The time for the first annual Alternate CP Mock Draft is upon us!

The rules here are essentially the same as in the other mock. You've got 24 hours to complete your pick, or the next owner is allowed to go. For any reason you think you might miss your pick, let me or Rams Fan know via pm with a list of players you'd like pending they're available.

When you select a player, please list name, position, school of the player in that format to make updating the header easier.

We're hoping to get this thing through all seven rounds! So get ready to blow those other guys out of the water with our first Alternate Draft!

Might help to post the draft order in the OP.

I was working on it. I just wanted to go ahead and get it up there.

Actually at first I was looking on the front page to see if you were on and if you'd do it. If you wanna get the order of the 2nd round and send it to me, that'd be awesome whenever you get a chance.

Shogun, PM Sportsshrink.

I already dropped a duece on his wall, but apparently, he may not take me seriously because I joke around too much.

And good pick, Shogun. I would've gone the Gabbert route, but whatever.

Why Fairley after the lackluster combine, though?

Shogun
03-05-2011, 12:18 PM
Eh, I won't put TOO much stock into that.

I've seen Fairley play, he is aggressive, mean, he is what Carolina needs, they need a mean player on Defense to fire all of them up and make them want to bring it every game, I think they need him.

Also, Players like Fairley are built for football, not a formal combine. We have seen him play shut out all game throughout a ton of games, we've only seen him in 1 combine. I'm taking the player I've seen perform well IN game. I don't like the combine.

Agreed. That's really the downfall of the combine in my opinion. Sure, certain things may stand out to you at the combine for certain players, but overall you just can't put too much stock into it. Nice pick by the way. I perhaps might have gone with Fairley as well with that pick. Though I can't say for certain since I did't have it.

As Pestilence said, it is easier to find the picks when you bold them and make the pick with all pertinent info with it...like this:

DaQuan Bowers, DE, Clemson

Some even choose to include a youtube video of said player so people that havent seen him before can get an idea of what kind of player you have selected.

Um, let's just say that if I were managing this mock draft I would have sent 'everyone' participating a PM just to make sure everyone knows what day and time this starts. I received nothing until today.

The last message I got from RamsFan was that this so-called mock was to be picked just before the actual draft and I assumed the teams that we all picked, we were to study until then to make the best picks for our teams.

Communication gets a D-

Good pick sportsshrink! Why Bowers iyo?

Bailey signed. A tandem of Bailey and Peterson would be great "IF" they have a pass rush. They have none. But with Dumervil coming back and Bowers on the otherside it makes Bailey and the other CBs better. "IF" they had a decent pass rush already I would have picked "Peterson".

When 2 areas of need (ala Pass Rush and 2ndary)Pass rush before shutdown CBs IMO.

Thanks for the feedback. We just thought most posters would check the thread. That hasn't happened. FWIW, I think who ever had the most recent pick should PM the person who is on the clock.

Now onto your pick, I see why Denver would take Bowers. But man, a secondary with Bailey and Peterson would have been scary.

I'm commish in my own Fantasy League and we do a live draft at my house where we have a board and a PA system just like the NFL. Everyone gets to go up to the board when it's their pick, make the pick and announce it on the PA system.

We also have a particular baseball cap that gets passed around for everyone to wear during the whole draft process. It's a "dickhead" cap. The rule is that from the 4th rd on everyone has a coveted player or 2 they really "COVET" and if one of your "coveted" players gets picked then you call that person a "dickhead" for picking him and that person must wear the "dickhead" cap until somebody else's coveted player gets picked. So the object is to keep wearing the "dickhead cap" which means you are a good drafter.

It's a hoot!!:thumb:

Now with all that being said, it's not the big spread of food that I put out, or the draft preparation that takes a ton of time that is the big challenge or problem it's getting 9 other players to be at your house on the same day, same time and that are good players to show up that is the big challenge.

Good communication is essential for a good draft, period.:thumb:

Well I'm not in love with this pick even though I should be. I see Deez already went for him in the other mock and I'm gonna have to agree with him.

Bills select QB Blaine Gabbert

Gabbert has everything you want in a QB prospect IMO. For some reason I've let mock drafters make me think I'm reaching a bit. But anyway, For his coaching career, Chan seems to have problems finding himself a capable QB. The Bills have had their go at 2nd tier prospects like Losman or Edwards and it's time to pull the trigger on a potential franchise QB. The Bills need help getting talent almost anywhere and I'm tempted with making a safer pick like Green or Peterson or maybe even Miller because I'm an aggie fan, but I can't pass on Gabbert if I'm the Bills.

