Not going to try to define what is "Rock and Roll". What makes the song the "Greatest" Rock and Roll song of all time is for you to decide. But you only get one nomination.

Mine .........Rock and Roll by Led Zepplin.

Since there are way too many definitions and subtle categories, I'll go old-school. Without this song, and others of the time by people like Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis, there IS no rock-and-roll.

One of the most difficult questions of all times. There is no "greatest" song of all times. But, I have a few all time favorites.

1. All Along the Watchtower
2. July Morning or Baba O'Riley (this is definite tie).
3. Solsbury Hill.
4. Hey Jude or A Day In the Life or Strawberry Fields or any other Beatles record.
5. Won't Get Fooled Again.
6. Respect or Sympathy For The Devil. (another tie).

Anywho, in the spirit of the thread, it's impossible to narrow it down to just one. Hell, I'd be hard pressed to even come up with my own top 10 favorites.

But Clapton definitely needs to represented, so I'll go with this:

Not a song, but the greatest moment in rock and roll history was the release of two consecutive Dylan albums: Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde.

Nothing beats it. The only thing better in modern music history is Dylan's Blood on the Tracks album.

My observation is this; lots of times I will dial up a music video deal on youtube like say, maybe an old Doors tune or maybe an old Credence song or maybe an old Deep Purple number or CSNY piece or something. Almost without fail, some apparently teenage person will leave a comment to the effect that the old music kicks the new music's ass right out the window.

I just think that's interesting.

If American Pie counts as rock, you nailed it. Best song ever.

If I had to pick 30 rock songs to listen to for the rest of my life, I'd go with the following. I will define "rock" as a song that meets at least two of the four criteria below:

1. Fast beat recognizable as rock
2. Involves an electric guitar
3. Is sung by a person/group normally associated with rock music
4. References rock and roll

1. American Pie, Don McLean
2. Jungleland, Bruce Springsteen
3. Runnin' Down a Dream, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
4. Cadillac Ranch, Bruce Springsteen
5. Piano Man, Billy Joel
6. Tiny Dancer, Elton John (or Ben Folds)
7. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, the Beatles
8. Good Riddance, Green Day
9. Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen
10. Johnny B. Goode, Chuck Berry
11. Walk Like an Egyptian, the Bangles
12. The World's On Fire, The Housemartins
13. I Love Rock and Roll, Joan Jett
14. Point of Know Return, Kansas
15. Rocket Man, Elton John
16. Paradise by the Dashboard Light, Meat Loaf
17. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, U2
18. Come Sail Away, Styx
19. Youngstown, Bruce Springsteen
20. Landslide, Fleetwood Mac
21. Thunder Road, Bruce Springsteen
22. Romeo and Juliet, Indigo Girls' remake of Dire Straits song
23. Son of a Preacher Man, Dusty Springfield
24. Life's Been Good, Joe Walsh
25. Working on the Highway, Bruce Springsteen
26. Hey There Delilah, Plain White T's
27. Dust in the Wind, Kansas
28. Red Cadillac and a Black Moustache, Warren Smith
29. Ramrod, Bruce Springsteen
30. It's the End of the World, REM

#8, #23, and #26 may not fit the definition, but I'm not sure so I included them. Note that these are not the 30 SONGS I'd listen to, but are the 30 Rock songs. Otherwise, I'd have some Fogelburg and Simon and Garfunkel and Kim Richey and probably some others on the list.

Fair enough, Mr. Pitt Gorilla. Still, I'm not imagining things. If you cruise around youtube and check out some '60s era music, you almost always encounter a comment made by someone identifying themselves as a "teenager" who states that the "old" stuff is preferable to the "new" stuff.

Where there's smoke, there's fire.

FAXThis phenomenon, or at least a corollary, was discussed on here recently. Here is the gist of thesis: For the most part, only the best of the "old" stuff survives (on classic radio, youtube, etc.) while we get "all" of the new stuff (including the crap). There is outstanding new music out there right now, but one may have to get off one's ass to find it; your youtube kids likely aren't aware or sophisticated enough to even know where to begin looking.

If American Pie counts as rock, you nailed it. Best song ever.

