The Colombian military has nabbed a sophisticated, 100-foot long submarine capable of transporting eight tons of cocaine to the coast of Mexico, authorities said Monday.

The fiberglass sub, which was seized in a jungle in Timbiqui, near the Colombia's southwestern Pacific coast, could carry a crew of four to six people, had two diesel engines and navigational equipment allowing it to remain fully submerged up to 30 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, navy officials said.

It also had a 16 ½ foot periscope and an air-conditioner to keep the crew cool during the trip. Authorities estimated it cost about $2 million to build.

The vessel was a step up technologically from previous narcosubs found in Colombia, which could not operate completely underwater.

" Hi I'd like to buy a submarine. I'm also paying in $10 bills thanks"

It looked fairly rudimentary. But, it wouldn't really need to make more than 1 or 2 voyages to justify the expense.

Awesome.

Someday i'm gonna buy one of those and travel through the missouri river catching catfish and skinning them alive just for the fun of it.

8 Tons of Coke probably has a street value of $250MM. My guess is that a $2MM Sub is pittance in the grand scheme of things.

It reminds me of the South Park episode when the Mexican dudes build the boys a rocket ship for like $50.

It pays to be an Estevez.

So did they really build it? It seems like it'd be easier to buy an off-the-shelf model from the North Koreans.

It was a kit they got from the back pages of Popular Science.

Parts made in China instead of that cheap crap from N. Korea.

At one time, Popular Mechanics did advertise a submarine kit. I can't remember much about it, although the plans alone were about 10 dollars, I think.

If memory serves, I think the kit cost about 7 grand but it didn't come with an engine or a motor. You had to purchase that separately and they recommended some kind of propane-fueled engine. The kit included some kind of electrolysis system to generate oxygen for breathing. Pretty cool, actually, and I always wanted one.

I think every red blooded kid with a dream wanted something like that. Or the plans to make a hovercraft with a standard vacum cleaner motor.

This got me thinking about kits and that got me thinking about car kits and that got me thinking about whether or not they make a car kit that fits on a '97 Corolla chassis.

It would be awesome if I could convert my $100 car in to a Lambo or a Ferrari or something like that.

Can you make a video of that and post it on the internet somewhere?

I built a submarine when I was a boy. Unfortunately, I neglected to include a method of making it positively buoyant once submerged.

You would think that they would have invested in a high grade camo net to at least attempt to hide it. :)

With all that coke they didn't even need the engine. Just some bicycle pedals with a chain going to a boat prop.

I like that alibi strategy.
