The nice thing about songs written for people with no vocal range is that anyone can sing them. For example, I can sing this song and hit every note, which makes me feel good about myself. But when I try to sing "Dream On" by Aerosmith, I can't pull it off very well and feel bad about myself. So when the karaoke machine starts up, which song do you think I'm going to pick?

I don't listen to "pop" music anymore. Frankly, I'd rather press my ear against a Kodiak Bear's ass while he farts than listen to most pop stuff.

Still, Mr. Reaper16 is pretty much dead-on with this deal. This is possibly the worst song ever conceived. If Mozart were still alive, I have no doubt whatsoever that he would hire some dude from New Jersey to arrange for this girl to eat a hand grenade.

The nice thing about songs written for people with no vocal range is that anyone can sing them.

That was my reaction when I heard it: It's atonal so any gawky 12-year-old girl can sing it.

Now how can you make an insightful comment like that, but not recognize the musical brilliance (and historical significance) of The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again"?

I'm actually pissed off at you guys right now. There is no fucking way you could seriously hear Rebecca Black's "Friday" and think it worse than either of your submitted songs. "Shut Up" has a certain propulsive drive to it that all pop-punk dreck does, so it has that going for it. "Whip My Hair" isn't even a bad bubblegum pop song at all. It's pretty dynamic, actually. Compared to "Friday" it sounds like fucking King Crimson.

Spring was never waiting for us, girl
It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance
Between the parted pages
And were pressed in love’s hot, fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants

MacArthur’s Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don’t think that I can take it
‘Cause it took so long to bake it
And I’ll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

I recall the yellow cotton dress
Foaming like a wave
On the ground around your knees
The birds, like tender babies in your hands
And the old men playing checkers by the trees

MacArthur’s Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don’t think that I can take it
‘Cause it took so long to bake it
And I’ll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

~ ~ ~ ~

There will be another song for me
For I will sing it
There will be another dream for me
Someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warm
And never let you catch me looking at the sun
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
You’ll still be the one

I will take my life into my hands and I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes and I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire
And my passion flow like rivers through the sky
And after all the loves of my life
Oooh, after all the loves of my life
I’ll be thinking of you
And wondering why

That could make it in the "Worst song that some people actually like" category, but it doesn't compare to Friday in overall badness. I wonder what it's like to release a song that is so bad it's INSTANTLY an internet meme. At least Rick Astley had a few years before people destroyed his reputation.

You are quite correct, Mr. JD10367. Our behavior in this thread has been both unseemly and immature. After all, it's merely a song and, as you say, the girl is only 13 years old.

Now that we've settled that, let us hope she never sees 14.

Oh. My. Christ.

This is amazing. Apparently that video had 3 million hits yesterday & it's well over 7 mil right now. Yeesh.
It's the kind of universally-recognizable suckage that can galvanize a nation. It's how America works: in order to distract us from the tragedy in Japan, we collectively turn to an even bigger tragedy.

Unfortunately, Melodyne and Autotune have made it possible for people that cannot sing to actually find an audience.

It bothered me nearly 15 years ago when Jennifer Lopez's engineer told me it took him 40 hours to Auto Tune her vocals for each song on her debut record but today, I just don't care.

If people somehow find enjoyment in these over-produced and severely under-talented performers, I am not one to judge.

You know, I had a whole shit ton of "I got this by a mile" worst songs ever prepared for this thread. Goddamn if the OP didn't kick the ass out of it. Rep. That was, if not the,one of the worst songs ever. I sat there watching that shit, and I was like Indica stoned couched locked. Gruel running out of my open mouth...I couldn't move, so was I amazed at the utter stupidity of that song.

I'll throw this out, but it's not as bad as "Friday.":

For those not in the know by now, Black is just one of a number of wannabe pop stars coming from a production company called Ark Music Factory. The "factory" holds casting calls for young teen girls, and if you're what they're looking for, you're flown to Los Angeles, where you're written a "hit" single, record it and make a music video.

You're song "Friday" is inspirational. Period.
It includes all the makings of a hit: 1) it's educational (teaches the days of the week), 2) it incorporates real life issues that everyone struggles with (which seat to take), 3) it's fun (even repeats the word "fun").

I suppose that it is possible that Ark Music Factory can write a song worse than "Friday." They did, after all, write "Friday."

I've been scouring through the painful catalog of Ark Music Factory on YouTube. So far, its been a bunch of terrible pop songs. Nothing else so far reaches the level of ineptitude and banality that "Friday" does.

No, that's the dumbest song ever written. Different contest.

I feel compelled to post the lyrics. They're even dumber written down, if that's even possible.