If I had to pick 30 rock songs to listen to for the rest of my life, I'd go with the following. I will define "rock" as a song that meets at least two of the four criteria below:

1. Fast beat recognizable as rock
2. Involves an electric guitar
3. Is sung by a person/group normally associated with rock music
4. References rock and roll

1. American Pie, Don McLean
2. Jungleland, Bruce Springsteen
3. Runnin' Down a Dream, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
4. Cadillac Ranch, Bruce Springsteen
5. Piano Man, Billy Joel
6. Tiny Dancer, Elton John (or Ben Folds)
7. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, the Beatles
8. Good Riddance, Green Day
9. Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen
10. Johnny B. Goode, Chuck Berry
11. Walk Like an Egyptian, the Bangles
12. The World's On Fire, The Housemartins
13. I Love Rock and Roll, Joan Jett
14. Point of Know Return, Kansas
15. Rocket Man, Elton John
16. Paradise by the Dashboard Light, Meat Loaf
17. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, U2
18. Come Sail Away, Styx
19. Youngstown, Bruce Springsteen
20. Landslide, Fleetwood Mac
21. Thunder Road, Bruce Springsteen
22. Romeo and Juliet, Indigo Girls' remake of Dire Straits song
23. Son of a Preacher Man, Dusty Springfield
24. Life's Been Good, Joe Walsh
25. Working on the Highway, Bruce Springsteen
26. Hey There Delilah, Plain White T's
27. Dust in the Wind, Kansas
28. Red Cadillac and a Black Moustache, Warren Smith
29. Ramrod, Bruce Springsteen
30. It's the End of the World, REM

#8, #23, and #26 may not fit the definition, but I'm not sure so I included them. Note that these are not the 30 SONGS I'd listen to, but are the 30 Rock songs. Otherwise, I'd have some Fogelburg and Simon and Garfunkel and Kim Richey and probably some others on the list.

That's a very solid list there, Kev. And had I known Greenday counted as borderline rock n roll, I'd have included Macy's Day Parade, from the same album I believe, in my top five. Instead, I knocked it off and had four. And I really love Life's Been Good, by Joe Walsh. It's up there on my list. Great fucking song.

They have a bunch of great songs. We Will Rock You and Bohemian Rhapsody jump out immediately, but they have other lesser-known ones that are really good - '39, Keep Yourself Alive, and Don't Stop Me Now are all awesome songs. I really like Keep Yourself Alive, and maybe it should've made my Top 30 list.

Okay. I misinterpreted your statement as implying irritation. My bad.

I'm all ears, though. I'd like to know about some of this awesome, new music.

To be perfectly honest with you, I spend most of my "music" time sequestered and creating my own. I don't reach out as I probably should in terms of staying abreast of what new, good music is out there. I can no longer listen to radio, because it sucks and my musician friends are all doing what I do ... making their own stuff.

Thinking about it, the last really good piece of relatively new music that struck a chord with me was Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life". That, I liked. Very much. However, that was released quite a while ago.

Got more? I would sincerely appreciate some guidance.

I've been finding some new stuff I really like, such as Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, Mumford and Sons, and the Avett Brothers, but I don't think any of those are rock.

I'm a big Ben Folds fan and a couple of his songs might have made my Top 30 list, but I decided that I should let them season a little and be sure that they're really in my Top 30. I think they will be, but I didn't include him precisely because he was contemporary. Maybe others are doing the same with their own current singers.

If you were playing this in your house and your parents heard it, it scared the crap out of them and had them thinking about getting you into therapy.

I had a toss up between Paranoid and this next song. I went with this since it doesn't get a lot of play time but rocks just as hard.

23. Son of a Preacher Man, Dusty Springfield
26. Hey There Delilah, Plain White T's
27. Dust in the Wind, Kansas

This one references rock in the song. I think it's rock, but not traditional rock by any means. I could see tossing it out.

1. American Pie, Don McLean

As psychotek mentioned, these are more power ballads. I would think that's rock. What do other people think?

2. Jungleland, Bruce Springsteen
17. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, U2

I can't imagine these NOT being classified as rock.

3. Runnin' Down a Dream, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
7. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, the Beatles
10. Johnny B. Goode, Chuck Berry
11. Walk Like an Egyptian, the Bangles
13. I Love Rock and Roll, Joan Jett
15. Rocket Man, Elton John

Cheap Trick ... Great lead singer. Weird guitar player. Featured a base guitar with 800 strings or something. "Ain't That A Shame", "I Want You to Want Me", "Surrender", "Dream Police".

Good American band. Has a beat. You can dance to it.

Philosophical question: is there a difference between the definition of "rock music" and "rock and roll music"? I always kind of assumed they were the same thing, but the more I think about it, one could make an argument that rock is an umbrella category and rock and roll is a subset within it.

