nature?

That's what makes it hilarious. It was just Jaywalking. All the cop is going to do is give you a freaking ticket....that they never would've paid any goddamn way.

Instead the bitch has to get ballsy and try to walk away, then resist arrest and her retard friend decides it's a good idea to assist in her resist (like that rhyme?) and in turn gets a straight jab to the nose.

If there was a pedestrian overpass, it's probably a pretty busy road.

I've seen cops ding folks for jaywalking if you're talking about a major thoroughfare and I really don't have a problem with it. That's a danger to motorists as much as pedestrians.

Hehe.

A friend of mine was driving to work one morning when she approached a red stoplight. By the time she got to the light, the light had already turned green. The SUV on the left was just about to get moving....and she couldn't see anything to the left because of the line of stopped cars...she continued on through the green light. Apparently, someone was crossing the street even though the light was green.

As she passed, the person walked right into her car, smashed their head against the driver side mirror, ripped the mirror clean off and the guy laid out cold in the middle of the road.

Some of these people who jay walk or try to beat the Red Hand aren't very bright.

We get a lot of that shit out here. People walking through the roads like they own the bitch, as if they were in Tijuana or something.

When Jaywalkers cross like that and decide to take their sweet ass time, i make it a point to speed up and barely miss 'em.

Might have been that he saw them jay walking and told them to go to his car. Might have been that he was just going to give them a warning. Then they got lippy and stupid, so then it became a matter of respecting his authority. Then it escalated into what you saw on the video.

Either way, the punch is justified. Don't argue with cops...even Chris Rock knows that much...NSFW...

You really are a moron.

The road was evidently busy enough that they built a damn pedestrian overpass. The city spent thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars building a bridge expressly designed to keep people from just wandering out into this road. I would imagine they did so for a reason.

But once again - you have the market cornered on being oblivious, so I'm not sure why I waste my time.

Explain to me how jaywalking presents less of a hazard to motorists than speeding.

If everybody just jaywalked - went wandering out into the road wherever and whenever they wanted - you'd have traffic accidents by the dozen due to motorists that have this strange instinct that compels them not to kill another human being.

Jaywalking is no different than speeding. It's no different than running a red light or blowing a stop sign. If folks simply ignored shit like crosswalks, you'd have tons of problems that arise from it.

You're too damn simple to understand this, but it's absolutely true.

It's great how when police are in the media it always seems to be for their violence (justified or not); basically always a story about how they tased or punched someone. It always fails to mention how the person in quesiton was often acting like a dumbass etc. You never see the stories of police risking their lives to actually prevent crime and whatnot. However you feel about cops, it's kinda a shame the only time you see them is portrayed in a negative-violent light...but that's the media for ya

So what if it was jaywalking. You can get a ticket for it, so don't do it and definitely don't do it when their is a cop close by.

I'm sure Franklin and Rev. Jackson will be all over this soon, saying how this is racism blah blah blah.

You know, these girls should have respected the officer and none of this would have happened. But they have to be all bad ass and defiant. They are lucky he only punched one, but she shoved him first and that is assault on a officer.

I don't have a problem with what the officer did, but I am sure he will get the short end of the stick here, which pisses me off.

Jaywalking is commonly considered an infraction but in some jurisdictions it is a misdemeanor or requires a court appearance. The penalty is usually a fine. In some cities (e.g. New York City, Chicago, and Boston), although prohibited, "jaywalking" behavior has been so commonplace that police generally cite or detain jaywalkers only if their behavior is considered excessively dangerous or disruptive.

Maybe I'm just used to Illinois where EVERYONE jaywalks and NO ONE cares...

Sounds good. Now make sure you wash your hands afterwards and use plenty of napkins, okay? Good. You know you normally make a big mess when you eat, even though you try your super-best.

Maybe you sould get a cup, and not a cone. A cone is usually a struggle for you, I think.

It's JAYWALKING...

I bet less people die from jaywalking every year than people who die from being hit by an airplane on a beach while jogging and listening to an iPod early in the morning...

and if that statistic isn't accurate, I'm sure it's pretty close

We're talking about Jaywalking, man. Jaywalking!