The sun and the moon, and even Mars
The Milky Way and ****ing shooting stars
UFOs, a river flows
Plant a little seed and nature grows
Niagara falls and the pyramids
Everything you believed in as kids
****ing rainbows after it rains
There's enough miracles here to blow your brains
I fed a fish to a pelican at Frisco bay
It tried to eat my cell phone, he ran away
And music is magic, pure and clean
You can feel it and hear it but it can't be seen

Music is a lot like love, it's all a feeling
And it fills the room, from the floor to the ceiling
I see miracles all around me
Stop and look around, it's all astounding
Water, fire, air and dirt
****ing magnets, how do they work?
And I don't wanna talk to a scientist
Y'all mother****ers lying, and getting me pissed

(Are you a firm believer in miracles)
Magic everywhere in this bitch
(Do you notice and recognize miracles)
It's all around you, you don't even know it
(Are you a firm believer in miracles)
Magic everywhere in this bitch
Shit's crazy
(Do you notice and recognize miracles,
So many miracles, the magic miracles)

The bus was merely a metaphor.

You have to read deeper into the meaning of songs than the mere words. Songs are complex. In fact, if someone can dig up the lyrics to this one maybe we can all analyze it together.

Rain Man
03-17-2011, 11:37 AM
Okay, here are the lyrics. Let's start analyzing.

I'll start with the first stanza, in red. Obviously it's about childbirth (ooh ooh) and about the hope that parents have for their children the first time they lay eyes upon them (yeah yeah).

(Yeah, Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Ark)
Oo-ooh-ooh, hoo yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah-ah-ah
Yeah-ah-ah
Yeah-ah-ah
Yeah-ah-ah
Yeah, yeah, yeah

[Rebecca Black - Verse 1]

7am, waking up in the morning
Gotta be fresh, gotta go downstairs
Gotta have my bowl, gotta have cereal
Seein’ everything, the time is goin’
Tickin’ on and on, everybody’s rushin’
Gotta get down to the bus stop
Gotta catch my bus, I see my friends (My friends)

Kickin’ in the front seat
Sittin’ in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?

It’s Friday, Friday
Gotta get down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin’ forward to the weekend

[Rebecca Black - Verse 2]

7:45, we’re drivin’ on the highway
Cruisin’ so fast, I want time to fly
Fun, fun, think about fun
You know what it is
I got this, you got this
My friend is by my right
I got this, you got this
Now you know it

Kickin’ in the front seat
Sittin’ in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?

The good thing about this song being a generic piece of shit is it can't stay stuck in most people's head for more than five minutes or so. Otherwise there would have probably been a startling number of suicides since this song was released.

(Yeah, Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Ark)
Oo-ooh-ooh, hoo yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah-ah-ah
Yeah-ah-ah
Yeah-ah-ah
Yeah-ah-ah

Analysis: It's about childbirth (ooh ooh) and about the hope that parents have for their children the first time they lay eyes upon them (yeah yeah).

[Rebecca Black - Verse 1]

7am, waking up in the morning

Gotta have my bowl, gotta have cereal
Seein’ everything, the time is goin’
Tickin’ on and on, everybody’s rushin’
Gotta get down to the bus stop
Gotta catch my bus, I see my friends (My friends)

Analysis: The early part of the stanza is about enlightenment. Her eyes open, things are fresh to her. However, real-world pressures bring her down from this enlightenment ("go downstairs"), and drag her into the mundane (eating cereal). She is then forced into conformity with society (going to the bus stop to catch the bus, which is full of other people who have done the same), but then she sees an alternative, a means of escape.

Kickin’ in the front seat

I'm actually pissed off at you guys right now. There is no ****ing way you could seriously hear Rebecca Black's "Friday" and think it worse than either of your submitted songs. "Shut Up" has a certain propulsive drive to it that all pop-punk dreck does, so it has that going for it. "Whip My Hair" isn't even a bad bubblegum pop song at all. It's pretty dynamic, actually. Compared to "Friday" it sounds like ****ing King Crimson.

I'm assuming you meant "and not think it worse". But I agree. Those 2 songs aren't that bad. Although Whip My Hair has some dumb lyrics, too.

Lyrical analysis, continued.

(Yeah, Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Ark)
Oo-ooh-ooh, hoo yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah-ah-ah
Yeah-ah-ah
Yeah-ah-ah
Yeah-ah-ah
Yeah, yeah, yeah

Analysis: It's about childbirth (ooh ooh) and about the hope that parents have for their children the first time they lay eyes upon them (yeah yeah).

