Austin Rivers recruiting: Winter Park's Austin Rivers chops Gators off his final four

By Buddy Collings, Orlando Sentinel

As a 15-year-old coming out of his freshman year, Austin Rivers orally committed to Billy Donovan and Florida, saying nothing could be better than playing college basketball two hours from home for a program coming off two NCAA titles.

But much has changed in 26 months, with Rivers rising to No. 1 on national prospect charts and UF slipping to fourth in the SEC East last season. Rivers, a 6-foot-4 senior scoring machine for Class 6A state champ Winter Park, said he has chopped the Gators out of his final four and is down to Duke, North Carolina and Kansas.

Rivers' sister, Callie, is a UF senior volleyball standout, and Austin praised UF as "probably the best all-around college sports school, period." But he wants a hoops hotbed.

"The three schools on my list are the most prime time you can get," Rivers said. "Basketball is a huge tradition, and they're on ESPN all the time."

Duke coaches are scheduled to dine at the Rivers household Tuesday night, following home visits last week by UNC and Kansas.

Rivers, the son of Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers, said he will decide after taking official visits to UNC (Oct. 8), Duke (Oct. 15) and Kansas (Oct. 22).

Until someone beats them you have to favor Kansas.

Big 12 Champion:

2005 Kansas 12-4

2006 Kansas 13-3

2007 Kansas 14-2

2008 Kansas 13-3

2009 Kansas 14-2

2010 Kansas 15-1

It's pretty clear to see why people hate KU when you're in a situation like that. Sometimes they are so unstoppable people have a hard time getting their head around it.

I'm not going to lie, that 2008 National Championship night was probably the greatest night of my life. It was better than losing my virginity, it was a better feeling than I have ever experienced, ever. Personal accomplishments feel great, but they're not shared with thousands of other people. That night was just so freaking ridiculously magical. The energy and the pure jubilation was PALPABLE on Mass street and everywhere else. The happiness was just overflowing from EVERYONE on the insanely crowded streets, it was like nothing else I have ever experienced.

I don't think it's possible to explain it. You have to experience it for yourself. All that emotional investment finally paid off for once in my life. And I have to say, it was well worth all the previous heartbreaks and depression-laden days. That shit paid off in SPADES.

The UNC game was pretty awesome too. Felt great.

The Champ game was more of instant relief because the shot didn't win it, only extended the game. You knew right from the tip of OT that KU was going to win.

The UNC game was more fun for me personally in the situation I was in and it built such a feeling of confidence for the next game that I was a bit more into I have to say.

I love looking forward to the next game no matter what the situation.

That's why bowl wins for KU are great but kind of a bummer because you know that's the end of it.

One of my best friends just had a son a couple of months ago and I asked him if it was the greatest feeling in the world? We agreed after the KU win that was going to be the only greater feeling than the NC night. He confirmed our theory. Since I don't have kids yet, that win is still the best feeling I have ever experienced, however sad that might seem to the vast majority of people.

personally, the win over UNC was bigger and better than the championship win. but that's just a reflection of my pure unbridled hatred for that school, and a week of facing the possibility that ole huckleberry hound would knock us out of the F4.

to have both a tournament win over UNC and a championship happen the same year makes it even that much more special.

Don't get me wrong, it was an Awesome evening, a huge celebration and party in the streets, and the first one was definitely better than the others. I'd have to think more to identify the single greatest night but I've had a lot of times that I can look back on with greater stories and fonder memories. I guess I'm lucky.

KU Orange Bowl, KU win over UNC & then the National Championship win were great. Had a blast for each game. But they don't even remotely compare to the birth of any of my 4 kids, or the day my daughter got out of the NICU, or the day my mom was released from the hospital. Not even close.

I think our respective fandoms are just on different levels. Give me an example of something better than UF winning it all, it doesn't have to be the best ever. I'm pretty sure what you say is not going to make me go "oooh, yeah, I wish I could experience that" because I most likely have.

I expect KU to win another Big12 title.

I don't really expect them to make it past sweet 16 though. They may not even get there.

But, 2011-12 season if Marcus Morris stays and doesn't leave for the NBA early, KU should make another Final 4 run IMO.

But this upcoming season, I predict anywhere from 23-27 wins, 5-9 losses.

Like I said, personal accomplishments are great and they feel amazing. The purest of pure jubilation still wasn't there for me like it was on that April night in 2008. Can't really identify with Bar Mitzvah, though.

Bar Mitzvah was fucking hard. Had to memorize how to read tons of hebrew shit, and not only read it, but "chant" it correctly.

Trust me, It will be KU, If I'm wrong. I'll buy a Matt Cassel Jersey.

You might started looking for a good deal on your jersey.....

From Austin Rivers Diary:

What’s up world! It’s been a while, but I’ve been busy with all of these coaches coming in for in-home visits. It wasn’t tiring at all talking to the coaches. I loved it. I mean, at the end of the day I’ve got three of the greatest coaches in the game coming to my house and having dinner with me! They’re just talking to me about how much they want me to come and play for them and that’s definitely cool.

The tiring part is when I had to do all of the interviews. I know that comes with the territory, but I’m just glad I can relax. I’m chillin’ now.

First, UNC came in. I met Coach (Roy) Williams at the front door. I think he came in some sort of nice Cadillac car. The meeting was really cool! We fed them ribs and fried chicken, potatoes, green beans and lemon cake. My mom can REALLY cook! Hmm … I’m trying to think of who ate the most … To be honest, they all ate their plate. I think they liked it because they ate everything. Coach Williams really laid out where he saw me fitting into his system and they did their presentation. I got to see DVDs and they said that they could see me coming in and running the show. Obviously, I’m gonna have to work for it, but they said that I’m a player that can come in and make a big impact right away. I liked it. Coach Williams is a really cool guy. When they left they just said that they’d see me in a few weeks on my visit and that was it.

