Well, just did this two years ago. Last night, I buried my best buddy Aare, our Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. I buried her next to our Lab up by the garden. I miss that beast already. Great dog and loyal companion. The kids were very attatched and having a hard time. That might be the hardest part. She was only 2 1/2 years old. she had an undiagnosed case of Addisons disease in which her body was unable to produce stress hormones like cortisol in times of stress. We took her to get spaid. She crashed about 24 hours later and died of heart failure. Godspeed Aare! You will be greatly missed!
First pic is bringing her home, second is about a year ago.

Only 2 and a half... that is horrible! I lost my dog 3 months ago and she was 11 and half, and that was very rough. Although she lived longer than most rotts, it still went too fast. I can't imagine how much worse it is for you losing a good dog that soon.

Very sorry to hear that, especially at such a young age. Best wishes to your kids.

We put our rottie down on Monday. That dog never let my daughter out of his eye sight until she was around eight. She's 12 now and it just crushed her.

Losing a pet is hard, especially for kids who probably haven't really experienced death too much. Hang in there, and I hope the kids can bounce back.

man, I'm sorry for your loss as well. Sure is easy to get attatched to 'em. I was her "person", so she followed me like a shadow. That makes it hard also

Aw jeez, dude. I remember when you brought her home. She was beautiful. I can't believe she's already gone. But your poor kids are getting some valuable life lessons at an age where they're resilient.

yeah, I remember you guys were still working around the driveway and there was a huge pile of dirt by the house. That little bugger couldn't be taken outside without her running to the top of that dirt/mud hill and proclaiming herself Queen of the mountain. And of course, getting those giant feet totally caked in mud. memories

Yeah, that's the worst part I'd think. At 2 yrs you just get the dog trained how you like it.

I have an 11 yo dog at home that does exactly what I want, usually without even being told. His 16 month counterpart is another story though.

Just FYI, we have a large Great Pyrenees with joint issues. We've been giving her Deramaxx and she's been acting like a puppy again. The meds are quite expensive but her joy is worth it.

P.S. you can't spell "spayed." Might want to work on that.

The Swiss river Aare is a very appropriate name for that dog type. Learn some geography.

tooge,

With deepest sympathy over the loss of your dear friend and pet.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Author unknown...

The Rainbow Bridge is a popular poem that continues to the touch hearts of grieving pet owners.
Best wishes, Dylan

Tough deal man, sorry to hear it.

One day I'll get a Swissy or a Berner. I'm partial to the Bernese myself, but they're essentially the same dog with long hair (and a spottier health record due to breeding). The Bernese has always looked a little 'goofier' to me, whereas the Swissies can have a bit of a dour look to them at times.

Sennenhund's are great dogs pretty much across the board. You're dead on about the kids thing - they're essentially like labradors with a protective streak. I've never heard of them actually biting, but they'll make it damn clear that they're not to be trifled with if they feel like you're a threat to the kid.

My gf has a pack of geriatric dogs. The next year is not going to be pretty. I'm dreading it. I know this is no consolation but at least you didn't have to make the call. That's what really sucks.

I'm awfully sorry man. It's damn hard when you loose one of those hairy, drooling, farting, shoe chewing, hole digging, barking, mud tracking in the house, four legged, biting, bad breath pains in the ass. You'll see him again someday.

I wish my Max was here to do all of that again. RIP buddy January 17, 2010

that first pic was when she was about 12 weeks old. Second was about a year old. she was about 105 lbs when she died, which is about average for a female swissy. Males get much bigger though.
