DENVER -- Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway is expected to become a lead executive in the Denver Broncos' front office by the end of this season, according to league sources who talked to ESPN Sunday.

"I'd be very surprised if it didn’t happen," a person with direct knowledge of the situation told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Hours after Broncos' owner Pat Bowlen fired Josh McDaniels last week, he was seen eating dinner with John Elway.

Elway is likely to join the front office in a position with broad personnel powers, working closely with COO Joe Ellis as team owner Pat Bowlen’s two most trusted men, ESPN reported.

Elway already is working as a consultant and adviser to Bowlen.

General manager Brian Xanders would keep his job, but with altered responsibilities, according to Schefter.

Elway will have say in who the Broncos hire as head coach.

7SPORTS has learned the Broncos would be very interested in Gary Kubiak, currently the head coach of the Houston Texans. Kubiak is a former back-up quarterback to Elway and offensive coordinator under Mike Shanahan.

Watch 7SPORTS Sunday for the latest on this story.

Football star John Elway's stolen truck recovered in Idaho

By the Associated Press | Posted: Thursday, September 4, 2003 11:00 pm

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) — Sheriff's deputies have recovered former Denver quarterback John Elway's stolen sport utility vehicle.

The white 2000 Ford Expedition — Elway's prize for being named most valuable player of the 1999 Super Bowl — was stolen from the Coeur d'Alene airport in late August.

It was found Thursday afternoon at another location on the airport grounds, the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department said.

There was no damage to the $35,700 vehicle and

nothing was missing, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies speculated the vehicle might have been taken for a joy ride from Elway's jet hanger and left on the other side of the airport.

‘‘Pending any further leads, the case will be inactivated at this time,'' the sheriff's office said.

Elway, who has a vacation home on Lake Coeur d'Alene, and his employees used the vehicle.

It was stolen sometime between Aug. 23 and Aug. 24, after pilot Sid Jelsma left it inside a fence that surrounds the hanger and flew out, according to the theft report.

The keys were inside the unlocked truck because it was assumed thieves could not reach it, the report said.

But the thief apparently scaled the fence and drove the truck away, because the fence gate opens automatically from the inside, according to the report.

The vehicle contains no special markings indicating it belongs to Elway.

Broncos tap Elway as VP, sources say

ESPN.com news services

The Denver Broncos and John Elway have reached an agreement for the two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback to join the team's front office this week as an executive vice president, team sources have told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

"John's intelligence, his leadership, business savvy, his knowledge of the game, and competitive fire -- plus the respect that everyone in this building will have for him -- will make us better right away," Joe Ellis, the Broncos' chief operating officer, told The Denver Post of owner Pat Bowlen's sentiments, without confirming Elway's hire.

AFC West blog

Williamson ESPN.com's Bill Williamson writes about all things AFC West in his division blog.

• Blog network: NFL Nation

One of Elway's first orders of business as a Broncos executive will be to discuss Denver's head-coach opening with Stanford's Jim Harbaugh, league sources told Schefter. A former Stanford star, Elway is serving as an honorary captain for the Cardinal on Monday night at the Discover Orange Bowl against Virginia Tech.

The Broncos were expected to hold a news conference midweek to announce Elway's hiring as VP of football operations, according to The Denver Post.

Speaking on his radio talk show in Denver on Friday, Elway said there were still contractual points to be settled, and that he still loved "the game of football."

"That's what I'm excited about," Elway said on Denver's 87.7 FM The Ticket, according to the Denver newspaper. "The game is something that's in my blood. It's been there forever. I got involved in the Arena League because I wanted to be close to football and learn that front-office side. It was a great learning experience for me. It got me a chance to be close to the game, even though it was obviously a very different game at a different level.

"The competitive side of it is definitely the lure."

The Broncos first approached Elway about a front-office role early last month, before Denver fired coach Josh McDaniels. Elway has been inching his way into the position since last offseason, when he signed a five-year consulting/marketing deal with the Broncos, league sources have told Schefter.

"I've been around John a long time, and there's nothing he can't do," Bubby Brister, Elway's backup quarterback in their championship seasons of 1997-98, told The Post. "They couldn't have picked a better person. He can evaluate. He knows football, he knows people. He's been in the business world and knows that. I felt like when he got out of football, he should have gone right back in there. He could have helped Mike [Shanahan]. Heck, he is the Denver Broncos. He can handle it."

Where does that say that Denver is the front runner?

Well he is Harbaugh's honorary captain for their bowl game. You need to read between the lines here.

You really need to take a leave of absence and evaluate yourself ...

Read between the lines?

This is what I read.

Joh Elway is a legendary Stanford QB that is being honored by Stanford in a Bowl game.

Cannot wait to watch this clusterfuck firsthand for the next few seasons. This has Matt Millen 2.0 written all over it.

Hopefully I can finally get my seats out of the upper deck when this is all over with.

Really nice to hear that Denver is probably the front runner for the hottest HC on the market in Harbaugh. That just proves that Denver's HC job IS STILL one of the most desirable jobs in all of sports.

Wow

Longtime NFL exec Ernie Accorsi said he was reminded of Ozzie Newsome’s transition from player to the front office in 1990 while recently working with John Elway. “John doesn’t underestimate the job. He knows he has to learn the intricate parts of it. That’s why I think he’ll be successful,” Accorsi said.

Longtime NFL GM Ernie Accorsi, a recent adviser to the team, was impressed by John Elway’s feel and instincts, despite a lack of NFL front-office experience. Accorsi said it was obvious Elway asked questions and was a keen observer during his playing days.

Executive VP John Elway has often said that "he knows what he doesn't know." That struck a chord with Ernie Accorsi, who spoke with Elway often during his first few weeks on the job. "That really impressed me. Because when somebody says that, you know they're trying to learn."

Really nice to hear your GM being compared to Ozzie Newsome. :)

He never worked for the Broncos. He was actually the Colts GM when Elway came out and quit after the Colts traded Elway. After that he was Marty's GM in Cleveland and he was also the Giants GM.

KnowMo... You realize that Xanders is the GM right? I realize you may only have read half the press release or turned off the press conference halfway through though.

Elway isn't the Broncos GM, genius. And Newsome is a great GM. Him and Elway shouldn't be mentioned in the sentence.