As a concrete example, I would view Billy Joel's Piano Man as rock music, but it's not really rock and roll.

But it's called "I Love Rock and Roll". The words "Rock and Roll" make up something like 20 percent of the lyrics. It's got an assaulting guitar intro. How is this not rock and roll?

There are a lot of great nominations in this thread. The first song that came to mind for me was American Pie, but since that's already been mentioned, I'll nominate two from bands that haven't been mentioned. Like American Pie, both of these songs are rock and roll songs about rock and roll (more or less):

If we're talking one song that embodies rock and roll, it has to be a Zeppelin song. The right blend of rythm, blues (the precursor to rock), and sex...

I'll go with "Black Dog".

If I had to explain "Rock and Roll" to somebody who's never heard it before, I would start with that song.

Your friend,

1. Fast beat recognizable as rock
2. Involves an electric guitar
3. Is sung by a person/group normally associated with rock music
4. References rock and roll

1) Bob Dylan - Desolation Row
2) Bob Dylan - It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry
3) Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone
4) Bob Dylan - Shelter from the Storm
5) Bob Dylan - Buckets of Rain

I love me some ac/dc. Just because it's basic 3 cord riffs doesn't mean it's still not some trimming great rock and roll.

I agree pretty simple rock, especially to listen but if you try to play it and play it right, especially the rhythm section, not so easy.

You can play AC/DC but playing it right especially the early stuff isn't as easy as it sounds. I know from experience as well as many pretty good musicians I know who got together to do it, we all realized, it's harder than they make it sound like.

Interesting when you dig into it. I was surprised.

If American Pie counts as rock, you nailed it. Best song ever.

If I had to pick 30 rock songs to listen to for the rest of my life, I'd go with the following. I will define "rock" as a song that meets at least two of the four criteria below:

1. Fast beat recognizable as rock
2. Involves an electric guitar
3. Is sung by a person/group normally associated with rock music
4. References rock and roll

1. American Pie, Don McLean
2. Jungleland, Bruce Springsteen
3. Runnin' Down a Dream, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
4. Cadillac Ranch, Bruce Springsteen
5. Piano Man, Billy Joel
6. Tiny Dancer, Elton John (or Ben Folds)
7. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, the Beatles
8. Good Riddance, Green Day
9. Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen
10. Johnny B. Goode, Chuck Berry
11. Walk Like an Egyptian, the Bangles
12. The World's On Fire, The Housemartins
13. I Love Rock and Roll, Joan Jett
14. Point of Know Return, Kansas
15. Rocket Man, Elton John
16. Paradise by the Dashboard Light, Meat Loaf
17. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, U2
18. Come Sail Away, Styx
19. Youngstown, Bruce Springsteen
20. Landslide, Fleetwood Mac
21. Thunder Road, Bruce Springsteen
22. Romeo and Juliet, Indigo Girls' remake of Dire Straits song
23. Son of a Preacher Man, Dusty Springfield
24. Life's Been Good, Joe Walsh
25. Working on the Highway, Bruce Springsteen
26. Hey There Delilah, Plain White T's
27. Dust in the Wind, Kansas
28. Red Cadillac and a Black Moustache, Warren Smith
29. Ramrod, Bruce Springsteen
30. It's the End of the World, REM

#8, #23, and #26 may not fit the definition, but I'm not sure so I included them. Note that these are not the 30 SONGS I'd listen to, but are the 30 Rock songs. Otherwise, I'd have some Fogelburg and Simon and Garfunkel and Kim Richey and probably some others on the list.

Tiny Dancer?

Tiny Dancer?

Dunno why this made me think of it [probably the notion of easy-listening/pop finding its way onto a list of greatest rock and roll], but back in Boy Scouts, a couple of the 'cool kids'came up with a great derogatory term that encapsulates the same mix of lame and emasculated that 'pillowbitergot' gives us so much trouble for, without the gay connotations.

In the same way you sneeringly say pbgot, you tell a group of lame-os, that they're a bunch of Fleetwood Macs.

Too much Springsteen.....he isn't even close to being the best.

You, my friend, have not climbed the mountain of Springsteen and listened to the master.

If the answer is Tiny Dancer, I must have misunderstood the question. :)

Cuz of this, I hope you put We Will Rock You in one of your heats. You can put any of those songs in the battle of the greatest rock song.
