X-Factor's Inside the Huddle-Ruck the Faiders

There was a time, according to legend, when the Kansas City Chiefs and the Oakland Raiders had a rivalry that meant something in the grand scheme of things that is the NFL. A walk through the parking lot prior to any KC or Oakland game will reveal men with long, gray beards wearing a tattered and faded George Blanda jersey, or carrying a crumpled program from Super Bowl IV. They can be heard mumbling long-forgotten names such as Otis Taylor, Gene Upshaw, Hank Stram and Buck Buchanan. You might even hear them mutter something about a Biletnikoff. Yes, it was a golden age of football . . . before instant replay, fantasy leagues and TV timeouts. It was a time when football players scoffed at the idea of hits over the middle being too vicious.
And it was a time when Kansas City and Oakland hated each other. You didn’t see players milling around after a game sharing a laugh or two. If there wasn’t a fight during a Chiefs-Raiders game in which at least one player removed his helmet and was using it as a weapon, then it wasn’t a real game.

It’s been so long ago that the rivalry has taken on almost mythic proportions. But, just maybe, the rivalry is back. Not to the level it once was, but at least when the Chiefs play Oakland on Sunday it will mean more than who gets the higher draft pick next winter. Both teams are on top of the AFC West and in the hunt for the playoffs, which hasn’t happened since the first debate over “great taste or less filling.” With the Chiefs on the road for Sunday’s game it might be easy to assume they are the underdogs. But that would be true only in Las Vegas. The fact is, Oakland Coliseum has been Kansas City’s home away from home. The Chiefs have won a remarkable seven straight games at Oakland and 15 of the last 20.
So give the home field edge to Kansas City.

Statistically, the Chiefs have a slight advantage in most every meaningful category, including:
•Rushing offense. KC enters the game as the No. 1 team in the NFL (190.4 ypg) following their 274 yards rushing against Buffalo. Oakland is a distant No. 2 (168.5 ypg), so it’s no secret what these two teams want to do. Some outstanding runningbacks will be on the field this weekend.
•Rush defense. Give the edge to KC (96.4 ypg) who is currently No. 7 in the league while Oakland (127.4 ypg) is 26th. This would seem to bode well for the Chiefs.
•QB protection. Oakland has given up 22 sacks - third most in the NFL. Tamba Hali has reportedly been fasting all week because he plans to feast on Jason Campbell.
•Asomugha is out. Oakland cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is out for this game with a high ankle sprain. That could mean a big game for Dwayne Bowe who has caught five TD passes in the last three games.
•Third down efficiency. The Raiders are ranked 28th in the league in their ability to convert third down plays (only 34.7%). Playoff teams have to put up better numbers than that.
•Special teams. Oakland is averaging only 20 yards per kickoff return and 8.1 yards per punt return. Al Davis should be able to do that from his rocking chair. And, Kansas City is No. 1 in kickoff coverage while the Raiders are No. 26. Just in case you’re wondering how this Oakland team stacks up against their Silver and Black predecessors, the Raiders are dead last in penalties with 10 more than the next team. Some things never change.

While the gray-beards still respect this rivalry, it remains to be seen whether so many young Chiefs and Raiders still understand the animosity that is part of the history between these two teams. Long-time KC veterans Brian Waters and Casey Wiegmann know what this rivalry is about. Hopefully, players like Eric Berry, Dexter McCluster and Tony Moeaki are quick to grasp that this rivalry can - and should - be something special. To despise the Raiders isn’t something acquired over time. It’s something within the Chiefs’ gene pool. There is no cure. Then again, why would you want one?

Prior to being picked up off the waiver wire by Tennessee there was some speculation that maybe . . . just maybe . . . Randy Moss could end up wearing red and gold. Moss, after all, liked the New England system and we are sometimes referred to as New England West. In addition, there were unconfirmed reports that KC offered a fifth round draft pick to New England for Moss prior to him being sent to Minnesota for a third round pick.
The Chiefs are a young team with an emphasis, as general manager Scott Pioli said, on the “right 53” players. It would seem that Moss, for all his talent, was No. 54.

Those Chiefs-Raiders games in the 60s and early 70s were classic, and as you say, there isn't any rivalry that compares to the hate these two franchises had for each other.

we can stop the run too, we destroyed the Seahawks' offensive line. Jared Veldheer is proving himself to be a solid LT and won't be easily run over, he'll be the one feasting on Tamba Hali. Robert Gallery is holding the LG spot down pat, and hell even Samson Satele (center), Cooper Carlisle (RG) and Langston Walker (RT) are doing a better job than in the past.

The Chiefs play one of the weakest schedules in the NFL.

You beat one of the consistently worst teams in the league in the Browns, beat Jacksonville (a team that isn't as good as their record shows), and a Buffalo squad that is the absolute worst in the league. When you played tougher teams like the Colts & Texans you get beat.
