The Sports Illustrated tell-all article on the sports agent industry has already created a problem for one of its subjects.

ESPN tells Liz Mullen of the Sports Business Journal that they are looking into allegations that agent Gary Wichard and Mel Kiper's relationship is a little too cozy.

"We just learned of the story today and are looking into it," ESPN's statement read.

In the excellent article by George Dohrmonn, former sports agent Josh Luchs recalls a story where Wichard arranged for Kiper to call during a meeting in 2000 with Stanford defensive lineman Willie Howard.

"Gary and I were talking to Willie in Gary's office when Gary's phone rang, and he put it on speakerphone," Luchs recalls. "'Viper, how are you?' Gary said. That's what he called Mel, Viper or Vipe. 'Viper, I'm sitting here with the best defensive lineman in college football. Do you know who that is?'

'You must be with Willie Howard,' Mel said."

This isn't the first time there have been questions raised about Kiper's relationships with Wichard. PFT wrote an article back in April about Kiper's ranking of Jimmy Clausen as his top prospect at quarterback. Clausen was a Wichard client.

In an article for the Washington Post, Kiper admitted that he's friends with many agents but denied any favoritism.

"I don't shill for anybody," Kiper said.

Kiper denied Luch's version of the Howard story to SI, saying there wasn't a prearranged call. He says he has similar conversations with players for many agents. Howard, on the other hand, said Kiper called, confirming Luch's story.

Whether Kiper's evaluations are unbiased or not, the story presents a major problem for the draft guru. ESPN must consider whether they want one of their analysts helping agent friends to land clients.

gonna be very hard to prove intent

Kiper's job leads him to interact with all these people and unless there is some phone tape around with kiper admitting to kick backs for a good evaluation then it's not going anywhere.

Kiper is not part of any college
Kiper is not part of the NFL

Unless Espn suddenly tells him to not have any contact with any agents

Like people didn't ****ing know this (Aqib Talib) for years.

What do you mean?

Aquib Talib has 3 INTs in 3 games for a 3-1 team.

Are you implying Talib was overrated?

I thought it was pretty obvious especially this year on some of McShay's reactions to Kiper's picks that he thought the man had gone insane.

You can't just look at ints and determine how good a cb is.

Why would ESPN even care? So Kiper has connections and repays them by giving their clients some draft buzz, what's the issue?

I suppose that's true.

Then again he did have the single most important play in winning a BCS game but I guess he's no good.

I'm probably illiterate with comprehension issues and some kind of vision challenge, but what exactly is Kiper supposed to have done wrong? Talking to an agent?

Are we really so naive as to believe that the media doesn't promote certain players above others and play favorites and that individual reporters don't accept money under the table?

The problem is that ESPN bills Kiper as some kind of fact-finder or objective draft "analyst." When Kiper proceeds to tell us all who the best players are, we assume that he's telling us exactly that: who the best players are. It hurts the product ESPN is selling if, based on these events, we believe that Kiper is not telling us who the best players are, but is instead telling us some combination of who his friends are representing and who is kind of good.

I don't think anyone is saying Kiper is a criminal, but I can see why ESPN is concerned.
