I figured instead of posting a shit load of threads here, I can make this one thread and just bump it any time I want to talk about something.

First up, Ryan Mathews.

The guy has looked great in the preseason so far. I've forgot what its like to have a RB who can get more than 3 yards on a run almost every time.

There's no doubt about that. He reminds me of Matt Forte with a little more burst.

Buck

Yeah, he is mostly a North-South runner, and he has a bit of speed after his initial burst. He hasn't broken one yet, but I want to see if he can go all the way when he does.

So far he has 21 carries for 103 yards.

Yes! However, he has a history of injuries throughout his career. He looks like a deer, (all arms and legs), and every time he gets tackled I cringe.
He should pay off for aboot 6 catches, 70/80 yds and 1/2 a TD per game while he lasts. Legedu Naanee might be a nice late round pick up to.

There's no way the cHargers get a 1st for Jackson. First of all, Marshall only garnered 2 2nds. Add to that, his salary demands are astronomical.
For any team to be foolish enough to mortgage their future and their current financial situation on a guy who's had 1 maybe 2 good seasons and has a 4 game suspension looming over his head is preposterous.
It's almost like a team, drafting high in the 2nd round, trading picks with the cHargers to acquire their 3rd string QB who never played a down in the NFL.

I guess it could happen…

Yea and don't pay the LT either, that team paid Rivers and is basically telling everyone else to fuck off..

They better hit homeruns in the next several drafts or their talent level is going to rapidly decline.

Being cheap with your best players is no way to build a team.

Pass that shit around.
The cHargers have habitually given extensions to young players to keep them on board, (Castillo, Phillips, etc...). The uncertainty surrounding the CBA is what's holding them back.
I find it interesting how the cHargers have allowed Jackson to seek a trade while they've told McNeill to sit still.

Are you suggesting Marty fucked AJ's wife?
Marty's firing was based on many professional reasons that weren't necessarily handled professionally overall.
-Marty failed in the playoffs with a 14-2 team.
-Marty let both Co-coordinators from that team walk.
-Marty tried to hire his brother as the D Co-coordinator.
-Marty wanted more say in personnel decisions
(A.J inherited Marty as his coach and probably wasn’t in a position to fire him on the spot. The owner stepped in and fired Marty, with good reason).

Suck Marty's wiener if you like him that much.

Looks like it Redskins or bust for the Chargers and Jackson

http://www.thenflforum.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=160343

Speaking on 710 ESPN this afternoon, John Clayton reported that Vincent Jackson and his agent were asking for a five-year $50 million deal with $30 million guaranteed, which was too much for Seattle.

There's a lot of moving parts to this deal. First, Seattle is the only team that the Chargers have granted access for Jackson's agent to talk to. This implies that there's some players on Seattle's squad that they're interested in. The Chargers reportedly want a 2nd round pick back, which the Hawks are happy to hand over. The 'Hawks, however, do not want to spend that kind of loot, so it's back to the drawing board for the Bolts. Time is off the essence here because Jackson's suspension increases September 4th:

If Jackson reports to a club before the Sept. 4 roster-reductions then he will only face a three-game suspension. If he doesn't then he's looking at a six-game suspension even if he is traded, reports the NFL Network.

Is Kaeding related to Elliot. I thought Kaeding was supposed to be a decent kicker. If he chokes every time they make the playoffs he's a huge liability. Having him coupled with Norv Turner and AJ Smith is going to provide years of mediocrity at least until Rivers demands a trade and then you guys can pick up a decent QB with the #1 overall like the Raiders did and hope he's not the next Ryan Leaf.

I wouldn't take him in an FF draft. It'll take the perfect storm to trade for him.
IMO AJ'd rather let him sit all year than accept anything lower than a second.
I wonder if the Chargers have a method of suspending him all season to keep his rights for 2011. The Comish had helped out with the DUI suspension, (although, I'm not sure if it works that way).

BUT, I really don't see what 's so special about Mathews. If the line opens him a hole he runs through it pretty good but he DOES NOT have any moves even close to LT. He reminded me a lot of LJ just running into the back of the pile . I feel a lot better about them moving up to take him now.

Marcus McNeill signs one-year tender, reports to Chargers

Posted by Michael David Smith on September 25, 2010 1:40 PM ET

The Chargers have their left tackle back.

Marcus McNeill, the restricted free agent who had until now declined to sign his one-year tender offer, has now signed his tender.

PFT has learned that McNeill signed the one-year tender only, and has not signed a long-term deal.

Prior to this season, McNeill had started every game but two in his NFL career. He'll be eligible to return to the lineup after the Chargers' next three games.

Very bittersweet day for me. I went to the Chargers game while at the same time the Padres lost and missed out on the playoffs by 1 game, despite winning 90 games this season.

The Chargers looked sharp and if they can avoid big special team returns, I think they can be really good.

As of right now the Chargers have the #1 ranked Offense and the #1 ranked Defense in the NFL. http://www.nfl.com/stats/team

I think this has a little do with giving up 4 return TDs so far this year. Since you give up a return TD, your defense sees less plays on the field and in turn gives up less yards, while your offense gets right back on the field and has a chance for more yards.

