Most people probably don't know who he is. He's one of those figures in music and the arts that revolutionized the form in closed academic circles, but the success of his compositions reached mainstream in the 60s and 70s. His writing revolutionized electronic music, and I would suspect a lot of music groups today have him to thank for their sound.

It's a great article that remembers him. I would invite you to check it out if you're unfamiliar with Babbitt.

I got to meet Babbitt about 10 years ago when I was still in college. My advisor was a pupil of his at Princeton. Babbitt had so much energy and life for an 84 year old that you couldn't help but smile the entire time you were talking to him. Extraordinarily friendly guy who seemed to take pleasure in talking to his critics more than his admirers.

Music lost a great man today.
