Change of plan: Bears sign QB Todd Collins

Someone had a change of heart.
Todd Collins(notes) told the Chicago Bears no thanks last week when the team tried to lure the 38-year-old quarterback to sign a one-year contract. He wanted at least a small guarantee from the club so he wouldn’t be showing up to be a camp arm for three weeks before final cuts.
This morning, the Bears announced that Collins signed a one-year contract to become the fifth quarterback on the roster. Whether or not Collins received the $150,000 he was seeking in the form of a signing bonus is not yet known.
The Bears began scrambling for a quarterback when backup Caleb Hanie(notes) suffered a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder in the preseason opener at San Diego. The team went through many options, getting turned down by retired options Trent Green(notes) and Damon Huard(notes), as well as Josh McCown(notes) and Collins. Ultimately, Matt Gutierrez(notes) was signed and his time could be limited now with Collins on board.
The belief is that Hanie will be healthy near the start of the regular season. Rookie sixth-round draft pick Dan LeFevour(notes) has not performed well and figures to be a longshot to survive final cuts. The Bears would like to go with only two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster like they did last season. Of course, if Hanie isn’t ready emergency duty in Week 1, perhaps that plan will change.
Collins has not played for offensive coordinator Mike Martz previously, but he has experience in the same system from his days as a backup with the Kansas City Chiefs.
