Here is the US govt. site with advice for foreign travel. A couple of samples:

*Women considering relocating to Saudi Arabia should be keenly aware that women and children residing in Saudi Arabia as members of a Saudi household (including adult American-citizen women married to Saudi men, adult American-citizen women who are the unmarried daughters of Saudi fathers, and American-citizen boys under the age of 21 who are the sons of Saudi fathers) require the permission of the Saudi male head of their household to leave the country. Married women require their husband's permission to depart the country, while unmarried women and children require the permission of their father or male guardian. Mothers are not able to obtain permission for the departure of minor children without the father's agreement.

*it is important to note that there remains an ongoing security threat due to the continued presence of terrorist groups, some affiliated with al Qaida, who may target Western interests, housing compounds, hotels, shopping areas and other facilities where Westerners congregate. These terrorist groups may employ a wide variety of tactics and also may target Saudi Government facilities and economic/commercial targets within the Kingdom.

*Penalties for the import, manufacture, possession, and consumption of alcohol or illegal drugs in Saudi Arabia are severe. Convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences, heavy fines, public floggings, and/or deportation. The penalty for drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia is death. Saudi officials make no exceptions. Customs inspections at ports of entry are thorough. The U.S. Embassy and Consulates General have no standing in Saudi courts to obtain leniency for an American convicted of alcohol or drug offenses.

*Homosexual activity is considered to be a criminal offense and those convicted may be sentenced to lashing, prison, or death.

My my doesn't it sound like a wonderful place to go. It is interesting that having worked in a liquor store, I may have committed what would be a capitol offense had I been in their country.

You'd have to have some kind of mental malfunction if you were considering travelling to the Middle East.

require the permission of the Saudi male head of their household to leave the country. Married women require their husband's permission to depart the country, while unmarried women and children require the permission of their father or male guardian.

There's a perfectly logical reason for this. If they didn't have these rules, every woman would leave.

Funny thing is, Saudi Arabia is one of the good guys as far as Americans travelling in the Middle East. Check the foreign travel advisorys from other ME countries.

Both, Its just a sketchy place if you will, when you leave the tourist traps and see the "real" city you start to feel the need to always look over your shoulder. I loved Tel Aviv and believe it or not the few days I had in Beirut were amazing, cant wait to go back.

When I was there in '02, women weren't allowed to leave the house without a male family member as escort. Sounds like they've eased up a bit. :D

In case you're keeping score, the Republicans are both Islamaphobes and aspire to be just like the Islamists depending on what suits the liberal argument of the moment.

Now, off to DC we go......

Were heading to rawlpindi Pakistan in october to visit out development office. Little nervous but pretty excited at the same time. Work with these people everyday via skype. Yet. Actually going to the pm is very unsettling. Even though we will be in the most secure places.
