I have no fucking clue either, basically maier got in a rundown betancourt got to 3b and maier ran back to 1st so they tagged him and betancourt hoping to get both out, but mitch was the only one called out. Supposedly if mitch tags 3rd and walks off the base he owned that base and hes out and so is betancourt since mitch owns the base.

No, if Mitch was tagged while on the bag he owns the bag. He was not on the bag when he got tagged. So he is out.

Well for both to be out they would have had to wait to tag Maier after he left the bag and had to tag Betemit first while Maier was on the bag. That didn't happen. They never should have tagged Maier first. They screwed themselves there.

overall fairly good day in the minors, other than another crap start from Crow

Moose Tacos: 3/5
Hosmer: 3/5, solo homer
Aaron Crow: 6 1/3, 6 earned runs, 2 walks, 4 K, loss
Colon: 0/4 with a K but he somehow scored two runs. I'm guessing he reached on both errors from the other team or something
Wil Myers: 4/4 with 2 doubles. Awesome.

You know, I'm probably half way retarded, but I'm pretty sure that if you gave me an assistant to help me understand the money side of things and let me be the guy who does trades and free agent acquisitions I could have done a better job. Relegate Dayton to the main scout of young talent, but don't let him have any input on trades, call ups, every day decisions, free agents.

I can go back and find every single one of my posts if I need to where I indicated that acquiring Betancourt was terrible, that signing Kendall to more money than Buck would have commanded, etc etc etc. I'm not the only one, I'm preaching to the choir I know.

I honestly don't think most people here (even the draftubators) could make better decisions than the GM's in the NFL despite what they think, but the kind of shit the Royals pull is ridiculous. Point is, you can be a casual Royals fan and still figure out that 90% of the trades and acquisitions have been shit.

He's going to get every chance in the world, we already have too many 1B/DH guys. I don't think anyone really knows yet, but we dont have much after him.

He could play the OF, and we definitely need OFs. But his max value is at C, so yeah, he should get every opportunity there. Mike Piazza was a terrible defensive C and had a Hall of Fame career there.

I'll take him at catcher even if he's barely adequate, as long as the defense isn't an utter embarassment. People freak out a little too much about catcher defense.

Suppose a catcher allows like 6 or 7 extra passed balls and 7 more stolen bases in a year, but he can hit 10 more home runs than the catcher you would have gotten instead? So what? Most of those guys would have either scored anyway or will still be stranded 90 feet closer to home.

Sacrificing defense is less acceptable for shortstop since a bad SS can give away a hell of a lot of runs in a year, but "bad" catchers really dont impact the W/L record via defense nearly as much as people think.

DeezNutz
08-04-2010, 09:25 AM
The only reasons why I'd want Myers moved from C would be if the physical demands of the position were wearing down his body type or negatively affecting his bat.

If I am a GM I want a good defensive catcher handling the pitching staff. That is where most of the money on the roster is tied up.

True, that should be a consideration too. When he's in AA-AAA or so, and it looks like he could clearly go either way (C or OF, make a choice) then I would want a very thorough exam from several sports physicians to answer the question: are his knees more prone to break down than most guys? If not, great, but if there's some question you gotta weigh the risk/reward of a good-hitting catcher vs one of your best hitters landing on the DL before you get all the value out of him.

alnorth

I very, very strongly disagree with the whole concept of a catcher having this ability to "handle the pitching staff" and make them perform better. There is absolutely no statistical proof that catchers that people in the game claim had this mystical voodoo-like ability actually show it in the results, and a lot of people have looked.

A lot of people will stubbornly hang on to this theory until they die out and are replaced with people who dont believe in this nonsense. I view this theory of a catcher being able to "handle pitchers" the same way I view the theory of Bigfoot or the Tooth Fairy.

If I had a front-line ace (like Greinke and Olivo) who demanded "his" catcher and I would not have otherwise gotten or started that catcher, I would probably go along with it, but thats only because of a psychological issue on his part, and he's earned the right to have his own superstitions every 5th day, not because I believed in it.

alnorth
08-04-2010, 09:50 AM
Incidentally, before we get it in our heads that Wil sucks behind the plate, I'm not ready to write him off as a below-average catcher yet. He had a rough first couple years in rookie ball and the low minors, but he seems to have improved a bit on the passed balls in high-A this year. (used to be one PB every 3 games, now he's had just 2 in 15 starts). He throws out about 33% of base-stealers, which isn't great, but right about the break-even point where it makes sense to steal vs not steal. If he can improve on that at all, then he's at least closer to average.

We supposedly have coaches in the low and mid-minors for a reason, I'd give them a chance to do their job. If the AA guys tell me "hey, we did our best, but he is what he is: a below-average catcher with a good bat, and we can't improve his defense", then we can look into it more.
