He did make Haren throw pitches, but the 3-0 and 3-1 pitches were freaking meatballs right down the middle. I know the point of taking there, but as the #3 hitter, I'd be looking to kill those.

The Jim Edmonds catch against David Howard is the best catch in baseball history.

It is. And this is a good time for me to repeat this story:

I was at the next day's game, and between innings they showed a replay of the catch on the videoboard. The stadium gave Edmonds a standing ovation, and as he was standing in CF he tipped his cap.

One of the coolest things I've ever experienced. Classy on both ends.

Couple of things...you do realize it's been over 25 years since they made the playoffs...everyone expects them to lose 100+ games this year...it's a cold night out...I expect a lot of people bought tickets for tomorrow's doubleheader instead of for tonight's game.

I also realize that 13K for the 2nd home game is pathetic though.

I understand that they haven't made the playoffs for over 25 years. But it's a Friday and the second game of the season. I could understand if this was in the middle of the season and they were playing a team like the Indians, but it isn't and they didn't play the Indians.

yep, given how terrible the team has been for decades, it is incredible they still draw as much as they do. A whole lot of teams that were a whole lot better than KC often drew worse than the Royals.

KC fans have proven that when a team comes anywhere close to contending (2003), they will show up.

That was one of the best games I ever attended, and the game-winner caught me by surprise. With Frenchy coming up to kill whatever Kila might start, I was already doing the pitcher math wondering how many extra innings we would have to survive to get around the order again. Once he hit it, it was obvious that it had a chance, but I wasn't expecting it.

Only thing annoying was sitting close to a guy trying to impress a couple girls with his vast Royals baseball knowledge. Unfortunately, he was a clueless idiot and it was distracting to try to ignore his loud proclamations of fail. ("Who is KilaKa'awhoever? Must be a new acquisition, I dont recognize most of these guys". "Ooh, he blew him away with the high heat!" *radar gun says 68* "The problem with this team is they just never want to play small-ball!") Fortunately baseball einstein got bored and cold, and left at about the 3rd inning.

In 2003 the Royals started out 9-0 and were 11-1 after 12 games.
They ended the season at 83-79 in 3rd place. I think that winnning record
is why Mike Sweeney stayed on with the Royals. Then the back problems started.

I'd be totally fine with an encore performance of 2003. I'm buying those late-summer early-fall tickets anyway, so it would be nice if, as an utterly shocking added bonus, there was also some crazy delusional reason to hope before they collapse in August while we all patiently wait for 2013.

On an unrelated note, I'm also going to tomorrow's game, mostly because I want to see that exhibition Omaha-NWA game, so if someone else wants to start that game day thread, go for it, dont wait for me. I'm on an extended (and enjoyable, thanks to Kila) baseball vacation.

Comparing Jayhawk fans to Cardinal fans is low by any standard. Haven't we suffered enough this year already?

Nice win. I only watched as far as the home run on Francis.

Where did I mention the Cardinals in this thread? I'm just curious why such a nice stadium didn't have 50% capacity for the 2nd game of the season and on a Friday.

Concern troll is concerned.

I wonder how good the Cards attendence would be if they missed the playoffs for 26 years straight?

I'm guessing both Al and Pete are at the game, somebody fire up today's game thread.

Just so I have this clearly in my mind:

You just watched a great pitchers duel. The Royals win it on KK blast in the 9th and your one and only contribution to that is:

"Gee you'd think there would be more than 13k guys".

Attendance? Who gives a fuck what the attendance was for game 2 of an 81 game home schedule? Again, I'll tell you: A Cardinal fan.
