Chiefs add 15 new assistants to staff

Chiefs head coach Todd Haley has taken a new approach to the Chiefs bye week. Rather than simply reducing the number of bye-week practice snaps for his veterans, Haley decided to put them to work…with a hat, whistle and call sheet.

On Tuesday, the first of Kansas City’s three bye-week practices, 15 veterans coached their respective position groups alongside their daily position coaches. The scenery included Brandon Flowers holding a football to direct the cornerbacks through pass drops, Tamba Hali leading pass rush instruction and Ron Edwards sending his fellow defensive linemen through the chutes.

Some of the players, like Terrance Copper, dressed in identical clothing as typical Chiefs assistants and were hard to tell apart from the real thing.

“(I’ve had) a lot of different discussions with veteran players through the last year and asking about what parts of bye week they like, what they don’t,” Haley said. “I came to the conclusion that veterans didn’t like bye week period. In that time of thought I came up with this thought of getting some of our leaders and veterans, different reasons for different guys, a little more involved in the communication process with the other players.

“Through one day I’m happy with how things went,” Haley continued. “I thought it was a real productive day for us. I definitely got a little bit better today. Now it’s important we continue that movement tomorrow.”

For the players, the day offered a glimpse at the other side of what goes into preparing a team, and they also had a bit of fun along the way.

“It was great team building and it was great for guys to see it from the other perspective,” LB Corey Mays said. “It’s something that we can all bring back in and give feedback.”

Following practice, we tried to talk to Chris Chambers about his day as a coach, but he declined and stated that he was late for a “staff meeting.” Ah, the demands of a player/coach.

“I’m using them to their fullest,” Haley said.

The 15 Chiefs who transformed into assistant coaches on Tuesday included:

Running Backs: Thomas Jones

Wide Receivers: Chris Chambers; Terrance Copper

Tight Ends: Leonard Pope

Offensive Linemen: Ryan Lilja; Brian Waters; Casey Wiegmann

Defensive Linemen: Ron Edwards; Shaun Smith

Linebackers: Tamba Hali; Mike Vrabel; Demorrio Williams

Defensive Backs: Travis Daniels; Brandon Flowers; Jon McGraw

Haley said that those players would serve as “assistant coaches” for the remainder of the week.

Seriously, WTF?!!

It seems like an interesting way to have leadership from within the team and not just the coaches. If it gets some good results, then

Great idea. Love the outside the box thinking.

When i was in a group home, I was one of the "leaders" of the community. I would be involved in all of the staff meetings and some of the decisions and I was able to give staff feed back on how the residents responded to certain activities and lessons. Was pretty cool.

This is awesome.

Builds leadership and helps the guys bond, and really gives them an idea on how to prep and plan.

This is the best way to have and grow "on the field" coaches.

Awesome.

Fuck that noise.

We don't need Priest disappearing or Tony G flying to Cali for the week.

Have them stick around and build on what they have going. My guess is that these aren't very tough practices, but more like tutorials and advice sessions.

This eliminates the need for the rookie to seek out help from the surly old vet, because it directly puts them in that situation.

Genius idea, Todd.

lol could have used a veteran to coach up Cassel on a week like this like the other positions but of course, the golden boy can't have anything close to touching him at the position. Truly how untouchable Cassel is.

I'm guessing, with the winning, most of the players are truly buying in, and chose to forgo a week off in order to prepare to beat the Colts and show the NFL they are the real deal. Just a guess though.

They never get the week off. It's normally practice until Wed/Thurs and then they are let go until the next week. Granted, it's not full speed in pads.

I’ve heard Harbaugh does something similar with the Ravens. Lets Ray-ray and, I think, Flacco play offensive and defensive coordinators for the last preseason game. The result is they claim to have a better understanding of the other positions and they have fun with it, can’t wait to do it again.

It sounds like Haley has come a long way from the days of Brian Waters' impromptu meetings.

He's listening to the players...and with that and results comes trust.

With trust comes more results. It's a vicious cycle...but a good one.

This is a awesome idea. You can never underestimate what a little shake up like that can do for the team. Especially if it's something fun like that to break up the normal monotony.

When I was in high school, we had a pretty good football team. My senior year, we were headed to regionals for a huge matchup that we weren't expected to win. We'd been practicing hardcore all week getting ready for it. Everyone was tired and very stressed. But a few days before the game, coach rounded us up at the beginning of practice and took us all to the game field. Said he had something different planned for practice that day. Then he paired us up in 2 groups, and said "OK go at it. Yard ball." And he walked to the stands. We made our own crazy plays and had a blast playing however we wanted. And you could feel the tension release through the whole team. It did wonders, and put everybody in the right frame of mind.

Good idea Haley...

They don't get the entire week off but I think the CBA mandates the players be given 4 or 5 days off during the bye week, and they must be consecutive.

