A PAGAN psychic died when his car caught fire on a minor country road in what was described as "an unusual combination of events".

Disabled Richard Ellender, of Polruan, is thought to have died when the catalytic converter in the exhaust at the bottom of his car set fire to dry grass after his car went up a bank when he suffered a heart attack.

Cornwall Coroner Dr Emma Carlyon recorded an open verdict on Mr Ellender, 58, who was also a member of the Cornwall Viking Group.

The accident took place near Porthpean House, Lanteglos by Fowey, on June 30 last year.

In her verdict Dr Carlyon said Mr Ellender had suffered a cardiac event while driving normally along the road that night, and was unable to negotiate a bend. Because the heart problem had put him in a semi-conscious condition he did not attempt to open the car door.

There was no structural damage, but the most probable occurrence was that the contact with the catalytic converter and the grass and other debris had started a fire.

Mr Ellender had died through inhaling smoke and toxic gas combined with serious cardiac problems.

"He was in a semi-conscious state after losing control of the vehicle. He could not get out before the fire started."

Mr Ellender was driving a Renault Scenic provided to him under the Mobility Scheme when the accident happened in the late evening. His friend Nathaniel Wilkins, of Polruan Road, Liskeard, said in a statement that they were both interested in the re-enactment of medieval wars and travelled together to psychic fairs, sometimes in London.

Mr Wilkins said they both had psychic abilities and could create a psychic shield around a person.

Mr Ellender had visited him that day and was on his way home to Polruan when the accident occurred.

Pathologist Dr Deborah Cook said Mr Ellender, whose body was severely burned, was very obese with an enlarged heart. His arteries were narrowed, but he had not had a fresh heart attack, although his medical condition meant he could have died from heart disease at any time.
There was soot in his lungs which indicated that he had breathed in during the fire and was alive at the start of it.

"If it was not for his heart disease he should have been able to get out of his vehicle. It is possible he may not have been aware of the fire," she said.

Fowey GP Dr Alan Middleton said Mr Ellender suffered from epilepsy, diabetes and severe lower back pain, but they were all controlled by medication.

His weight and back pain would have slowed his movements if he had tried to get out of the car.

Helen Kelly, of Polruan, told how she saw the car on fire near the entrance to Porthpean House. The front of the vehicle was well alight and she could see flames.

Fire station manager at Polruan, Peter Ripley, said two firefighters with breathing apparatus found a man in the driver's seat, extensively burned and obviously dead.

Forensic vehicle examiner Geoffrey Chapman said there was no impact damage.

"The vehicle was on a raised bank and the bottom was in contact with grass and debris.

It could have ignited and entered the passenger area.

"In my opinion that is the most probable cause of the fire," said Mr Chapman.

There was a petrol can and items used in Pagan rituals in the boot of the car, but they were not the cause of the fire.

Well, he got his Viking funeral pyre.

I especially like how they still categorize him as "Disabled Richard Ellender"
