SURPRISE, Ariz. -- There is a long and storied history to baseball nicknames, from Ted Williams (the Splendid Splinter) to Randy Johnson (the Big Unit) to Babe Ruth (the Sultan of Swat).
Kansas City closer Joakim Soria has a nickname he wants no part of.
The Royals pitcher said that "The Mexicutioner" has a negative connotation and is a particularly jarring choice given the drug violence racking his homeland. He is from Monclova in the northern state of Coahuila.
"It's been really bad in Mexico right now," Soria said Wednesday. "There are a lot of guns in Mexico. It's out of control right now.

I don't even know who he is but I'm going to find him and call him the Mexicutioner because I hate it when people complain that perfectly reasonable words are politically incorrect. I might even buy a Mexicutioner tee-shirt.

I dont think he's getting another nickname anytime soon. If he wants us to quit using mexicutioner, fine we'll probably reluctantly comply, but baseball nicknames aren't that common. Sometimes people try to weld a nickname onto a player, but its usually not going to stick. Baseball nicknames usually just happen unexpectedly, its like going viral. Lots of people try, but you cant reliably predict which youtube video will get 30 million hits.

I also believe I heard that the 20 year old female police chief that many of you talked about on here was abducted recently and nobody has seen her since that time. Joakim says he requests this change because of the negative connotations it would carry with the children within Mexico, and after briefly examining the sheer amount of violence found there, I am definitely willing to comply.

I also believe I heard that the 20 year old female police chief that many of you talked about on here was abducted recently and nobody has seen her since that time. Yeah, normally I have an extremely thick skin and I think this sort of thing is silly knee-jerk political correctness, but not this time. I'll be sad to see the nickname go because "mexicutioner" is pretty good, but I absolutely understand.
The violence in northern Mexico is God-damn insane. The mexican drug cartels are some of the closest things that modern man has ever come to pure industrial-strength cold black-hearted "evil", in that they think nothing about, not just killing, but publicly hacking people apart and hanging or strewing body parts around the street in a bloodthirsty psychopathic message to everyone else in the town of "don't get in our f***ing way, we're making money and your life means nothing to us if you threaten our illegal profits". I even read a story about how they murdered this big group of mexicans who were going to some sort of drug therapy program to kick their drug habits, as if "you want to quit buying drugs from us? Oh screw that, you are all dead!"
The violence in mexico is jaw-droppingly mind-numbing insane, and no one should know that better than Joakim Soria. So given all that hellish background, if he doesn't want me to call him "mexicutioner", I'll quickly back the hell down and call him "Joakim Soria" unless a better nickname comes along.

It's been obvious for a long time that he's playing hurt. He's a guy who has tried to play through pain before, too. His new cutter that he's obsessed with isn't helping matters one bit, though. Just speculation, but that cutter might even be the reason he's hurt. I don't know why the organization gave the OK on him learning a cutter.

Why does everybody keep saying that? I know being hurt doesn't always translate to velocity, but he's not losing velocity. I've been to 2 of the last 6 home games and he pitched in both. He was throwing 92-95 consistently.

Looking at his Pitch FX data this season, there is no doubt that Soria is broken.
The question is whether or not he can come back from this - without seeing Dr. Andrews and going through surgery.
Unfortunately I am not overly optimistic.

Which is reasonable considering this is the last guaranteed year of his contract. We have team options each year beyond this one.