Kansas came next. This was my first time meeting Coach (Danny) Manning and Coach (Bill) Self. We switched it up for dinner. My mom made lasagna. That’s my favorite and everybody really liked it. Their presentation was similar to UNC’s. Honestly, it was really chill and relaxed. We talked about the NBA and the lockout and who is the best player they’ve ever seen and all of that stuff. Then at the end of the conversation, Coach Self talked about how he saw me fitting into his system. It was similar to UNC. He said that he sees me as an immediate impact player. It was a really good visit! I really enjoyed getting a chance to meet them.

With both UNC and Kansas it was a little different than Duke because I’m getting to know those schools. I already know Duke really well. I really enjoyed forming a relationship with Coach Williams and Coach Self.

When Duke came, it was kinda like old friends coming to the house. Duke had a driver outside. I think they were in a Lincoln. It was Coach K and Coach (Chris) Collins. We served them the same kind of food that we served UNC. It was sooo good we had it again! They loved it! And Coach K had like seven glasses of lemonade, so that was pretty funny. Then Coach K and Coach Collins laid out their vision for me. They didn’t compare me to any former players, but they did talk about the freedom that Jay Williams had when he was there. They felt like I was the kind of player that could have that type of freedom in their system. They said they trusted me to play off of my instincts. I really liked that!

You know what was cool: All of the coaches that came in were sporting championship rings. Coach K even had his USA ring on and that was real nice! Those national title rings were REALLY nice, though. They were beautiful. I’ve gotta get one!

I ended up texting my boy Kyrie Irving (Duke), but we didn’t even talk about the visit. We were talking about Mike Posner. Kyrie’s my boy, so we talk all the time. I also talk to players from UNC. Like I know P.J. Hairston, Kendall Marshall and Reggie Bullock, and I know Harrison Barnes a little too. I don’t have anyone at Kansas that I really talk to like that.
Now the next step is the visits. I’m really looking for the same thing at every school. I just want to see how they roll! I want to see what it’s like to go there when school is in session. I want a glimpse of the life.
Like I said, I’m still building a relationship with UNC and Kansas so that will all be new, but I think even at Duke it will be kind of new. I’ve only been there when the students weren’t there and now I’m coming for “Countdown to Craziness” and I KNOW that’s gonna be just crazy with them coming off the title and everything. So they’re all gonna be the same and I’m really looking forward to it! I’m definitely gonna take all three visits for sure.

The other thing I wanted to mention was that, obviously, I recently dropped Florida off of my list. That was hard to do. I have so much respect for Coach (Billy) Donovan and that whole staff. They were the first school that I fell in love with, and the only school that I committed to. I just felt like it wasn’t right for me, but they have a great program over there. And a lot of players will succeed there. I just felt like for my career it was best that I go elsewhere.

Well, that’s all for now everybody. Check back, though, because I’m gonna do a diary after each of my official visits! I appreciate you guys reading. Until next time!

That doesn't sound like an endorsement for anybody as of yet. Sounds like he already has a good relationship with Duke. But I wouldn't say that he has decided on Duke. He wants to visit UNC and KU. Good stuff.

btw - on 810 they just said that Selby has been ok'd to be on scholarship and to practice but hadn't cleared Selby to play games.

i mean if you can practice with the team and be on scholarship then it's only a matter of when, not if, he is cleared to played imo.

The Tennessee issue is only an issue for Bruce Pearl and his respective school. It doesn't apply to KU or Selby in any way, shape or form. It's been about Frazier from the start, bro.

Austin Rivers commits to Duke

Shooting guard Austin Rivers (http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=54160), the No. 1-ranked player in the recruiting class of 2011, has committed to Duke, according to his high school coach.

Rivers, who at one time was committed to Florida, is a highly sought-after playmaker from Winter Park, Fla. He revealed his college plans Thursday, Winter Park coach David Bailey said.

Rivers broke the news to Kansas coach Bill Self and North Carolina's Roy Williams, the coaches of two of Rivers' top three choices, on Thursday morning. Rivers canceled the remainder of his campus visits, including one he was planning to take to North Carolina this weekend.

"He picked Duke because of [Mike Krzyzewski] and his staff," Bailey said. "There is a ton of tradition at Duke, and it was the best place for him from a basketball and academic standpoint."

Rivers' father, Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers, said Thursday that his son's commitment has not been finalized.

"He's leaning [toward Duke] and most likely he'll commit in the next couple days," Rivers said. "But it's not official, yet. I'll wait and let him do it."

The 6-foot-4, 189-pound Rivers could have an immediate impact once he gets to Cameron in Duke's up-tempo, fast-breaking style of play. He is a prolific scorer, has range out to 28 feet and an excellent mid-range game. He uses the jab-step as well as seasoned pros, can finish through contact when attacking the basket and has the best NBA-level floater over bigs of any player in the high school or college ranks.

When teams adjust to try to stop Rivers, he is able to easily convert into a playmaker for his teammates using his vision and passing skills.
Duke already has the No. 7-ranked class in the country, led by ESPNU 100 shooting guard Michael Gbinije (http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=67011) (Chester, Va./Benedictine), but by landing Rivers the Blue Devils are sure to at least jump into the top five.
