Sorry if this is a repost.

Texas beat Tampa Bay 5-1 earlier and Philly is beating Cincinnati 4-0 right now (game 1 of each series).

Halladay has a no-hitter against the reds through 6 1/3 innings so far.

6.2 for Halladay so far.

As far as I know there has only been 1 no-hitter ever in playoff history (Don Larsen).

That said, the fucks could have had Halladay, Oswalt, and Lee this year. They essentially traded two sets of prospects for Halladay.

This brings up an interesting point....how do you celebrate a post season no hitter? Yes it's special, but in the context of the PS it's really no more important than just a win.

There is no way the Phillies would have traded for Oswalt if they had had Halladay and Lee.

The Padres really didn't collapse as much as they regressed to the mean. That said, they still weren't anything close to a 90 win season. They did a hell of a job this year to get that much out of that team.

This is most likely true. That said a dominant righty-lefty combo like that which could go for 4 out of 7 games on regular rest in any series would be hell on any team.

Conceivably, you could Go 1,2,4,5,7 with them, as Halladay could go 5-6 on short rest and Lee could fill in from there. He pitches well on short rest, too.

Fuck, that'd be a nightmare.

At one point they were losing the NL East by like 7 games and ended up winning it by 7 games.

It's important because it sort of makes a 'grand entrance' and is probably a phenomenal momentum setter. Speaking of that Philly no-hitter, earlier.

I'm not sure who is capable of stopping the Phillies this post season, it's exciting, but they're leaps and bounds the best team left ...w/o a shadow of a doubt, IMO. Should be fun, I think the Braves will beat the Giants, and lose to the Phillies.

So, anyone think the Rangers can win it all?

Best combined ERA of any 4-man staff in the playoffs.

Cliff fucking Lee.

Deadly lineup that hits for power and average. Four or five very good baserunners, including two that are lightning fast.

Veteran catcher who has "been there."

Dominating infield.

Dominating closer who throws 99. Two very good setup men.

Eh? Eh?

The Best matchup for the MLB if they want ratings is probably San Francisco vs NYY.

Philadelphia vs. NYY is probably the next best, but I think everyone will be bored with the Phillies if they make it again.

It's possible, but unlikely. Your 4 man ERA is relatively unimportant. What hurts is you have a bunch of #3 and #4 starters after Lee, and other than the games he starts, you are probably going to be at a disadvantage in the pitching matchup.

Furthermore, your 1B and corner OF are the kinds of players that get eaten alive in postseason baseball (yes, I know Cruz hit a HR today, but he's a K machine).

Giants fans are loyal though. they would sell out in the mid 70's when they sucked and home games would always be on tv. the Jets home games were always blacked out in the mid 70's. and I had to listen to Marty Glickamn and Dave Herman do the play by play on radio.

It doesn't matter what team you are on. If you are the best, people know who you are.

Take Johan Santana for example. He was on the Twins and he was one of the most well known players in the game. He goes to the Mets, the largest city in the US, and now barely anybody mentions him (because he sucks).

You really don't think that players in Toronto don't receive less attention than players in the states? ESPN barely shows Toronto teams (and in some cases, go out of their way to avoid them)....not that I blame them, there is no television market that wants to watch them.

I can tell you that the attention-seeker Chris Bosh noticed it, and it made him want to go to Miami. He's said it repeatedly over the last few months.

UPDATED: Giants release Division Series roster — and Jose Guillen isn’t on it

Posted by Andrew Baggarly on October 7th, 2010 at 10:10 am | Categorized as Uncategorized

The Giants released their division series roster, with one major surprise — and it wasn’t the omission of Barry Zito, which we all knew was coming.

Jose Guillen was left off the list, too.

It really shouldn’t come as a shock, given Guillen’s lack of production and defensive shortcomings. Guillen was hitting .121 and hasn’t driven in a run since his six-RBI game Sept. 19. He has hit a stunning eight double-play grounders in 128 at-bats, too. And he’s 3 for 19 in his career against right-hander Derek Lowe, who loves to get ground balls with his sinker.

But Bruce Bochy’s puzzling loyalties to Guillen seemed strong as he started 15 of the club’s last 16 games in right field.

Guillen started swinging the bat better in mid-September after he got an injection to alleviate pain from a disc issue in his neck. It turns out that was just a temporary fix. Although Bochy kept insisting Guillen was fine, AOL Fanhouse.com’s Jeff Fletcher just Tweeted that Bochy says Guillen’s neck is an issue again.

For some reason, people are willing to accept that certain pitchers like Mo have talents that aren't covered by DIPS theory, but they have trouble acknowledging that there are outliers on the other end too. Shields is a good example of this.

This is pretty awesome.

In two games, Rangers pitchers have allowed one run on eight hits while walking five and striking out 23. This looks like what happened to the Rangers in 1998-99, when they managed just one run in three games over two straight series against the Yankees.

Now the Rangers are turning that on somebody else.

Baseball is a dying sport.

The highest rated game on Wednesdy, the Yankees v. the Twins got a 3.2 rating.

Gotcha.

It is probably tough to hold an audience when the average American can't focus on anything for more than a half of an hour.

Oddly enough, most fans are firmly behind a concept (instant replay) that will slow the game further.

I personnaly think that instant replay is needed in baseball.

These umpires really suck ass.

However, I also think that they do need to initiate some rules to speed up the gaem elsewhere.

Put the picther on a clock.
Limit the number of times a batter can step out of the batter's box.
Limit the number of times that a picther can attempt a pickoff.

Those three would speed up the game, and the third would have the added benefit of increasing stolen basses, which is one of the more exciting plays in baseball, which would draw more fans in.

I enjoy baseball.

I would hate to see it end up on Versus or WE.

Pretty nervous about young Tommy Hunter's first playoff start tomorrow.

I don't want to go back to Tampa tied.

I'd almost prefer they start Cliff Lee on three days' rest.

GoChiefs, You're a K.C. Chiefs fan and a Texas Rangers fan? ...

Buck, You're a K.C. Chiefs fan and Kansas City Royals fan, no?

Close enough and yes.

My mom snuck me into a sports bar in '91 (I was ten) during a wedding reception so we could watch the Black Jack Morris shutout game.

Don't say that, you'll make me feel bad. :(

I heard the Rangers have an excellent starting pitching staff this season ==

Yeah, I hear you. But Cliff Lee in Game 1 of the ALCS is important. Ron "crackhead" Washington has faith! You should too. I'm pulling for the Rangers to go to the Series believe it or not.

I kinda feel bad for Twins fans, I don't really wish this suffering on them. It's not like they are from Chicago.

Suffering? Give Me a Break.

They've won 2 World Series within the last 25 years.

There are much more suffering cities, like San Diego and Kansas City.

I bet the Twins are a much better ballclub than we've seen in this series.

KC_Connection

The Twins were 15-21 vs. the AL East this season. I'm not surprised this is happening again.

If it was up to me, I'd go back to 2 divisions with a balanced schedule, and have the best 4 records in each league make the playoffs.

I am a Chargers and Padres fan. I just needed a hat because it was like 90 degrees and I had no hair and didn't want to get a sunburn on my head so I bought that hat.

I had a Chargers hat that got burned in a fire, and after I bought that hat I accidentally left it in Missouri.

I'm confirming this stat, but pretty sure it's accurate: The Yankees' first missed swing in Game 3 came on the 78th pitch.
