There have been signs early in the offseason that Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer doesn't want to return to the team for a ninth season, starting with his decision to put his Cincinnati-area house up for sale.
The latest salvo comes from WCPO-TV, which reports Palmer telling friends that his plan is to "never set foot in Paul Brown Stadium again."
Carson Palmer says he will retire rather than play for the Bengals again. (AP Photo)Palmer went on to say how his financial security -- he says he has $80 million in the bank -- gives him leverage to force a trade because he doesn't have to play football and simply could make good on his threat to retire if not traded.
The Bengals already are acting as if Palmer won't be back. Coach Marvin Lewis, new offensive coordinator Jay Gruden and owner/G.M. Mike Brown spent many of their 15-minute interview slots at the NFL Scouting Combine talking to quarterbacks. The team is expected to seriously consider drafting Auburn's Cam Newton or Missouri's Blaine Gabbert with the fourth-overall pick April 28.
Palmer is under contract with Cincinnati through 2014, but team officials aren't allowed to trade him until after the CBA impasse is solved.
