This thread is dedicated to things that, when looked, heard, felt, experienced, "affect with great wonder; astonish" -- simply, amaze us.

I expect the usual replies, the Chiefs winning the division, that so and so hasn't been banned yet, that frazod is not yet in prison for a brutal murder, that gochiefs is now playing the Rousseau character circa 1730s, etc. I hope to get some real thoughtful replies, though, too, which can often be found here.

Here's my first contribution:

This is Mozart's 5th Symphony. It was written when he was 9 years old. While he was seriously ill. Please listen to the Allegro (the first part up to 2min 40sec), which I find so completely charging and dynamic that it compulses me to listen in just amazement.

Think about one there you mentioned above. Mozart was 9 years old and this was his 5th! symphony. I have to wonder how old he was when he wrote the first one.

Probably because you're looking at it as a simple spectacle, a show, and don't know the physics of what it is your looking at, or the research and development required to get to that point.
The Rubiks Cube kid is kinda cool but solving one is simply remembering patterns. There's a guy in YouTube doing it blindfolded. Seems I remember seeing a chimpanzee that was trained to do it.
The guy with no arms picking a guitar is pretty cool in that I couldn't do it, and honestly wouldn't have the motivation to try having arms and all.

Einstein's General and Special Relativity. If you've been half way interested but never studied it in school or think it's too much to grasp (or if you have no idea what I'm talking about) I'd highly recommend you check out this short series.

Chapter 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rl3Z9yCTn8

Chapter 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgsKlSnUO0k

Chapter 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6o_-yTa168

Chapter 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSOPq9rZYcU

The videos really focus more on Special Relativity (how time is relative) and the phenomenon of how light does not act the same way as everything else, hence the possibility of time travel as you approach the speed of light because time slows down more and more the faster you go.

The first video is a little bit simplistic, but it's a great intro to what exactly relativity is and how it effects us. Then the rest of the vids really start opening up your mind; or at least did for me. They provide an understanding of the theories without the need for all of the Math and Physics knowledge. Truly amazing stuff.

Dave Lane
10-23-2010, 03:58 PM
Having been an engineer I can appreciate Einstein's general theory and his special theory. Unbelievably cool stuff. Yes the horse power / jet propulsion is interesting but it's a machine and I'd find the mars rover infinitely more interesting but it is after all a machine. I kinda like thoughts, ideas and human feats that are amazing. Just me. Plus I've had too many cars that were "muscle" cars to be very awed by them anymore.

One thing that's pretty amazing to me is the fact that midgets are still allowed to basically run loose in the world. There are no midget islands or midget work camps or midget re-education facilities where midgets can be sent to make license plates or small toys they can construct with their tiny, fat, stubby, little fingers. Essentially, a midget can go wherever he wants and do whatever he pleases. This means that a midget can attack you from behind at any time whether it be on a train or in your own house. In fact, because midgets are basically running wild, large groups of midgets can band together and make life miserable for you by camping out in your front lawn, putting up their tiny, little tents, and building campfires they use to cook beans and cornbread. Then, when you come home one afternoon and observe these midgets and you call the police and the police come over to your house to try and get rid of the midgets, the midgets escape from the police because the handcuffs are too large to restrain their midget wrists and they can wriggle through even the slightest cracks left open in the cruiser window. Then, the escaped midgets raise a big, damn fuss and paint your house a bright orange color which is an international signal to all midgets everywhere that, if a midget happens to be in your neighborhood, that midget is supposed to pull down his miniature, little pants and poop right on your porch in the middle of the night.

A lady sit in a right turn lane while our light is red, but no one is coming across. The left turn arrows for our lanes of traffic turns green, and she edges up and tries to turn right in front of them.

People constantly turn out of a lot without even looking or stopping, and then go 5-10 mph under the speed limit.

Four lights in a row going underneath a highway overpass. All lights are green except for the last one. Traffic is backed up through the other three lights. Some moron lets one or two people coming off the highway turn in front of them! Hello! It's not like they're waiting to turn out of a parking lot. They will get their light!

Ugh!
