....but I have no clue what I'm looking for. I haven't owned a bike since my 10-speed in 8th grade. Any advice/tips are welcome.

Three-wheeled bikes are more stable, and people will often give you money in parking lots if you're riding one.

Go to a local bike store and see what bikes really feel comfortable to you. If their prices are inflated (they usually are) find the bike online.

What do you want to do with it luv? Ride down a city bike trail? Casual neighborhood riding? Long distance cycling?

I wouldn't know if their prices were inflated or not. How much is too much?

Piggybacking offa this, I'd be interested in advice too. Thinking about next spring/summer getting a bike that would be good for both roads and trails that are mostly paved but not always. I'd have no clue what I'm doing, not sure what to look for, how much to spend, anything else to keep in mind, etc.

We've got great greenway trails, and they're all paved. Want to work hard enough that I get a workout.

Online bikes require assembly and luv is female so ... no go.

But seriously, there are benefits to a local shop. If you haggle you can get a better deal plus coupons for annual maintenance.

I ride a Mongoose that I am very happy with. It is a 21 speed Mountain bike.

I bought mine before the above redesign but it is pretty much the same bike. I was fortunate to get my bike during the Thanksgiving day sale for a whopping $65 though.

Umm, I use mine for the same purpose plus some short city rides. I have a Trek Cruiser - I think you can find some with 3 gears. A single geared cruiser looks awesome and requires some work to pedal.

Whatever you get, I would recommend getting a good lock for it (sigh).

We've got great greenway trails, and they're all paved. Want to work hard enough that I get a workout. There are three basic types of bikes.

Road bikes - built for speed and smooth surfaces
Mountain bikes - built for rugged surfaces
Hybrid bikes - little bit of both bikes above

Personally, I like having the ruggedness of a Mountain bike and then I replace the tires with road tires. I don't do the offroad rides at all.

Agreed, I've locked that bike up for almost 7 years now and it hasn't been stolen back

Liking the looks of this one. Not sure if I want a woman's bike, since they're built for an average woman's frame. I'm a little above average, so I'm not sure about something lightweight.

Start with a craptastic Huffy, Schwinn, or Mongoose. You can get into one of those for $75-150 depending on a number of factors. If you discover you enjoy riding then sink $800+ into something nice that will last a long time and hold up to frequent riding.

I shot them an email making sure that it's a 26", since it says 21" in the description (probably a typo), and to see if I could come out and give it a short ride. I didn't say anything on the price, and I won't unless they email back about it. I'll take $120 with me, but I'll negotiate after I ride it.

I bought a new TREK about 8 years ago. It is a great bike.
Many bike stores carry used bikes that you can get for a good price.

I'd definitely get one with 12 ply tires and you might want to think about installing a tractor seat.

How tall are you? We shopped around a lot for a bike for my wife. I looked at bike shops, and I ended up finding a solid bike at Target. It's called the trailway. I bought here the men's version because it goes on the bike rack easier, and we liked the colors better.

http://www.target.com/Schwinn-700C-Trail-Hybrid-Bike/dp/B000KZ1G7Q/ref=br_1_23?ie=UTF8&id=Schwinn%20700C%20Trail%20Hybrid%20Bike&node=368322011&searchSize=30&searchView=grid5&searchPage=3&sr=1-23&qid=1286630554&rh=&searchBinNameList=subjectbin%2Cprice%2Ctarget_com_primary_color-bin%2Ctarget_com_size-bin%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin&searchRank=-price&frombrowse=1

If you aren't at least 5'8", I would recommend going with the laidies version.

http://www.target.com/Ladies%E2%80%99-Schwinn-700C-Trail-Hybrid/dp/B000KZ4MI6/ref=br_1_24?ie=UTF8&id=Ladies%E2%80%99%20Schwinn%20700C%20Trail%20Hybrid&node=368322011&searchSize=30&searchView=grid5&searchPage=3&sr=1-24&qid=1286630554&rh=&searchBinNameList=subjectbin%2Cprice%2Ctarget_com_primary_color-bin%2Ctarget_com_size-bin%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin&searchRank=-price&frombrowse=1

All a moot point if you like and buy the bike you are going to look at.

21" is the frame size, and that's a big sized frame. Adult bikes have 26" wheels, but usually people just assume that and don't mention it in an ad.

Some sweet deals and lemons in that pile, for sure.
