KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City earned a dubious ranking when Forbes.com announced that Kansas City ranked as the No. 3 most dangerous city in the U.S.
The rankings were put together by combining the Federal Bureau of Investigation's violent crime data with the rate of fatal car crashes.
Tops on the list is Memphis, Tenn., followed by St. Louis.
Forbes warned that the list only provides a general ranking, but each person should use their own criteria for determining personal safety.

“There are zones in safe cities that are way off the chart for crime rates, but when you average it across all of the city, it doesn’t look so bad,” Bruce McIndoe, president of Maryland-based iJet Intelligent Risk Systems, a risk-assessment firm, said in the Forbes.com article. “When people move into cities, they should be finding out the lay of local land. A homeowner would want to do due diligence and look at it neighborhood by neighborhood -- not just by city.”
Forbes said it used FBI data on the number of violent crimes per 100,000 residents in 2009, and Department of Transportation data on the number of traffic fatalities per 100,000 residents in 2008 (the most recent available). They ranked all cities with a population above 250,000. Forbes said a lack of data prevented them from including Chicago, Las Vegas and Virginia Beach, Va., in the rankings.
"We can stand around and cheerlead, and whine when stats come out that paint us in what we think is less than flattering light, but when we have problems, we need to address them," said Mayor Mark Funkhouser.
The Top 10 list is:
1. Memphis, Tenn.
2. St. Louis, Mo.
3. Kansas City, Mo.
4. Detroit, Mich.
5. Miami, Fla.
6. Tulsa, Okla.
7. Nashville-Davidson, Tenn.
8. Indianapolis, Ind.
9. Oklahoma City, Okla.
10. Stockton, Calif.
(tie) Atlanta, Ga.

I lived in St. Louis for 5 years. Everybody knows that when you go there, you stay the hell away from East and North St. Louis. And both are easy to avoid.

True, there are a lot of REALLY bad drivers in KC. The worst for me are the people that do not know how to drive on a highway properly. Don't know how to get up to speed to merge without almost causing a wreck, or getting out of the right lane when people are trying to merge, or getting out of the left lane when people are trying to pass. I swear everyday on my commute there seems to be more idiot drivers than there were the day before.

I went by the 'landing' when i visited there for the mizzou illinois game and people kept telling me to stay downtown for fun and avoid 'the landing' at night cause of issues with people having guns etc and fights and shootings. Funny thing is the hotel just down the street we stayed at recommended it. We ate dinner there and then partied downtown, it was fun

Yeah, I don't really know what they're talking about. I want to the Landing pretty much every weekend. I mean, yeah, if you hang out to close to the Casino, sometimes weird shit happens. But if you stay by the bars, I've never seen any fights or shootings. Maybe that's just me.

Holy crap, tonight on my way home from work, which is I35N as well, coming from Olathe this guy on a motorcycle was in front of me on the on ramp and he was going maybe 40 mph tops. It's absolutely impossible to merge when you're going that slow, and he made me have to pass him on the right before the lane ended so I could get over. I saw the truck behind him had to slow way down to keep from hitting him. This was at like 5:10 or so. I wonder if it was the same guy.

It was pretty busy and chill during the early evening but a few people that worked at restaraunts there told us to avoid it due to 'hip hop' nights and how people from the east side were showing up alot more lately. A bartender I talked to there got robbed after he left a casino at gunpoint, scary. I had a great time in STL though, hangin downtown there were some cool bars and dinner at the landing was good. Alot of people walking around downtown and having a good time, i never felt scared even walking back at 3am to the hotel.

That is because violent crime here is usually confined to the inner city and takes place against people that know each other, at least in kc. Thugs, gangbangers or criminals GENERALLY are not going to attack unknown people for no reason just strolling around town

I'd agree. I lived in KC for 15 yrs. and have lived in Atlanta now for less than 6 months and I can't remember seeing as much violence and crime on the news in KC as I have so far here in Atlanta. Lots of crime here. At the same time it could just mean the criminals in Atlanta are far worse at getting caught than the ones in KC I suppose.

I worked in Detroit for about 6 months a couple of years ago, and it was completely different... the highway speed limit within the city is 70, everyone drives 80+, and it was a much better driving experience. From right to left there's the fast lane, the really fast lane, and the really fast lane. Even though I've only driven through Atlanta a couple of times, it seems pretty similar. It's fast and seems intimidating at first, but people know what the left lane is for, know how to enter/exit the highway, aren't completely confused by yield signs, etc.

Kansas City (and Omaha) drivers suck.

Every time I was in KC it was a good experience.

We hung out downtown and did a lot of walking all over the place. Hung out in Westport (although it was a somewhat rougher crowd than downtown) for a couple hours without any issues and while I did notice some downtrodden neighborhoods on the drive there it seemed just like any other city I've been too in the past. You can go from a cities finest area to somewhere where you chances of becoming a statistic just doubled just about anywhere unless anywhere in the USA unless you're somewhere like Bar Harbor Maine.

Try taking a wrong turn in Baltimore if you think KC is bad. Me thinks these rankings are bunk.

If you think an entire area is a shithole, the problem is probably you.

I live in Oakland and I'm actually offended Oakland was not on the list. Also lived in Tulsa for 3 years, find it hard to believe Tulsa OK is more dangerous than Oakland.

I'm in Tulsa now. Think I'll go home and mount a .50 on my truck tonight.

How can you folks stand to live in such a violent city? Move to Oakland where you can relax. There are seats available in the stadium....

I've never been to KC but there's no way anyone can tell me with a straight face that it's more dangerous than NYC or Newark or Oakland or L.A. or Detroit or Philadelphia or et cetera. But here's a news flash: nowhere is safe. The bigger the city, the more likely it is to have trouble areas, but even mid- to small-sized cities have areas you probably don't want to be going into. I've lived in Boston, Tampa, Syracuse, and Providence, and all of them have areas I'd barely drive around in the sunshine, never mind at night.

Ya know, if they add the "Have the letters K-A-N-S-A-S C-I-T-Y in your city's name" variable to it, we might top the list. Ooooops, I forgot, KCK!!!

Nashville ranking 7th on that list is insane. It has to be one of the safest, white bread cities i've ever been to.

I'm sure there might be some small pocket where there's tons of gang violence, but the overwhelming majority of the metro area is very nice.

KC ahead of Detroit, Atlanta, New Orleans, Baltimore, Miami etc is retarded.

KC is ahead of Baltimore? Haven't these fuckers ever seen The Wire?

Omar is getting upset.

Per Capita violent crime.

Per Capita violent crime.

Exactly. In the article that Bob Dole linked, my specific neighborhood has one crime per 1,042 people, making it the safest in the country per capita.

I don't think that people here understand the methodology, nor do they live in Kansas City. They may live in Liberty or O.P. or Lenexa or Blue Springs, but those cities are NOT included in this report.

It's been awhile since I read that article, but I believe they factored in traffic accidents somehow... And since people in MO think Kansans drive like shit, and people in KS think Missourians (sp?) drive like shit.. That probably means we both drive like shit...

The methodology is garbage because they are factoring in traffic accidents to determine how dangerous a city is, when they should just focus on murder and violent crime rates.

JFC, Dude. That's the whole point of this exercise.

Regardless, Kansas City ranks extremely high in murders per capita. Throw in the dangers of traffic accidents and it ranks even higher.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_cities_by_crime_rate

St. Louis is number one and Kansas City number eight in total violent crime.

The shithole that is Oakland, California is number four.