I think this is a great idea. As for the days off, I am sure at this point the players are almost unanimous in saying they will do whatever it takes to win. I believe the players that have been around now know the difference with fan reaction between winning and losing, and it really sounds like they appreciate the fans.

I think what they'd like to do is give the vets/starters the rest, meaning not getting banged up/dinged up in practice or just simply have their bodies rest, while staying sharp mentally.

This is great idea by Haley. Let the guys have their fun, but stay focused on the task on hand.

I think the early timing of the bye week and the fact that he wants the momentum to build were both factors in this decision. Plus, it sounds like the players really want to keep building on what they've been doing. If we'd been getting our ass beat it might be a different story.

Our coach threw us out of practice before our state champ game. Said we were all garbage and didn't give a shit about the game and sucked ass. We did the "senior" thing and kept everyone on the practice field and then the coaches continued on, and began to praise us. It was a weird tear down/build up moment. It worked though.

http://www.nfl.com/static/content/catch_all/nfl_image/Weis_Charlie_10.jpg "Are you...are you trying to tell me I sent you out to get lunch, and your attempt was intercepted?"

http://static.nfl.com/static/content/public/image/getty/headshot/C/A/S/CAS541133.jpg "That's one way of putting it."

http://www.nfl.com/static/content/catch_all/nfl_image/Weis_Charlie_10.jpg "Well, that's nothing new. Listen, I've been doing some thinking, and you may not be suited to be a quality control coach. But I have another idea."

http://static.nfl.com/static/content/public/image/getty/headshot/C/A/S/CAS541133.jpg "Great! I can't wait to do some coaching today. Maybe I could try my hand at coaching our receivers?"

http://www.nfl.com/static/content/catch_all/nfl_image/Weis_Charlie_10.jpg "Actually, I've just invented an entirely new coaching position. You'll be working with the defense, specifically the defensive line. I call it 'Squeeze Technique Specialist.' "

http://static.nfl.com/static/content/public/image/getty/headshot/C/A/S/CAS541133.jpg "So I'll be helping our defensive line improve their technique? Great! The best offense is a good defense."

This is so cool in so many ways. Many organizations have workshops that use people in different roles. Haley is applying that technique to his team. I love this guy more every day.

Sounds like a unique way to make practicing during a bye week more tolerable.

I like it. A nice little change for the bye week.

Now, if they get in on making the game plan...that's a different story.

I think the idea is brilliant. What a great way to lighten the mood, but still be productive, while also giving the players some perspective of coaching. Too cool.

cool idea, good players who don't need the work get physical time off while learning what it's like to coach. They will gain respect for coaching and learn even more about their position. Everyone will consider the organization a real "team".

nice

I miss frothing at the mouth todd on the sidelines

but he is working out well
this is good
and the balls out calling this week very good

I still wanna see him yell what the fuck were you thinking at a player this year

It appears that I was as wrong about Haley as I have been about anything ever in my life. I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt last year. I defended him on occasion, because I felt like he needed an opportunity. For most of last year, I felt like Herm Edwards was a better coach.

Now, it could be coordinators. It could be a fluke of a start. But, he is doing more with less than any one with the Chiefs since Marty. And, unlike Marty, I think he has the guts to get the most out of his teams in the playoffs.

This is another example of him thinking out of the box, and I love the idea.

I'm guessing, with the winning, most of the players are truly buying in, and chose to forgo a week off in order to prepare to beat the Colts and show the NFL they are the real deal. Just a guess though.

I don't think that's very likely. These practices weren't optional.

On Tuesday, the first of Kansas City’s three bye-week practices, 15 veterans coached their respective position groups alongside their daily position coaches.

Wow.

Honestly, that's some smart $#it right there.

Douchebag-pretty-boy-Haley seems to impress me more every week as the year goes on...

Haley might end up one of the best coaches we have ever had here in KC.

Possibly, the best.

Great team builder and motivator from what I can see.

Time will tell

He's certainly got balls.

Better than Herm, Grandpa and Gunther for sure.

We'll see about Marty and Hank.

Marty was a shyster.

He should NEVER be spoken of or about in the same sentence as Hank Stram.

http://static.nfl.com/static/content/public/image/getty/headshot/C/A/S/CAS541133.jpg "I know! We'll start off with an accuracy drill!"

http://static.nfl.com/static/content/catch_all/nfl_image/nfl_image_51699.jpg "OK, Matt, stop right there. We have a quarterbacks coach. We had something different in mind for you."

http://static.nfl.com/static/content/public/image/getty/headshot/C/A/S/CAS541133.jpg "....oh. Wait...YOU WANT ME TO BE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR!?!?! Oh this is great! Thanks coach!"

Who knows, 15 years from now one of these players could very well be a head coach some where & it was this day that had so much influence.

Maybe something like this vaulted Herm into the coaching ranks........
