Great win for the Chiefs! Got to keep it up...

I don't post much but I'm starting to wonder if Mike Vrabel should be out there. Guy is super slow, misses tackles, generates no pass rush and seems to have little fire. I know several are going to say he is the coach on the field and makes the calls, etc. With the emergence of DJ, is Vrabel worth having out there?

I'm tired of Vrabel and really feel that he is more of a liability than a positive. He seems to have little impact on the game especially when I watch him individually. I sure hope we upgrade that spot in the offseason. I'm somewhat surprised Demorio Williams hasn't been awarded the position considering how ineffective Vrabel is. Am I being too hard on the guy?

Keep him as a "coach" for a replacement that we draft in 2011.

He's going to become the DC and Trent Green will become the OC.

I don't think you are. I'm pretty sure Pioli is drafting an OLB opposite of Tamba, so we should be OK next year. Hopefully.

What does the emergence of DJ have to do with Vrabel?

I don't think Vrabel is going anywhere. At least not till next season. The Stude Dude has had chances, and he just can't pry the starting job from old ass Vrabel. We have no one better at the moment...

I remember him making some decent plays earlier this year but yeah, he's pretty much disappeared recently.

I actually think as a whole he's been a positive acquisition considering how young the defense is. Not sure how much he left in the tank now, but I think he's helped in the transition to the type of team we have now. Hopefully guys like Berry and DJ can eventually become leaders. The mental aspect of playing defense probably gets underrated most of the time. Especially considering how many young guys we throw out there.

I got a weird vibe from him yesterday.

After starting the tomahawk chant of victory (could you hear it on TV?), i went down behind the bench..got a thumbs up from Casey, shook hands with one of the sherriffs who travels with the team..and Vrabel is trying to get his son down on the field..railing is high, so I start to lift his son up over the rail to him, but alas, security dude nixes it...I put his son down and say great game and he ignored me..from two feet away.

....as afar as the OP, ....tk13 is spot on, IMO.

Two thoughts:

1) Fuck him, then. Every single member of that organization should have done even something small to recognize you guys - it looked like there was quite a bit of red in the stands, especially the lower level on our sideline.

2) Hope you had a great time. I sent you a text during the game, but didn't hear back from you - assumed that either you don't get texts on your phone, or that you didn't have easy access to it.

For the record, Pats fans were begging BB to draft an OLB for, oh, about five years now. It remains the weakest part of our team. Some FAs were supposed to fill that gap, but Rosey Colvin wasn't quite as good as hoped (especially after the hip issue) and Adalius Thomas completely flamed out.

But yeah -- if SP follows the BB model of drafting, you guys are going to spend YEARS bitching about no OLB being drafted.

He was brought in to be a leader on the team. I'm sure it payed some dividends in training camps but at this point he brings pretty much nothing on the field.

I'm sure the Chiefs are looking to make a move there next year.

His position is certainly a candidate for upgrading in the offseason, since that's ideally where a second pass rusher would be situated. For right now, we're 7-4 so I'm firmly in his camp.

I agree that he's lost a step or four, but I also think he helps make sure that other players are in position to make a play, and he may be a reason why we don't have the glaring missed assignments and gaffes that marked the defense in past seasons.

And in follow up to my last email, if we don't use at least one of our top three picks (we have 2 1sts, a 2nd from Carolina that is looking alot like the #33 pick in the draft) on an OLB, there might be a mutiny up here against BB.

Ok, just kidding. Only releasing Brady could cause that reaction. But still, alot of people (including me) are going to be very annoyed. WE HAVE NO PASS RUSH! And I fully expect us to NOT win the SB this year because of that fact.

Question -- do you guys run many blitzes, or is it more conservative, two-gap read and react? I'm wonder if RAC is running a BB-style defense or more of something of his own.

I don't know what the stat is now... but we were dead last in the league in blitzes for the first 6-7 weeks. I think he's been blitzing more recently... but we're definitely not the Jets out there. Usually rush the front 3 plus Hali, drop guys into coverage and keep everything in front of you.

DJ seems like a logical choice to become the team leader on defense thus not needing Vrabel for that.

Sounds fairly Belichickian (so to speak). More of a bend-but-don't-break style. This has been especially true as our defense has gotten younger. I think he fears blown assignments, etc. with such a young group of guys, so even with the mediocre pass rush, we're not sending any/many extra guys.

Vrabes is a great leader, is very bright, and has been playing this defense (if it's similar to the Pats') for like 10 years now. Dunno what DJ's strengths are, but just being a physical specimen doesn't mean you can take over that role. Of course, maybe he can. I'm certainly not one to give any opinion on that.

But yeah, Vrabes is nearer to the end than the start of his career, without doubt.

I bet. I was as well.

Glad you had a good time. Outside shot I'll be up this weekend for the Denver game. I'll give you a call if I make it.

Based on everything I heard in the draft, I'd think Berry was the logical choice. I haven't really seen DJ step up in leadership, but then again I'm just a guy who watches TV.

DJ has never been anything close to a leader on the field. He's been playing well, but there's a huge difference in performance and leadership.

I would like to see Demorrio Williams play more for Vrabel. Williams seems to really get good pressure when he is placed in that role. I have no clue why we don't allow Williams to become our pass-rush specialist. He gets solid pressure, and is quick off the edge. Way quicker than Vrabel or Studebaker. He just isn't given the opportunity enough.
