Owsley Stanley, Artisan of Acid, Is Dead at 76

Owsley Stanley, the prodigiously gifted applied chemist to the stars, who made LSD in quantity for the Grateful Dead, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Ken Kesey and other avatars of the psychedelic ’60s, died on Sunday in a car accident in Australia. He was 76 and lived in the bush near Cairns, in the Australian state of Queensland.

His car swerved off a highway and down an embankment before hitting trees near Mareeba, a town in Queensland, The Associated Press reported. Mr. Stanley’s wife, Sheilah, was injured in the accident.

My first trip was a hit of Owsley's 2nd Batch back in '66 when I was 13. I had such a great time & figured if one hit was so much fun then next time 3 hits would be superuberfun. Didn't quite work out like I figured. Just take one, folks - Owsley knew what he was doing.

So I hatched another plan... set my alarm 30 minutes early, take a hit & then go back to sleep. That way I'd be already be coming on when I woke up, "miss" the school bus & go meet my hippie friends instead. It worked! Except for the school bus part... my Uncle put me in his car & drove me to the dentist appointment that I forgot about. I was totally peaking when he shot me up with Novocaine & my face disappeared. Then he pointed some really bright lights at my eyes & started drilling. After that, I had to attend school without a face. Try maintaining through that on inferior non-Owsley acid - can't be done!
