My truck is killing me on gas mileage and I will be driving further to my new job, so I've been looking at new cars the past few days. I've narrowed my choices down to the following:

Toyota Camry XLE
Honda Accord EX-L
Ford Fusion SEL

All models have pretty much the same options and warranty periods. All are also generally in the same price range.

I'm leaning towards the Fusion now, probably because it was last one I drove. It has a little smaller interior, but the SYNCH technology is pretty awesome looking.

I can't say that any of the models have any serious drawbacks, so I'm curious if anyone has any experience or opinions on any of these.

What say you, ChiefsPlanet?

Quite candidly, I'd find a 5 or so year old car and go the used route. Nobody wants to buy new (because they're broke) so they gobble up the newer used cars, but if you stay a tier lower, you can save yourself some big cash, and these cars are running an awefully long time.

I had an 06 Pontiac G6 that I really liked and would have run forever.

In reference to the cars listed, I would probably go with the Ford. I think they're doing things as right as anyone right now. I heard one guy say the Sync system was complicated and cumbersome, but I will not vouch for his intellectual prowess.

What say you, ChiefsPlanet? In 1987 I bought my first Toyota Camry. I bought low end because that was all I could afford. That Camry had 299,950 miles on it when it was totaled in an accident. My second Camry was a 1991, it had 155,000 miles on it when I hit a deer and totaled it.

My wife has a hybrid that has nearly 200,000 miles on it.

I recently traded a 2000 Camry with 240,000 miles on it for a 2008 Pickup, it's also a Toyota.

Of all of those cars I had little or no maintenance issues. I've never seen a reason to fix what isn't broken. I'd recommend the Camry.

If you like them all equally and you are planning on keeping it for a long time, go with the one that you can get cheapest. If you think you might get rid of it in a few years, go with the Honda or Toyota. The resale will be a lot better.

My in-laws have had a string of Accords that they drive all over the country. They haven't had any problems with them, though they have mentioned that they don't like the newer one as well as the older ones (I don't know why). I think the one they have is a 2007.

Look again. While the Accord slimly beats out the Fusion for projected resale value, the Fusion beats the Camry there too.

If you are leaning towards the Fusion because you like that car better, there is no reason to not go with it. It's as reliable as the Accord and the Camry and holds it's value just as well. And yes, Sync is awesome. You really can't go wrong with any of the 3 you mentioned. It's up to what you prefer at this point.

Maybe. Around here, I guarantee you that a three year old Ford will have lost more of its value than a three year old Honda or Toyota. I'm not a salesman but do tend to follow the used car market. It's cool that Ford is making up lost ground there.

I don't have anything against Fords and am not a fanboy of any brand (currently own two Chevys, a Honda and a Suzuki). I also don't usually care about resale since we tend to keep our cars a long time but a lower resale value can kill you if your car gets totalled down the line and you have to replace it.

The British Steam Car is an almost $1 Million dollar attempt to break a 103 year old land speed record for steam powered vehicles. That 1906 record was an incredible 127 mph, in a Stanley Steamer. (No, not the carpet cleaners!) The British Steam car team hopes to better this record by reaching a speed of 170 mph.
After rigorous testing in the UK, the team will be shipping the car to the U.S. They are planning to use the dry lake bed at Edwards Air Force Base, where the Shuttle sometimes lands. Although, word is Edwards has had a wetter than normal winter, so the bed may need to dry out. Where’s global warming when we need it?
http://properautocare.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/steam-car-schematic.jpg
The Steam Car is a mixture of carbon-fiber composite and aluminum over a steel space frame chassis. Internally, it carries 12 boilers, and has almost 2 miles of tubing. De-mineralized water is pumped into the boilers at upwards of 50 liters a minute.
The steam is heated to 400 degress Celsius. This can be accomplished because the water is under extreme pressure. The resulting steam is injected into turbines at over twice the speed of sound. The turbines drive the rear wheels.
Even with the carbon-fiber and aluminum, this vehicle still tips the scales at 3 tons.
Check out the video below of a test run in the UK. The Steam Car may only have achieved a speed in this run of approximately 60 mph, but remember, it’s running on steam!

Does it have a timing belt?
I know the Toyota 22R and RE engines use a timing chain, which actually has it's own set of issues cropping up when the tensioner goes sloppy and allows the chain to slap.
I know ours has one, and it's due to be replaced. I'm just wondering how badly I'm going to get bent over for it. That's really the only thing that irritates me about these Toyotas and Hondas, the timing belt is considered 'routine maintenance'.

Jfc you're that annoying ass family on those Toyota commercials rightNope.

I just have had exceptional luck with all of the Toyota's I've owned. You might try one before you get too overly excited. They are very good cars, plus they get great gas mileage.

The 4-cyls do, but the V6 we have now can get to slurping some gas.

Ours were changed at 120,000 miles. kinda costly but we did the full blown maintenance each time we did it. Oil changes and regular checks were worth the overall mileage we have gotten.

I haven't done any V6's. Initial cost was too high for my budget. I don't need power, I just need to get from home to work and back. 112 miles one way.

120K? Ours is recommended at 90K? I'd love to put it off for a while but this particular engine is one that self destructs if it goes.

Our old one had the base 4 cyl, and it was a dog, it didn't even have adequate power to merge on the freeway. The one we have now is just the opposite, it's a freaking rocket. Way more power than we need. We probably should've tried to find one with a 16 valve 4cyl, one of my friends has one of those and it's much more tame.

I never had a problem with the 4's with acceleration, but maybe the freeways in Oklahoma don't require as much punch as you may need. I can't complain. As for the timing belt, they checked it at 90k but we were doing OK.

If I still had access to my old 2000 I'd still trust it on the highway. Traded it for a pickup. Probably should have kept it and given it to someone that needed a car that didn't have the funds to get one. I think it was going to be good for another 100K.

I'd go with the Accord based off of history. Ford can claim the resale value and reliablity are equal or better, but the history isn't there to support the claims.

Ford is currently the only American car (I use that term loosely) I'd buy though. I currently own a 04 Accord (53K) and we've never had any issues with it at all.

I saw some of the programs that controls some of the equipment that assembles portions of the Caddy. If I were you and it is newer than 2006, I'd be worried, very worried. The robot programs dropped welds on a regular basis.

My Camry's have been very comfortable rides.

Every person has their preference, I'm not that into the big car experience.

If you end up going the Ford route and live in the KC area, I'd highly recommend price checking at Thoroughbred Ford. Just bought my wife a '10 Ford Edge 6 months ago and they came off sticker $4K more than any other dealership we looked at...including SM Ford, Olathe Ford, and Bob Sight Ford (those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head). Good luck and happy new car shopping.

I am in no way trying to justify anything about a Honda or Toyota, but any car with an overhead cam is going to have the timing belt issues.

The 3.5 Chrysler v6, that I had in my previous two cars, you had better do a timing belt at about 75,000 or you could be in for some serious problems. When it goes, it is an interference (bent valves) catastrophe, much like the Hondas.

I would really look into the warranty. I have heard horror stories that its not all cracked up to what they actually cover.