If I'm wrong about Gabbert, I'm still gonna make fun of the MU homers though.

Bengals on the clock

I don't think Gabbert's a bad pick, but why not Newton?

I actually like newton too.... But I like Gabbert better an i'd prefer to root against Newton. Fitz is ok I guess.... But the bills thought Losman was ok at one point too. I think Gabbert will be ready sooner than some think, but some time on the bench couldn't hurt.

If the Bills do pick him, it will definitely make for good competition at that position but I really think Fitz proved his worth with very little support.

The Bills offense had some weapons(Jackson, Spiller, Johnson and Evans). Their D needs a lot of help, though, and they need a DL now that Stroud was released.

I think the Bills could do what the Bengals did, have Newton on the bench for the year like the Bengals did with Palmer. They both have/had decent starting QBs.

Potential JaFatAss and Young drama queen attitude especially with the lastest comment Newton made about being an icon and entertainer I think it was? That just confirmed for many GMs and owners regardless of talent that this kid is allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll about himself. Gabbert's the typical prototype NFL QB not to mention faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar more mature.:thumb:

True, they need help on D:thumb: But Fitz showed some serious "sackswingin his brassballs" and got progressively better as the season went on. Which is why I think they will go D with their first pick.:thumb: But I can see where they would pick Gabbert as well.

I don't think Lewis is a bad HC. Is he a great one? No, but I think he's mediocre. The problem starts with Mike Brown. He needs to hire a real GM.

With the 4th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft...the Cincinnati Bengals select:

A.J. Green, WR, University of Georgia.

I'm not taking a QB here. Cam Newton doesn't fit Jay Gruden's offensive gameplan......at all. Jerome Simpson is a young, up-and-coming receiver but he's not a true #1. A.J. Green gives Carson Palmer (if he comes back) a legitimate weapon that isn't a fucking head case. If Palmer doesn't come back....the Bengals will have to find another QB in the draft.....but with Gabbert gone.....there isn't one here that's worth the 4th spot. Green is one of the best prospects in this draft.....and it fits a need. Win/Win situation for the Bengals.

With the 5th pick in the 2011 Mock,

The Arizona Cardinals select....Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M.

I honestly think the Cards will try to trade down here to try and get a few extra picks to trade for Kolb and keep Fitz happy. In this scenario, I'm going to assume they are going to sign McNabb or Bulger as a stopgap.

Miller will provide a much needed pass rush from the linebackers and will give the Cards an Impact player they desperately need. I think he'll be a key foundation piece for their future. I would have went with Gabbert if he had fallen, even though I don't believe the Cardinals are going QB in the 1st. Neither Wiz or Fitz will want to tie their future to a Rookie QB.

This is an ideal situation. My team flooded with holes, and there's a good crop of equal talent at many positions. I'd love to trade down right now.

I want to pull the Ponder trigger. Early, but if I believe he's our guy, then I need to get him now before somebody else does. Then I think maybe Newton. I don't think he'll ever get a ring in this league, but he'd put on a show and sell tickets. That's huge for Cleveland right now since King James left. And I just don't believe McCoy is that guy for the future.

Then there's Peterson, Green and Jones. Sounds like a candy store and I'm all giddy.

The Cleveland Browns select Christian Ponder, QB, Florida State

So the player I wanted all along falls to me at the 7th spot. Arguably the best prospect in the draft, this guy is a once in a decade player, who posses not only the raw physical skills, but also the technique and intangibles. He plays the ball well and can come away with amazing game changing interceptions.

With the 7th Pick in the 2011 Alternative Chiefsplanet Mock Draft the 49rs select:

Patrick Peterson CB LSU

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/S1oqIK9cMTY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The 49rs have a terrible secondary, so this pick is an easy one to make. Peterson gives them a potential lockdown corner, who can also return kicks if needed. Another option here would have been a pass rusher. But with miller off the board the value just wasn’t there.

Could not be happier with my choice.

The Miami Dolphins select...Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama

The Dolphins can really use a QB, but I didn't see anything I liked here, so I went with Ingram, who should immediately upgrade their backfield. Williams and Brown are both question marks as to durability and what's left in their tank.

