Like in the Rock thread, whatever you consider to be hip-hop is eligible. One nomination per. And if you don't like rap, I literally could not care less, so shut the fuck up and leave this thread right now.

Starting the nominations off strong:

rules are made to be broken ;)

Too many songs IMO to limit to one per.

If everyone was interested I could see the limit. But I think the turnout may be low to not get a good sampling for 1 per.

But I'll submit (if not there already):

Beastie Boys are good. Paul's Boutique is a great hip hop album. Not good, but great. I don't know if I'd say any of the tracks are "best hip hop song of all time" good, though. The whole thing is almost one whole piece together.
I read (I think in Rolling Stone) that listening to it is like taking a tour of New York City, and I think that describes it well. I also read Rakim say he could make 5 albums with the samples they used on Paul's Boutique. Shadrach might be the best song on the album.

I know someone else posted the Walk This Way remake by Run DMC, but even though that was good at the time I think of it more as a schticky kind of thing. If I were to nominate a Run DMC song it would be King of Rock. The line "And I even made the devil sell me his soul" is one of the all timers.

Madvillainy is one of my favorite albums ever, but I don't know if I could choose one particular track as the best. The album kind of feels like one unit of music rather than a collection of tracks or singles (the way most hip-hop seems to be these days).

My favorite individual track involving DOOM is Old School featuring Talib Kweli:

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/zNK7WO7_lDA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And Madvillain's most recent track is pretty catchy:

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_Kmd9SxV6A8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Not sure when the hell the whole album is going to come out. Hope it doesn't become another Detox.

Always my favorite song growing up. Great message in it, like a good amount of 2Pac's music.. That's the reason I'd give him the edge over Biggie. Biggie was all money, hoes and clothes; Pac was all that but had a message in a lot of his songs too. He was a poet.

Yes, Pac was more of an artist. Also, when you look at their catalogs, Pac was vastly more profilic and had a change over the course. Going from 2Pacalypse Now through Makavelli, you see a huge shift in his music.

That being said, Me Against the World is his best album

and if I haven't posted it then shame on me but this should be nominated too

The alliteration in here is sick "they say pussy and paper is poetry power and pistols/plottin on murder mothafuckas before they get ya/ picturing pitiful punk niggas coppin pleas/ puffin weed while position myself to make g's"

His lyrics were deeper, I agree, but I think Biggie was a better MC, just in terms of mic skill and flow.

I was going to nominate that, Native, but I felt bad about more than one. At this point, though, I don't know if there's ever a poll actually coming or not, so I don't know if it matters.

I was also thinking of "Slow Down" by Brand Nubian or "Just Rhymin with the Biz" with Biz Markie and Big Daddy Kane. Kane's part on that song is maybe my favorite MCing of all time, and you hear pieces of it sampled on various other tracks.

You'l get no argument from me there. I've not heard anyone with better flow or story-telling ability than Biggie. Personally, I would just take Pac over Biggie (sooo sooo slightly) because of the his energy and deeper meaning.

I know what you mean. I think one thing that sort of hurts Biggie's legacy is that there seemed to be tons of guys trying to copy his act for years and the whole thing sort of took on a, "Oh, another rap about rims and Cristal and Bentleys," feel for me. But I love him as an MC, and Tupac. Both great.

I mentioned Rapper's Delight... and historically I do think it might be the most important of all time.

Best as far as greatest, most iconic, personal favorite... yeah, I'd go with "Nuthin' but a G Thang". Everyone who was even remotely interested knows every word of that song by heart.
