Party alliances aside, it's nice to see a politician held accountable. Especially when its from a high school student. The awkwardness and squirming are hilarious!
Please refrain from turning this into a D vs. R debate. Appreciate the simple humor in this video.
Teen upset at how video of Arizona senator is used
It was the kind of exchange that makes for an online viral sensation. Arizona state Sen. John Huppenthal, a Republican running for state superintendent of schools, was interviewed by a polite young man dressed in a suit and tie about recent cuts to the state education budget. Huppenthal told his interviewer that the reductions were "simply horrendous" — at which point his questioner, a 17-year-old high school student named Keith Wagner, reminded Huppenthal that he'd voted for legislation instituting $550 million worth of those horrendous cuts.
Things went downhill from there, with Wagner moving on to specific questions about the fate of vocational programs under the cuts — at which point the lawmaker abruptly asked Wagner to hold on, then appeared to leave the room.
The Arizona state Democratic Party leapt on the exchange, and the video indeed became a viral sensation. The liberal Huffington Post, to take just one example, noted that Huppenthal's website claims he is "one of Arizona's leading authorities on education issues." And the shortened YouTube video (as opposed to the full report that Wagner filed) punctuated the contrast between the flustered senator and his dogged teen questioner with the title "Huppenthal gets schooled" and an ominous closing caption: "Keith Wagner is still waiting for Huppenthal to return."