San Diego drafting a RB in the first round for the 2nd consecutive year would be monumentally stupid.

In a great example of being prepared JACKSONVILLE has PMEd me their pick ahead of time.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were looking to nab a top end wide receiver at this point in the draft, but once those two were gone, we had to look in other areas. The Jaguars play in a division that is home to some elite passing attacks, including Manning to Wayne, and Schaub to Johnson. The Jags allowed a completion percentage of 65% in 2010, and other than Rashean Mathis, this team has zero depth at the cornerback position. The physicality of this player will match up well against the tough competition of the AFC South
With the 16th pick of the 2011 CP mock draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado(“Jimmy Smith” …Fitting eh?)

I'll be back with mine shortly, I gotta help serve lunch real fast.

Those fucking Dolphins. My no-brainer pick was Mark Ingram. The Patriots need to get a consistent guy in the backfield instead of relying on scrubs every year.

But however, with my next pick I win this draft. Next year the talk about the planet will be "Did Joey really pick the Offensive(ponder) AND defensive POTY? Well, folks. Yes he fucking did.

I think McCoy can be good in a west coast system, which is exactly what they run.

I follow the Browns more than most because my bro in law is a die hard fan and it gives us something to talk about. They were a completely different team when McCoy played last year than when the other QB's were in.

I would agree McCoy is better than Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhome. I just think when you know you've got something in a draft you take it. Ponder is going to be a huge name and a big ticket seller in a few years. He'll do great. McCoy can be traded off to somewhere where he can be mediocre and get away with it.

On the clock finally. Well, here it is....

Well now here the Giants sit on the clock with a bit of a conundrum, mind you it's a good problem to have. While I considered taking a LB with this pick, instead all of the top consensus OT prospects are still on the board. Now while the Giants still do have some quality depth on the O-line, as a group they aren't necessarily getting any younger....and a few of the guys they do have are starting to become somewhat injury prone. So with the 19th pick in the first round of the CP 2011 NFL Mock Draft, the New York Giants select....

Nate Solder, OT, Colorado

While I also liked guys such as Tyron Smith and Gabe Carimi, Solder just seems like the surest bet to me as far as the top OT prospects in this draft. I think he's got a great blend of size, strength (though he didn't seem to show it at the combine like I thought he might) and even speed. He has a huge frame and moves very well for such a big guy. He's in great shape as well, being a converted tight end and such. I think he is a good blocker in both in the passing and running game and should be a starter for years to come on either side of the Giants O-line. I might have picked Tyron Smith here instead, being as he's a very athletic, technically sound and young OT prospect with such upside. However, I'm not quite sure he's ready to step in and contribute right away. He still needs to bulk up a bit (which shouldn't be a problem considering he already looked bigger at the combine). I'm still just a bit skeptical of him at the next level though until for one he proves he won't get pushed round....and two, he proves that he can play not on RT but LT as well. The only position he's every played on the O-line be it in college, high school, pop warner, whatever, is RT. If I'm spending a first round pick on an OT, I want a guy I'm sure is ready to play the postion. Nate Solder I think is that guy.

With the 19th Pick, the Tampa Bay Bucs select...

J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin

O-Line and RB is also a possibility, but with Raheem Morris being a defensive guy and the DT situation in place from last year's draft, having another piece to help with a pass rush is key. Watt is a guy who has a rushes the QB all the time and can keep contain on the outside on running plays with his long arms. Good pick up by Bucs at this pick in the first round.

Sorry about the wait guys.

So this is a tricky spot for me here. The one player I was targeting and really high on here was Ryan Kerrigan. But obviously hes gone. Its no secret that the Chiefs despite their good season, have a lot of holes on both sides of the ball. I’m tempted to select a WR here, but in my opinion, the strength of this receiver draft after Jones and Green, is in the second and third rounds. Phil Taylor, is also an intriguing prospect who would upgrade our lines. But after careful examination. I just don’t think hes worth the pick here. There are a couple of options at OLB but the top prospects I just don’t like enough. In the end I think Ill just have to stick with Value.

With the 21st Pick in the Chiefsplanet Mock Draft

the Kansas City Chiefs Select OT Tyron Smith

This pick isn’t ideal, but neither is the talent at this end of the draft. By picking Smith the Chiefs have solidified their Offensive line for a long time. Albert obviously takes on Waters position while Asomoah takes on the RG spot eventually. Centre is still a need but one could be had in the later rounds.. The value behind picking Smith at 21 was just too high.

