View Full Version : Football Another Mile High view into Week 7...

Mile High Mania

As we head into Week 7, I'm taking a look at what I think will happen this week within the AFCW.

Right now, it looks like this:

Chiefs 3-2 overall / 1-0 Division
Raiders 2-4 overall / 1-0 Division
Broncos 2-4 overall / 0-0 Division
Chargers 2-4 overall / 0-2 Division

Chiefs host the Jaguars (3-3)
Broncos host the Raiders
Chargers host the Patriots (4-1)

The Chiefs should win this game, the Jags have been sporadic this season and they're having QB issues, so who knows which guy is at QB this week. If KC can do what they've been doing in the ground attack, they should be able to win this one fairly easily and without expecting much from Cassel. I think KC wins by double digits, ending their 2 game slide and moving to 4-2.

The Broncos host the Raiders and while these teams have split the last two seasons, the Raiders have won both of the games in Denver. The Raiders have played well in spurts, but they have lost to the Titans, Cardinals, Texans and 49ers. The Broncos have finally moved past the hardest part of their schedule - the toughest so far in the league, but they're not playing horribly. The Raiders have a nice secondary, but Denver's receivers should be able to have success. I have no idea what to expect with Oakland really, aside from last week they had scored 23 or more points in their previous 3 games. That being said, I think Denver ends the drought at home and takes back the keys, moving to 3-4.

Chargers... man oh man, they historically start out bad with Norv, but after losing last week and the injuries they are dealing with, this may continue to get ugly. The Chargers are staring at the Patriots, Titans and then Houston before their bye week. Could they lose them all? Quite possibly and I certainly think they'll lose against NE this week sending them to 2-5.

So, after the dust settles, we'll be looking at this for the AFCW:

Chiefs 4-2 overall / 1-0 Division
Broncos 3-4 overall / 1-0 Division
Raiders 2-5 overall / 1-1 Division
Chargers 2-5 overall / 0-2 Division

The next 3 for each:
Chiefs - Bills / @ Raiders / @Broncos (should be 2-1)
Broncos - @ SF (London) / BYE / Chiefs / @ Chargers (should be 3-0 or 2-1)
Raiders - Seahawks / KC / BYE / @ Steelers (should be 1-2)
Chargers - Titans / @ Texans / BYE / Broncos (should be 1-2 or 0-3)

Denver will be within a game of or possibly tied with KC leading up to that matchup at Arrowhead - should be a very interesting week 13.

Can I take a guess as to who beats us?

Sure - I think KC/Den will split the home games, I've said that all along and every year when I project games, I think the divisional games typically split.

I see San Diego lighting up New England this week.

I also think Denver goes 1-2 in that 3 game stretch beating only the Chiefs.

Yeah I also think we'll lose in Denver. Its the 2nd game of the 2 game road trip on the West coast, and Denver will be coming off a bye. But, I think we'll go 3-0 in the next 3, so that'll put us at 6-3.

I dunno, Floyd is out and Gates appears to be a game-time decision... if neither of them plays, I don't know how SD keeps up with NE.

And, regarding SF - they have talent and could defeat Denver, but I don't see it happening. Denver should have beat the Jets, had the guy not committed the PI on that 4th and 6, Denver would have won. Denver has played well and I think we'll see the record improve with this next stretch of games.

This will be a cripple fight to the finish. I think the Chiefs take the division, but that has more to do with the state of the division (and their weak schedule) than anything else. Raiders stink. Chargers, you really don't know if they make a surge or not at this point. Broncos have played the toughest schedule by far, even though it is not showing up in the w/l column, I think they are a better team this year than last. Injuries are hurting them right now. I could see them going 1-2 or 3-0 in the next three.

I don't think it matters. Rivers will carve up that secondary at home and they still have a solid running game.

Denver also played thet Jets at home where they have a huge advantage and I'm still not sold that the Jets are as good as their record. I also think eventually San Fran will put it all together and be the team everyone expected.

If Rivers is without Floyd and Gates, I just don't see how the others will step up... they could have some success, but I don't think they're good enough to be consistent on offense without those top 2 weapons.

I agree about the Chargers. Rivers has been great w/out Jackson, but w/out Gates & Floyd? He can't do it all by himself. Nanee and Buster Davis would be his top targets....I gotta think Belichick can find a way to stop those 2.

Patriots roll....IMO

The Jaguars are really a weird team to figure out...