Either way I'll take it.

The defense had 9 sacks, which I thought was amazing, until I saw the Giants get 9 in one half....Shaun Phillips had 4 sacks and a 31 yard interception return for a TD.

Ryan Mathews has a sprained ankle, yet he still had 8 carries for 55 yards and his first career TD and Mike Tolbert became the first Charger to rush for at least 100 yards since 2008.

Antonio Gates is something else. He caught his 500th career pass today. He had something around 7 catches for 135 yards and 2 TDs. He is the fastest TE to ever reach the amount of yards and TDs he has by the number of games he has played, and is right behind TG and Sharpe on Receptions. He really has a chance to be one of the greatest of all time if he stays healthy.

Anyways after I got home from the game, I was really bumming out because of the Padres choking away a playoff birth, so I took a nap and now I'm watching the most boring game I've ever seen.

I think it also has a little to do with the fact that they've played Matt Cassel, David Garrard, Matt Hasselbeck, and Derek Anderson.

The funny thing is that the Chargers 2 home games which I've been to were almost identical in that we beat the shit out of the other team, and both times the Starting QBs were benched in the 3rd qtr (Garrard, Anderson). Both road games have been similar in that they were bad weather games, in really loud stadiums where we gave up Return TDs and lost by a TD and couldn't put the ball in the endzone to tie it up at the end of the game.

As fans we tend to overeact to the most recent performance. If our team wins big, we tend to ignore obvious holes.

I think that the Chiefs, Broncos or Chargers could each win the division.

The Chiefs are sitting the best right now because the Chargers will have the harder schedule overall. They have to play the Steelers and Pats. The Chiefs have to play the Bills and already played Cleveland.

The rest of the schedule is pretty much the same. The Chiefs already have two less losses and have beat the Chargers once.

I think the Chiefs have a much better coaching staff than the Chargers. I think the Chargers have more talent..... but that doesn't always equal wins.

Saw clips of the Chargers game.
I am impressed with Tolbert and Matthews.

Tolbert is unbelievable. He just runs right over people. It is ridiculous to just watch him truck LB, DB's and safeties. He is like 5'8", 255 pounds or something?

Matthews has been impressive. Very quick, reminiscent of the old LT. I think he has more power though. Nice TD run he had and diving at the end.

THats a good 1-2 punch.

Rivers to Gates is just ridiculous.

Postseason likely would be Gates' next game

By Kevin Acee

Thursday, December 16, 2010 at 10:21 p.m.

Antonio Gates will play as soon as he can but it seems increasingly likely that won’t be until the playoffs – if the Chargers make the postseason.

“I think that’s kind of the goal,” Gates said late Thursday night.

People with knowledge of the team's plan with Gates said the perennial Pro Bowler has as long as he needs to get healthy. Now that he has torn the plantar fascia, rest is all that will make his right foot better.

Gates missed a second straight game Thursday due to the ongoing pain in his right foot and inability to cut and plant.

After he played for two weeks through an ankle sprain and turf toe in his left foot and a partially torn plantar fascia in the right foot, Gates has missed four of the past six games.

Still the Chargers’ leading receiver with 50 receptions for 782 yards and 10 touchdowns and also the leading vote-getter by far among AFC tight ends, Gates has not practiced since playing Dec. 5 against Oakland. He had six receptions for 73 yards and a touchdown that day but was disappointed by the plays he couldn’t make due to being unable to move as usual. He also indicated playing in that game set him back physically.

Gates has had his foot checked by outside specialists and is comfortable he is not making it worse by playing. While he has acknowledged he has considered not playing again until next season, he said last week there is "no use in turning back now."

He seemed pessimistic on Thursday that even the extra days before the Chargers’ next game – Dec. 26 at Cincinnati – would allow him enough rest to play. But he has surprised even himself by playing in the past.

“I don’t ever rule myself out,” said Gates, who prior to succumbing to this most recent injury had played in 96 straight games. “… It’s just tough.”

Chargers' Gates likely to miss final two games, rest for playoffs

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81d2026c/article/chargers-gates-likely-to-miss-final-two-games-rest-for-playoffs

SAN DIEGO -- Six-time Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates likely will sit out the final two regular-season games to rest his injured right foot in case the Chargers make the playoffs.

"I do want to get healthy," Gates said Wednesday. "That's what's best for this team."

Gates missed the previous two games and four of the last six with a painful tear in his right plantar fascia. Gates said the team's other tight ends, Randy McMichael and Kris Wilson, are more than capable of doing the job.

"Based on the history of the injury, there's no speedy recovery," Gates said. "Time is key. Not only do I need time, but I need rest."

In order to win their fifth consecutive AFC West title, the Chargers (8-6) need to win their final two games, at Cincinnati on Sunday and at Denver on Jan. 2, and have the Kansas City Chiefs lose once.

Gates said he'll have had four weeks of rest if the Chargers do make the playoffs.
