Cubs Manager Lou Piniella retires after game

Chicago Cubs Manager Lou Piniella bumped up his retirement plans by six weeks and stepped down after a 16-5 loss Sunday to the Atlanta Braves.

Piniella previously announced that he would retire from managing after the 2010 season, but he accelerated his departure so he could spend more time with his ill mother in Tampa, Fla. Piniella recently took a leave from the Cubs to tend to his 90-year-old mother, and he said her health has had some "complications."

Mike Quade, the Cubs' third base coach, will become the interim manager. He has no major league managerial experience.

Piniella, 66, managed five teams in 23 seasons, compiling a record of 1,835-1,713. He led the Cincinnati Reds to the World Series title in 1990.

It's sort of odd that they'd go with Quade as interim manager when Alan Trammel is their bench coach. Hard to imagine that Trammel won't be offended by that.

He loafed as a Royals rookie, he was an a-hole as a Yankee and a total Douche as a manager.

Besides that, I guess he was OK.

Happy Retirement!

They were talking about him being a HOF manager. Something like 125 games over .500 as a manager, took the Reds to a WS championship, and is the only manager in the last 100 years to take the Cubs to the post season two years in a row.

I think his rants were pretty histerical.

Watch him be managing again in 3 years.

One way I can see is that if management want to give Trammel, Sandberg, and other canadates a chance, they probably want to make sure it was done fairly, I guess. Or perhaps Trammel is not interested in being a manager after experiencing a abortion of a season that he had in Detroit.

I keep hearing that it's going to be Sandberg next year. Fan favorite, organization guy, already managing at AAA.

I wonder how long it will take to ruin him?

I am not a Cub fan, but man if Showalter hadn't gotten himself stuck in a nightmare division in the AL, he would have been a good guy for a turnaround. Large market, have some money to spend, etc. I would rather rebuild somewhere there is a chance to win the damn division.