The reason o line is so low in the draft is all the o line are not finished products. Tyron smith is raw, soldier while big still needs to learn pass protection, and colzano isn't strong enough to hold the point of attack. Not sure of my spelling here you get the picture.

I'm saying to take them too high is to take a major risk. Each year one side of the ball is more dominant in the draft. This year there are too manny quality d lineman and lbs.

ok reason for san diego pick Kerrigan has fluid hips and can translate to OLB in the 3-4. Along with shaun Phillips that makes for a great one two combo pass rush.

Baltimore: It may be too early to pick hankerson here but the kid has potential. I liked what I saw in the east vs west game how he made difficult catches and seems to be a playmaker which baltimore loves. I was tempted to pull an ozzie newsome and take best player available which would have been mallet but with flaco that would be a waste of a pick. Hankerson will help flaco and the O extend drives and come up with the big catch.

Ok here goes. When I look at the Bears possible list for a first round draft pick it would probably have to include, O-line, D-line and WR. However, the biggest of those three needs to me seems to be the O-line. I mean just ask Cutler, who was sacked more than a bag of groceries at Walmart last year. The O-line play was so poor that one would think that a first round pick should be able to walk in and provide immediate help. As much can not necessarily be said of any other position on the Bears. Recognizing this, with the 29th pick in the first round of the CP 2011 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears select.

Derek Sherrod, OT, Miss. St.

To me Sherrod just seems like the best fit here and decent value as well. There's just too much uncertainty at the moment regarding where Chris Williams should play or if the Bears should just cut their losses with him entirely. However Williams is still young with enough upside that I envision the Bears aren't done with him just yet. In this instance the Bears are going to let Williams try to man the fort at the RT position (barring he doesn't get injured again). Meanwhile Derek Sherrod should come in and become an instant fix at LT and protecting Jay Cutler's blind side....especially with Tice (who I happen to think is a great o-line coach) working wonders with him. Frank Omiyale who at times was serviceable last season, at other times became a bit of a false start machine. I think he'd be better suited in a backup role behind either or both Sherrod or Williams.

Things I definitely like about Sherrod are he has great hand strength, quickness, wingspan and awareness. He effectively engages his assignment in pass protection and though he may not be over powering, he's still a solid run blocker as well. He kind of reminds me of a poor man's Michael Oher and I'm sure the Bears or probably more so Jay Cutler, would be thrilled with that.

I sent a pm to Shogun as well.

That's a fine pick as well. I did for a second think about taking Wilkerson to the Bears as a potential replacement to Tommie Harris. I just kind of figured that if if I wanted one of the top OT prospects and I think Sherrod is a top five OT prospect that I had to take him there. I think there will be other potential replacements for Harris in rounds two or three should I decide to go that route. I did like Wilkerson alot though. He's versatile enough to play DE or move inside DT and would have fit in nicely in the Bears defensive scheme. Shame he played at Temple and didn't quite get the recognition he perhaps deserved in college. He should be a good player at the next level though.

I can't believe Castonzo lasted as long as he did, so I was hoping at least Sherrod would make it to the Packers who, even though they drafted Bulaga last year, still need to improve their OL and think about Chad Clifton's age. That no longer being an option, the Pack turns to the defensive side of the ball and takes the third rated CB.

A lot of Bills fans would be pissed at me for picking Gabbert over Dareus and I was gonna go for Heyward, but Kurt grabbed him up. Tempted to go with another DE, but...

Bills select ILB Martez Wilson Illinois

The Bengals continue to revamp their offense. Benson isn't consistent and he really isn't worth another big contract. I would go with Ponder here but some asshole took him in the top 10.

The Cincinnati Bengals select Mikel LeShoure, RB, University of Illinois.

The Cleveland Browns have holes everywhere and after thinking on it most of the day, Torrey Smith makes alot of sense. After all, with the newfound investment in Christian Ponder, he needs somebody to magically teleport the ball to. However, I'll have to wait untill round three because I got to fill holes on defense.

The Browns Select Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon State

Good pick. I was really hoping he was gonna slide to the end of round two so the Bears could consider drafting him to replace Tommie Harris. That was just wishful thinking as it turns out.

I probably wont be able to post my pick tomorrow until around 8pm. But with 5 teams in front of me still it shouldn't be a big deal.
