Spam Infestation (Newly-Registered Users, Please Read)

From what I can tell, re-CAPTCHA (the human verification system we use for new users) has been cracked. Translating that for non-techies, spam-bots have been registering and spamming stuff all over the place. There are literally hundreds over a thousand new users registered in the past week, and we've been killing spammers left and right.

It's going to take some time to 1) clean all the crap out and 2) figure out how to keep them out in the future, so for the short-term, NEW USER REGISTRATIONS ARE MODERATED. You'll be able to register, but we will have to manually approve new users, so there might be a delay before you'll get your "approval" email.

Also, there may be some causalities of newly-registered users who haven't posted yet while we're pruning off some of the spam accounts. If you find your account gets deleted, please just try to re-register. To be safe, feel free to send an email to the mods using the "Contact Us" link at the bottom to make sure we approve your account.

And now back to your regularly-scheduled programming...

I've now dumped a TON of users with little or no posts - mostly those who either registered in 2011 or haven't been active in over a year. If you happen to be a real lurker who got dumped, I assure you it wasn't personal. Just sign up for a new account. You'll be able to use the same email address you signed up with before.

For now, normal registration (non-moderated) is back on, and I've changed from the CAPTCHA to a Q&A.

Well, the problem is that you can't just disapprove of everyone. You have to check their email address to see if it's from Russia. Then check the IP to see if it's a dupe of some sort. Then you can decide whether to approve or disapprove. It's a pain.

They don't even need to be Chiefs related, necessarily. It'd be nice to have maybe 10 different questions that get asked. The main thing is that a computer shouldn't be able to answer it.

Man...I feel like I just gave the server a giant colon cleanse. I dumped basically anyone who has joined since January 1st and hadn't posted, so that should take care of most of them. I might have gotten a real user in there somewhere, but hopefully they'll see this message and re-register.

I might've gotten a little carried away with myself, but I also got rid of anyone who hadn't logged in for a year or more and had 0 posts. Then, I dumped any banned user who had fewer than 5 posts (since they were probably spammers or pure trolls anyway). In total, I probably dumped around 5,000 users - maybe more.

Anyway, I THINK that we'll be OK from a new registration standpoint now, but there's still a good chance that some of those old accounts might still be open. So, please continue to report spam posts so that we can make sure we get 'em all.
