Mickey Pfleger, the Green Bay native photographer who was on the receiving end of a famous sideline hit in 2000, has died.

Pfleger was knocked unconscious after Kansas City Chiefs star Tony Gonzalez was pushed out of bounds and couldn't stop in a game in San Francisco.

Tests revealed Pfleger had a brain tumor.

"I was in a state of shock," he said in 2002, when "Dateline NBC" featured his story and his philosophical nature. "I had absolutely no symptoms."

Pfleger died Dec. 10 in an acute care facility in the Sacramento area. He was 61.

He had health problems because of the brain tumor, said his brother, Lawrence Pfleger, of Clear Lake, Minn.

At the time of the hit, Mickey Pfleger was freelancing for Sports Illustrated and Time magazines.

Services will be held in January in San Francisco, reports a friend Brad Mangin, who publishes an online magazine, Sports Shooter.com.

Pfleger is survived by a son and daughter.

That was always one of the cooler stories (not that he had cancer, but that the hit helped them find it).

RIP

Rumor has it that Tony G was asked to knock him unconscious every year as a followup, but refused.

Good point. Zach, for your own good you really should consider getting knocked out by Tony Gonzalez.
