Capt. Kirk wakes up shuttle crew

(CNN) -- At the intersection of science fiction and science fact was William Shatner on Monday.

As James T. Kirk, the fictional captain of the Starship Enterprise, Shatner voiced the opening credits of the original "Star Trek" TV series and several movies since 1966.

The 79-year-old actor reprised his role to wake up the crew of the space shuttle Discovery at 3:23 a.m. ET Monday.

"Space, the final frontier. These have been the voyages of the space shuttle Discovery. Her 30 year mission: To seek out new science. To build new outposts. To bring nations together on the final frontier. To boldly go, and do, what no spacecraft has done before," Shatner said over the "Theme from Star Trek."

This is the spacecraft's final scheduled mission. It has made 39 flights and 13 journeys to the International Space Station.

The space shuttle Discovery is scheduled to land at Florida's Kennedy Space Center shortly before noon Wednesday -- one day later than originally scheduled.

The nearly three-decade shuttle program is scheduled to end later this year.

Great way to wake up the crew on their last voyage. I am sad to see the shuttle program go.

I'm not because I think it's ridiculously antiquated and needed to be replaced 20 or more years ago.

It is probably pretty obvious that I love space flights, and I'll miss watching the shuttles fly, but it was a bad idea in the first place.

I agree, advancements need to be made, but nothing is being done in this area.

Sure there are but currently, it's in the private sector.

I don't want this to end up in the DC but the main reason why we haven't seen huge technological advances that were forecast in the 60's Space Race is because the presidents elected during the past 40 years haven't made it a mandate.

Also, Americans are constantly told they're over-taxed and NASA budgets are consistently cut.

The shuttle has become nothing more than a delivery truck for the ISS. Well, not really "has become." It always has been just that.

As a 4 year-old watching the first lunar landing in 1969, I thought we'd have hotels in the Earth's orbit by no later than 2000.

It's been terribly disappointing.