The officer was (in my opinion) justified in hitting the girl. However, it was still incredibly stupid. He didn't have to hit her, and the consequences of hitting her (like a riot) could have certainly outweighed any benefits of compliance. I am pretty skeptical of the police, but even I don't think you can hold them to a standard of "the officer should have done the optimal thing."

This is a different video of the same incident. I think it adds some more context. I would like to see even more.

Here's what we now know about the two "kids" in the video - 19-year old Marilyn Ellen Levias and 17-year-old Angel Rosenthal:

Rosenthal was charged in November with second-degree robbery. According to prosecutors, she punched a 15-year-old boy in the face while she and a group of youths were on their way to a rave in South Seattle last Aug. 28. The boy told police that his cellphone and $20 were stolen in the incident. A 14-year-old boy told police that he was punched in the head and his hat was stolen.

Authorities say the case was dismissed when the boys refused to testify.

In April 2008, Rosenthal was charged with third-degree theft after she allegedly stole a minivan in Tukwila, prosecutors said. Kent police said she used a screwdriver to break the ignition and start the vehicle.

The charge was later amended to theft of a motor vehicle. Rosenthal was given a deferred disposition — charges would be dropped if she stayed out of trouble — because it was a first-time offense, said Ian Goodhew, deputy chief of staff for Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg.

Levias was charged in February 2009 with third-degree assault after she allegedly pushed a King County sheriff's deputy down.

According to charging documents, on Feb. 3, 2009, deputies were called to the Ruth Dykeman Children's Center, a Burien center for troubled girls, in response to a report that Levias was being abusive toward staff. When Levias was confronted by Deputy Amy Zarelli, she pushed the female deputy, causing her to fall, charging papers said.

Levias was given a deferred disposition because it was a first-time offense, Goodhew said.

So past record is now justification for police overreaction to jaywalking?

No, shoving a cop is justification for a cop punching the offender.

The past record gives us a hell of a lot of insight into how said offenders were behaving in advance of the recording. Wanna bet they didn't just apologize for breaking the freakin' law and walking across an incredibly busy stretch of road when there's a damn pedestrian overpass nearby?

To characterize this as an overreaction to jaywalking is to simply ignore the fact that the offenders in question fueled this entire situation by putting the officer in a position where he had little choice but to defend himself with violence.

But I'm sure these innocent little flowers did nothing to engender said angst.

I'm reading through this thread and jaywalking really has nothing to do with this. At all. A police officer was assaulted (even if by a very thin line) and reacted in the best way possible AFAIC.

But that said, Chiefless is right. Jaywalking is a problem at certain intersections, and for some reason people like to pretend that they're way more important than cars trying to drive on the roads, while they're jaywalking none the less. Good for the cop for writing the citation. Sometimes it's deserved, sometimes it's not. I'm assuming if he took the time to stop them for it, there's a reason.

So you are obviously just trolling. There is no such thing as a "shoving match" with a cop. There is only "resisting arrest" and "assault on a police officer." If that was a dude and he hit him, no one would have batted an eye. Despite this obvious sexism, some girls are perfectly capable of putting a cop in physical danger, especially when he is outnumbered. He showed tremendous restraint.

And pink shirt did not as him "WTF?" She full on shoved him. That is open aggression and cannot be allowed. What would it have taken for him to be allowed to subdue these girls? Drawing blood? Pulling weapons?

I'm not defending the cop, but I will say this about jaywalking - having worked in the Chicago Loop for the better part of 20 years, I can assure you that pedestrians ignoring traffic signals is responsible for about two-thirds of the gridlock and congestion. They have that "pedestrians have the right of way" mantra beat into their heads, and think they can do whatever they want. It's nearly impossible for more than two or three cars to make a turn before a stoplight changes, because pedestrians continue to walk when the "Don't Walk" sign flashes. Often they'll start crossing the street on yellow, and sometimes, well, fuck it, so what if it's red, I'm going.