[Rebecca Black - Verse 1]

7am, waking up in the morning
Gotta be fresh, gotta go downstairs
Gotta have my bowl, gotta have cereal
Seein’ everything, the time is goin’
Tickin’ on and on, everybody’s rushin’
Gotta get down to the bus stop
Gotta catch my bus, I see my friends (My friends)

Analysis: The early part of the stanza is about enlightenment. Her eyes open, things are fresh to her. However, real-world pressures bring her down from this enlightenment ("go downstairs"), and drag her into the mundane (eating cereal). She is then forced into conformity with society (going to the bus stop to catch the bus, which is full of other people who have done the same), but then she sees an alternative, a means of escape.

Kickin’ in the front seat
Sittin’ in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?

Obviously, this is about self-determination. Will she ride in the back seat and let others guide her life, or will she sit in the front seat and lead a purposeful life?

Friday, Friday
Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin’ forward to the weekend

[Rebecca Black - Verse 2]

7:45, we’re drivin’ on the highway
Cruisin’ so fast, I want time to fly
Fun, fun, think about fun
You know what it is
I got this, you got this
My friend is by my right

This coming from the guy who only posts sexual innuendos when he's on here. You're a grown man, sitting around on the Internet, making sexual comments about every actress/model/porn star out there. Get a fucking life, for crissake.

No, not really. After unearthing the epiphany about self-determination, there is nothing else that Rain provides. No pithy commentary about the egalitarian unification that RB is mandating, no social speculation about the token inclusion of the colored gentleman at the very "end" of the video/song...

It's my opinion that Rainman "disappeared" at the point of unearthing the self-determination thing. I think just reading and trying to analyze the lyrics is a gateway to Hell. Rain is now most likely sitting in a black leather speedo, chained to a leg of Liberace's piano, lubricating the pedals as the pianist serenades Mephistopheles.

My housemate did a DJ set at a packed local bar last night. He played this song at midnight, replete with airhorn noises and screeching eagle sounds. The people who were in on it were laughing and trolling the rest of the bar, who looked around with horror at each other. It is universally recognizable as a shitty song, even to drunk people.

She's 13. She don't know squat.

However, with over 16 million YouTube hits, she's a freakin' rock star. She's recently been on Good Morning America, The Today Show and a plethora of other news casts and interviews. As a 13 year old.

She'll be dating Justin Bieber in a month, have her own Disney show inside the next six months and be doing Saturday Night Live and Jay Leno and SXSW all within the year.

Biggest club hit of 2011. Reaper's already started it down that path.

She could play this one out for a decade plus.

And I defy anyone to convince me that her song is any worse than:

It’s Friday, Friday

Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend
Friday, Friday
Gettin’ down on Friday
Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

This is about death. Friday represents the end stages of our life, akin to the end stages of the week, and then she talks about "getting down" (dying). Everyone is looking forward to death. It completes the initial birth/life/death cycle of the early stanzas.

Disturbing...

Hey!..HEY!..HEY!!

Do any of 'em have iPods or Nintendos?
Do any of 'em have a cell phone in their hands?
Do any of 'em smoke a doobie?
Do any of 'em collect thousands of dollars in bonuses from our government while their company is filing for bankruptcy?

Give 'em alot of credit for doing without any of this stuff during the shooting of this soon-to-be-classic video. C'mon, let's hear it!

In all serious, every time I hear her start singing my first gut reaction is that she's singing in a robot voice.

I always think it's complete over-exaggeration when people complain about modern music, but the fact she got to perform this for ABC may be the end of music. Just shut it down.

Snoopy and the Red Baron is a fun song. "Friday" is an exercise in torture. They could break any member of the taliban with it.

That song has so much depth and emotion. I want to see the basic premise transformed into a movie. A thriller about an insecure fourteen year-old girl looking forward to the weekend, while trying to evade a pedophile.

Then back to Florida a few days later, it makes no sense at all, that company is just plain stupid.

Because it is so bad that people can't believe it. It must be shared. Everyone must know, for our own protection. Its the same mental reasoning that explains why we teach our kids about poison, choking on things and life in Oakland.

Don't let that Dane McCloud guy know about this. I hear that he is both an actual audiophile and a word that gets changed to audiophile via the CP word filter.

This thing is like a train wreck. You know it's horrible, but for some reason you can't turn away. And then the images (or in this case, the chorus) get stuck in your mind, probably for weeks.

It will probably end up as some sort of twisted classic, like Toni Basil's 'Oh Micky'. God help us all.

It appears that I misspoke. Considering that the creepy guy in the car is a co-founder of Ark Music Factory, a guy who helps write these terrible songs, he is certainly NOT a proper audiophile.
