I had a similar close call when I used to maintain helicopters on Tuna fishing super seiners. The pilot came in to land on the boat. There was a rain squall coming. I strapped it down and he shut down. The bell 47 I was maintaining didn't have a rotor brake, which was stupid for them to send a chopper out without one. When the blades started slowing down and the wind from the storm hit, the main rotor blades started going crazy.

The pilot and I were on both sides trying to slow the blades down by hand, they were going slow enough that we could kinda grab the base of the blades with each revolution trying to slow them down.

The boat turned sideways and then the blades just started flopping and one of them struck the tail boom chopping the tail boom off. I ducked just in time because when one blade struck the tail boom, the drag brace broke and the blades jackknifed and the other blade came around, just over my head and hit the base of the tail boom chopping it off.

I was lucky as shit.
