Sources tell ESPNNewYork.com that the Jets have checked on JaMarcus Russell, and they have cursory interest in the former Oakland Raiders bust who was cut recently after reportedly ballooning to 300 pounds.

The Jets are looking to acquire a veteran quarterback before training camp and, while league sources maintain that free agent Mark Brunell remains the odds-on favorite, Tannenbaum isn't ignoring other options. Russell, the No. 1 overall pick in 2007, is training in Arizona, trying to get in shape. Sources say the Arizona Cardinals or the Minnesota Vikings are the most likely landing spot for Russell, but the Jets have inquired by phone and received positive reports.

The Jets wouldn't be handcuffed by the NFL's "Final Eight" rules if they decide to sign Russell; that's because he was released by another team. To sign Brunell, an unrestricted free agent, the Jets would have to wait until late July, when the restrictions are lifted.

Somewhere on a Jets board..."What could it hurt, bring him in for the right price." He can help train Wonderboy for the Coney Island hot dog eating competition.

LT thinks Jamarcus should get a Jets tattoo.

I don't get it. Is this a joke thread?

You must surely mean that the Jets want Sanchez to mentor Russell, right?

Read it... the Jets want to bring in a veteran QB - a veteran like... Jamarcus Russell...

Why any NFL team would want to do that is completely beyond me.:shake:

As a Patriots fan, if the Jets sign Russell instead of Brunell, it would be the best, and funniest, news of my summer.

Yes, JaMarcus and his millions around all that New York pizza. He'll be starting at guard before the season is up.

To be fair. It would be a really dumb signing, but it doesn't undo all the positive moves they have made.

Maybe a mentor as in "See Mr. Sanchez, this is how NOT to do it"

Maybe they just really, really want to guard against any kind of quarterback controversy.

Bringing in a backup does not equal a mentorship sort of thing. Stupid thread title.

I've noticed this thread on the front page 3 different times and the title has made me LMAO all 3 times.

If put in the right situation and provided being cut is the wake up call to get this guy to pull his head out of his ass it might not be a bad signing. Oakland has been a train wreck in recent years and was the worst place for a mentally ill prepared kid to be put in the savior role. That and pockets full of money did the kid in. I think he was lazy and laid down.

However as has been said before the kid can throw a football through a car wash and not get it wet, sadly he misses the entire car wash 3 out of 4 times, if signed to a vet minimum contract and given the right support group...and an offensive line that allows his drop back syle he might workout. Yes it is a long shot but when shopping for 3rd or 4th string QBs his arm and possible up side are rare~

All those positive moves are keeping them from resigning their own.

Heheh, wtf?

Well... maybe they want to make sure Sanchez doesn't feel like his job is being threatened. Or... maybe they'd like him to put on some weight.

JR - OK, this is how I do it.
MS - Got it, don't do that.
