I've filed on the 15th electronically for the past several years, and although it did take 1-2 days to get confirmation from the feds I was never penalized.

When the 15th hits on a weekend you have until Midnight on the next business day to file - which is the 18th of this year.

When I grew up, Friday was a weekday.

I guess Victoria Black's song is so insidious that even the IRS can't resist.
Friday, Friday
Gettin' down on Friday
Everybody's lookin' forward to the weekend

Put mine in the mailbox today; motherfucking mailman didn't take my shit. So I put it into a blue box nearby. Hopefully that shit gets postmarked before the deadline.

That is true in general (Friday was the 15th) but Emancipation Day is a DC holiday and why the filing deadline this year is the 18th.

If you are paying and not e-filing you should send it some way that gives you proof of mailing (certified mail/fedex). Mailman taking your shit isn't really enough.

If this work the same as the efile system we use, and most other systems I know, when you submit the return it is given a postmark and that is when it is deemed received.

E-filing doesn't guarantee they'll get your return, either. I went through that last year for my '09 return. They received my voucher and check but had no record I had filed a return. I had to go back and dig up proof that I e-filed and after sending a couple of faxes with proof, they were satisfied. Save your e-filing info, all of it.

I don't understand why someone getting a refund would wait until the last minute.

I'm a procrasturbator. I'm getting 2k back and just filed yesterday. Just kept putting it off, even though it only takes a couple hours.

E-File before April 15 would be a good choice. While the software will say that it was sent to the IRS, it is your responsibility to contact them, if you have some doubts that it wasn't sent correctly or something.

Well, I got the email today saying that the IRS received my info and approved it so I should be good.
