I'm getting ready to join you. The wife and I considered moving back in February but decided against it because she was pretty happy in her job. Now that she's been laid off, we've decided to make the plunge. I haven't been on here much lately because we're trying to move quickly, and things have fallen into place at an amazing pace.

Cost of living is less, wages are surprisingly close, and we may actually get to buy a house one of these days! So I guess instead of flying in for the bash, I'll be driving. We're going to start off in Springfield because I'm familiar with the area, and can be working pretty quickly. Hopefully the 4 of you down there will join me for a beer shortly after my arrival. :toast:

Yeah, it's actually a bit longer. I live north of Seattle a bit, and we're going south a bit and will drive through Wyoming and Nebraska instead of Montana and South Dakota. I fucking hate driving on 90 through South Dakota. It's brutal. Plus there's more truck stops along the way on the southern route. Awesome, even if you have any questions about renting in KC or anything else when the time comes, just let me know and I'll do my best to help. Interest rates are absolutely ridiculous right now, that's why I encourage anyone who can buy right now to go that route, even if you're buying less house than what you want. Fact is, most mortgage payments are less than rentals right now for the same place. I just helped someone yesterday who is going to get an FHA loan with a 3.15% fixed rate for 5 years. Unbelievable.

No, we decided to take the southern route after all. It's more populated, and I'm more comfortable with the route. I really would've loved to have gotten together, I actually thought of you about 5 years ago when I was driving through Billings. Unfortunately I didn't know how to get ahold of you that time.

I took 90 once, and it was plenty for me. As gorgeous as Montana is, South Dakota just isn't. :)

hell, all joking aside, what are you looking for and in what range? I'd be more than happy to point you in the right direction if you'd like.

We're going to be looking for a 3bd 2 ba or better house. I definitely want to be south of Springfield and preferably in Ozark, or Nixa. Battlefield or south Springfield would definitely work. I've already been told though to avoid the north side of town despite the much cheaper prices.

On a side note, the water pump went out on my Bravada today. I was thrilled. I KNEW something was not quite right with the cooling system on my rig, I just couldn't put my finger on it. Better it happens tonight than early next week. :)

Got the parts and going to be fixing it later tonight after a buddy gets off. I've dumped over a grand into these cars to get them ready. Now that this happened, I'm confident we'll make it with no problems.

My wife was fretting over it though, and was whining as we were driving from my steaming truck in a parking lot to the parts store across the street. I looked at her and told her this was a best case scenario, but she was nervous. She looks up and starts laughing, and points to the car in front of us. Missouri plates. Perfect timing. :)

yeah, definitely avoid north springfield. well, it all depends. there are some nice areas in north springfield (I went to middle school in north springfield before moving to just outside of ozark at 15 years old), but some not-so-nice areas. you don't have kids, so it shouldn't be THAT big an issue if you find a nicer area in north springfield.

I just completely contradicted myself. I guess, the take-home is this: don't sell north springfield short--there are definitely some undesirable elements in some parts, but also some very quiet mature-type neighborhoods in north spfd.

I live in south springfield, though, and I'll put it this way: we passed up a chance at a decent apartment not too far from OTC (chestnut and national) because it gave my wife a bad feeling. I grew up about a mile away or so as the crow flies, but if your wife is anywhere approaching 'sheltered,' follow your instincts.

This trip has been a fucking nightmare so far. It's really no surprise, considering how incredibly lucky I've been in the past driving across country. I lost 4th gear in my truck about 150 miles into the trip. Finally stopped in Baker City to get a transmission service done hoping that would fix it. Nope. But on my way out of town my air conditioning unit blew up, so that kicked ass. Driving through Idaho at 8pm in 92 degree heat. Good fuckin' times.

Today was much better. We covered almost 800 miles and are currently in Big Springs, NE. I'm thinking about splitting the last 12 hours up and stopping in either Saint Joseph, or KC for the night tomorrow. Still pondering it.

Anyways, I'm fucking determined. We'll get there one way or the other. Big thanks to Bugeater for offering us a place to crash for a night. Unfortunately we weren't able to take him up on it.

So what exactly happened with it, did you just lose overdrive? I bet that did wonders for your gas mileage.

Pretty much. I got to the point where we could stop and let it cool down and I'd get overdrive back for half an hour or so. Then, I figured out that if I jammed it up to about 4 grand in 3rd gear I could let off the gas and pop it back into 4th, but that only worked sometimes.

Yeah, the gas mileage was a bitch. I was expecting to spend about 3 bills on gas for the Bravada, and ended up spending over 4.

I'm very happy to report that we found a nice, big, house right where we wanted to live in Nixa. 3 bedroom, 2 bath, and over 1600 square feet with a fenced back yard, and it's on 10 acres shared with one other home a few acres away. The best part is, the rent is less than we paid for our 1 bedroom apartment up in the Seattle area.

Welcome home, brah.

Sweet. Well wishes for you Floppy Nuts. Funny you chose to move to Missouri right when I moved out.
