MOBILE, Ala. -- Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was arrested today for possession of a controlled substance, according to the Mobile County Sheriff's Office.

The substance was codeine syrup, spokeswoman Lori Myles said.

Myles said Russell was arrested at his home early this afternoon during an undercover investigation. He was booked into Mobile Metro Jail at 4:22 p.m. Russell was released minutes later after making $2,500 bail, according to online records.

Russell is scheduled to appear in court on July 20. A bond hearing is set for July 7.

Russell played high school football at Williamson High School in Mobile. He played quarterback for LSU from 2003 to 2006 and was the No. 1 draft pick for the Raiders in 2007.

Russell went 7-18 as a starting QB. The Raiders released Russell last May.

Wish I had a dollar for every time I got an e-mail or a tip about Russell and prescription cough syrup . . .

My answer was the same every time . . . can't touch the Russell-cough syrup issue until there's some kind of documentation . . .

Upon searching the vehicle police found an unknown powdery substance in a Ziploc bag and a snooter.

The unknown powdery substance was later confirmed to be the Colonel's secret blend of herbs and spices.

What a freakin' moron.

Addiction is a weird thing (and I'm assuming for the purposes of this point that Russell is an addict). He was a freakin' moron to try purple drank, and he was a freakin' moron to keep using it right up until the unknowable time when he became an addict and couldn't quit without help.

But as a using addict, Jamarcus has lost almost any ability to choose or to even care that he once had a choice or that he could someday regain the power to choose.

And aside from the fact that he was once a freakin' moron, that's just damned sad for Russell and everyone who cares for him.

Of course, Russell's money will buy a lot of good quality tissues.

I'd bet that upon hearing this news Dr. Drew's people immediately tried to get in touch with Russell's people concerning his possible appearance on Celebrity Rehab.

No, I didn't offer much. I don't know the man, and even if I did I suspect that I wouldn't know much about any addictions that he may or may not have. Addicts are often masters of hiding their problems until they overwhelm their lives.

Still, the signs are there, and he was busted in possession of an opiate. If he habitually uses that opiate, he's certainly at risk of becoming an addict.

Are you uncomfortable for some reason with discussions concerning whether he might be addicted?

I've taken sufficient care to show that I have reached no conclusions as to whether Russell is an addict, though I don't know why my opinion one way or the other should matter to you.

Although dextromethorphan is used recreationally, it has dissociative effects as opposed to narcotic. Dextromethorphan is a synthetic morphine analog that has been on the market in the United States since the 1960s. It is a cough suppressant in small doses, but in large doses it can result in a disassociative state, with hallucinations, similar to that produced by PCP or ketamine.[11]

Promethazine-codeine contains 10 mg of codeine and 6.25 mg of promethazine per 5 mL.[13]

Some users report that the large amount of sugar in drank causes them to experience weight gain, tooth decay, and other medical symptoms.[14]

Yes I consider what he did to the Raiders as stealing and if he did it to the Chiefs or whomever it would be the same thing...

That should probably totally end any shot whatsoever he has for a chance to play or hold a clipboard in the NFL.

From Sports Illustrated Website:

JaMarcus Russell is a big, big boy with an even bigger bank account and access to all kinds resources. So it's wrong to portray him as a victim.

But the Oakland Raiders sure didn't do him any favors, only aiding his path to becoming one of the biggest busts in NFL history.

Russell -- just 24 and already out of the league, released by the Raiders last spring -- was arrested this week in Mobile Alabama for illegal possession of codeine. The No. 1 overall draft pick in 2007 is a sad parable of excess, sloth and unfulfilled potential.

The rumors about Russell's drug use -- the slang term for a sweet mixture of codeine syrup, candy and soda is called "drank" -- were whispered nonstop throughout his three years with the Raiders. They were loud enough that the Raiders had to have heard them.

But if they did anything to help Russell with his problem, they've kept it to themselves.

But no one does denial like the Raiders. No one does messed up quarterback picks like the Raiders. Nineteen years ago, they selected Todd Marinovich whose career was an eerie blueprint for Russell's.

Would Russell have developed in a different way, with a more structured team?

Who knows? But with the Raiders it was almost guaranteed that he would succumb to his demons.

Al Davis makes the picks and he picked Russell -- which should have been a red flag considering Davis' poor track record with finding quarterbacks. But it seemed like a no-brainer at the time: Russell was big and strong and was coming off a terrific performance over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. The Raiders needed a quarterback -- and hadn't had one since Rich Gannon retired. So they made Russell the top pick in the draft.

And trouble immediately started. Russell held out through all of training camp and into the first week of the season, a clear sign he was getting bad advice and cared more about money than playing. New coach Lane Kiffin -- understandably -- didn't want to leapfrog a kid who had never played into the starting position. So Kiffin limited Russell's playing time -- the rookie got into just three games, starting only the season finale.

In 2008, Russell was named the starter and there were signs of potential. Kiffin ran an offense designed to protect Russell -- which made sense given Russell's limitations. But Russell was becoming a major source of friction in the festering battle between Kiffin and Davis.

Kiffin was lukewarm from the start on Russell. Davis blamed Kiffin for Russell's lack of development. When Davis fired Kiffin in the famous overhead projector moment, Davis said: "I realized that you did not want to draft JaMarcus Russell. He is a great player. Get over it."

But firing Kiffin only made things worse for Russell. Kiffin had hired a professional staff and tried to run the Raiders as a functional team, after the chaos of Art Shell's second go-round. He actually had structure, and though he may not have liked Russell, he had a plan for him.

With Kiffin's dismissal, the Raiders returned to their normal dysfunction. There was little authority. And the message that Davis had sent -- that JaMarcus Russell had his full support -- meant no one was going to suggest that Russell was too fat, too lazy, too potentially involved with the wrong crowd or a bad substance. Who was going to pick that battle with Davis? No one.

So at 22 & 23, with $40 million in the bank thanks to the Raiders, Russell did what he pleased. And what he pleased was not about getting in shape, working hard or attempting to become an NFL quarterback.

Russell has only himself to blame for his disastrous career. But being drafted by the Raiders sure didn't help.

So Russell is a lazy, fat, stupid guy that doesn't give a crap. But if he were drafted by some other team, he wudda been a dynamic, fit, intelligent guy with a determination to excel. I dunno....

A Mobile County Grand Jury has decided there is not enough evidence to indict NFL quarterback Jamarcus Russell.

Russell was arrested on July 5th for posession of codeine syrup without a valid prescription. Investigators say Russell was drinking an illegal mixture called "purple drank," which includes the narcotic mixed with either sprite, gatorade or another juice.

Russell pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Mobile County Grand Jury report was published this morning.

Russell played football at Williamson High School and LSU before he was drafted number one overall by Oakland in the 2007 NFL draft. He was released by the Oakland Raiders earlier this year.