One day - and I swear I'm not making this up - I saw some stupid bitch, who was pushing a baby in a stroller with one hand and holding on to a toddler with the other - start to cross Clark Street right in front of my building while the light was red. A taxi driver had to lock up his brakes to avoid hitting her. So what does this fucking idiot do? She stops in the middle of the street, lets go of the toddler's hand, and FLIPS OFF THE CAB DRIVER before continuing across the street while the light is still red. I shit you not - welcome to Chicago. I (and several other people) stood there staring gape-jawed at this woman, and she walked past us all without a care or a thought in her empty head.

Under not all, but certain circumstances, jaywalkers should be ticketed. And sometimes, they deserve a punch in the face.

Plus, jaywalk sounds like jayhawk. That can't be good.

Yeah....until someone dies because of jaywalking. Then he's not doing his job because he's not protecting them.

Yeah .....cuz then its the police's fault for someone being a dumbass crossing a street when there's traffic coming.

Even a 9 year old can look both ways and cross the street when there's nothing coming.

Jaywalking is one of those laws that is made because there are too many dumbasses in the world. Just like there's a law in STL that states "One can not walk his elephant downtown." (or something similar to that) Because you know what? At sometime or another, some dumb**** decided to walk an elephant in downtown STL and as you would probably assume, it caused a bunch of problems to the surrounding public.

IMO, the jaywalking law is on the same level of stupidity. If your crossing the street and there's traffic coming, don't cross the ****ing street unless you want to get hit by a ****ing car. If you don't want to get hit by a train, then don't walk on the ****ing tracks when the train is coming.

my friend Luke works in Inglewood (the worst district in Chicago) as a police officer and his favorite part of the job is...he never has to write an tickets for that bullshit...they go after the important things...like actual criminals.

Here...

he hates black people and he's a gung-ho cop...I'll ask him how he feels about this video on facebook and report back...

I predict he'll side with the cop but that's just because he hates black people more than anyone and he'll probably find it hilarious...Im sure your friend that is a cop evidently appreciates you putting his name in print linking him with racism.

How many Lukes do you think work in that district?

The officer was (in my opinion) justified in hitting the girl. However, it was still incredibly stupid. He didn't have to hit her, and the consequences of hitting her (like a riot) could have certainly outweighed any benefits of compliance. I am pretty skeptical of the police, but even I don't think you can hold them to a standard of "the officer should have done the optimal thing."

This is a different video of the same incident. I think it adds some more context. I would like to see even more.

This is a much better video of what happened.

While I disagree with hitting women for any reason, including this one, the cop has every right to defend himself in a situation that is escalating and he is being attacked by two people. She (girl in pink) absolutely had one hand going high and one going low, leading for the cop to think she may have been going for his gun.

The black guy trying to hold back the girl in pink should tell you everything you need to know about who was in the wrong.

The girl getting the original citation could have avoided this in whole if her parents had taught her to respect authority, trouble is that is rare with some people.

He was actually dealing with four girls at the beginning. I believe he was trying to keep it from escalating.

Now, these weren't 13/14/15 year old girls either. The two listed were 17 and 19. And, in the article, it doesn't refer to the other ages, but I assume it is around the same age. So, these were basically four adult women.

She clearly assaulted the police officer. I don't understand why anyone is upset that she got punched in the face.

The reason people are giving is because this incident began with the officer citing these kids for jaywalking, and according to some jaywalking should be ignored. Some people have latched on to the idea that she was punched for jaywalking, which is completely false.

Whether anyone likes it or not it or not Jaywalking is illegal in the same way that driving with a single, busted brake light is illegal. I don't think I should be cited for driving with a brake light out because it's really not that dangerous, but I accept that it is an infraction of the law no matter how trivial it seams to me. I would certainly not say or do anything to an officer that could be in any way be interpreted as a violent act.

Being cited by a police officer for an infraction that most people find trivial does not justify sociopathic, violent behavior toward authority. This woman (she is 19 and therefore a legal adult) has displayed a history of sociopathic behavior toward authority on more than one occasion. I just can't see how it can be excused because it began with the officer citing SOMEONE ELSE for jaywalking. This incident began with jaywalking but is about jaywalking no more. People, let go of the jaywalking part of the story and focus on what really happened. Violence against the police should not be tolerated under any circumstances where the police are legally enforcing the law.