They beat Denver, Indy, Bills and lose to Chargers, Eagles and Titans.

The Jags are 2-2 at home and 1-1 on the road...

Not really. They always play Indi tough no matter what and the Bills are the worst team in the NFL. The Charges, Eagles and Titans are all good teams and Denver is so-so. So they beat the bad and okay teams and lost to the good teams. And like I said they always play Indi tough.

I still think they will, but I'm not expecting SD to give up 2 special teams TD's to NE. If they do then that could be the turning point. New England is a solid team, but no longer are they a top team in the league in my opinion.

Agreed, people are reading too much into the Rams loss. This is one of those games that suckers everybody in. The Rams beat the Chargers so they must suck and the Pats beat the Ravens so they must have righted the ship.

WHAAATTT??? Who said that? I just said they aren't an elite team any longer with all the players they have lost and failed to replace. Do you disagree this isn't the same Pats type teams of the early to mid part of the last decade?

This isn't a 13-3 12-4 Pats team we are accustomed to seeing, more like 10-6 IMO. Not horrible but they have many flaws.

Rivers, Manning & Schaub all had nice performances (yds, %, etc) against the vaunted KC secondary. Denver's passing game is pretty damn good and in Denver, yeah I like their chances.

Denver was destroyed by BALT's ground attack, but in the other 5 games - it's been pretty respectable. Only two teams have more than 130 combined yards and only 2 QBs have thrown for more than 200 yards against Denver.

Looking at KC on the road this season, there's nothing that creates great concern for me this year... point to 2009 all you like, but KC is a Brandon Flowers INT away from being 0-3 on the road and 2-3 overall.

KC - scary? Not at all... :)

You must have missed the last game we played at Invesco........how did you feel after that game?

Man ... if the Dolts lose to New England, they'll be 2 and 5. Are they basically out of the running in the AFCW, at that point?

If they're 3 and 6 at their bye week, they would have to practically run the table for the remainder of the season to have a chance. Not gonna happen.

It's amazing how far they've fallen (thank, in large measure, to us). Norv has received a public vote of confidence from their front office, though. That's good.

FAXWith the way Floyd has been playing as #1 WR, this slow start can barely be blamed on Vincent Jackson's absence. This is a Norv Turner style team. They're undisciplined, unprepared, and just aren't that good. That's the head coach's fault.

If the Chargers don't make the playoffs, there's a 100% chance that Turner gets his ass thrown out the door

I'm probably wrong about this, but I thought that Norv had just received a contract extension, maybe? Or, maybe it was just a deal where AJ told the press that Norv had the full support of ownership ... ?

Anyhow, I seem to recall reading something like that somewhere ... kind of recently, too ... had to do with their traditional "slow start" ...

You're really ready to put Orton in the same sentence as 3 stud QBs in the NFL? Really?

Plus, Manning's numbers were actually pretty substandard.

The Chiefs secondary is a growing unit, with an insane amount of young talent. I understand coming from Denver, and having 3 members of your secondary on AARP, you don't understand what that looks like, but I'm sure you'll get to know it in a few weeks.

Denver will be within a game of or possibly tied with KC leading up to that matchup at Arrowhead - should be a very interesting week 13.

Enh, say what you will, but the most difficult stretch is over for Denver. There are still some tough games, but nothing like the last month.

3-2
2-4

That's far from insurmountable... KC isn't perfect and there are many weeks left.

You forgot about that Oakland Raider buzzsaw didn't ya? ROFL

... I think Denver ends the drought at home and takes back the keys, moving to 3-4.

Maybe they should have just left the keys on the kitchen counter...

As I recall, you felt pretty good about the last game in Invesco too. Worked out well.

Hey ... a lot of it is the OLINE, let's not forget that and who was the QB having fun against KC for a majority of the game again?

Enjoy it...

There is no possible way you could have anticipated this score, Mr. Mile High Mania. The Raiders didn't score that many points in all of last season's games combined.

It was just one of those games in which the goats began self-destructing from the get-go and, once they were down by 31, it was too late. The good news, though, is that a game like this is much easier to put behind you and deal with emotionally ... compared to your losses to a dominant and vastly superior team like the ones you've been experiencing, I mean.

I continue to wonder, however, about McDipstick and his job security.

Well in all honesty a loss helped them move past a difficult hurdle in their rise to championship glory. No team want's to throw a win in the gears when such a precise machine is running so smoothly.
