If you are talking about energy, even a relatively minor earthquake is far more powerful than the biggest nuclear weapons. If you are talking about loss of life, I would doubt that you'd have 100K+ deaths from this, which was essentially what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki when you factor in radiation-associated illnesses.

Yeah, but there are more factors at play than just the size of the earthquake. Even a huge quake will not always cause a Tsunami like the one in Indonesia, and Japan has a much better warning system.

I watched this documentary one time about an island off the African coast. There is a giant sheet of granite (the size of a 50 story building) on that island that is sloughing off a mountain and, according to the geo-physicists who are studying the deal, when that granite finally falls into the ocean, they expect a potential 90 foot tidal flood to hit the US.

Amazing.

We can only hope Fred Phelps and company are headed to the airport to go tell them all how much they deserve this.

MSNBC says they had a 30 second warning before the earthquake? How is that possible???

In the clear light of day, it's obvious. The earthquake occurred off shore. The seismic wave had to travel to the coast where people lived. If there were sensors near the spot of the quake, the message that a quake had occurred could travel at the speed of light in advance of the seismic wave, there by giving people a short warning if a system were in place to do so.
