Second or third cousins? I'm doing a family tree for a project. My dad's cousin is my second cousin, so would her children be my third cousins?

Don't put them on your tree, seems easier.

I always thought if they are your dads 1st cousin, that makes them your second? guess not.

I was adopted by my grandparents, making them Mom & Dad. Makes it weird to explain that my biological mom is my sister, & my uncles are my Brothers. So my cousins are my nephews.

Well my dad's cousin I always was told is my 2nd cousin. But this is her children. Didn't know if that made them my 3rd cousins.

Your Dad's cousin is your second cousin.

Your second cousin's children would be your third cousins.

Your Dad's cousin is your second cousin.

Your second cousin's children would be your third cousins.

Na, your dad's cousin is your first cousin, once removed. That person's kids would be your second cousins.

In case the diagram I posted isn't clear enough...

1. The "number" of cousin (first cousin, second cousin) is determined by how many generations you have to go above your parents to find a common ancestor. If the common ancestor is a grandparent, that's a first cousin. If the common ancestor is a great grandparent, that's a second cousin.

2. The "removed" part is a generational thing. If they're in the same generation as you, there's no "removed." If it's a cousin's kids, that's a generational difference, so that's one-level removed.

It's all pretty clear if you have a true family tree diagrammed out. The "number" is determined by how many lines you have to go up before to find the common ancestor (minus one for your parents). The "removed" part is determined by how many horizontal rows you have to move to get from Person A to Person B.

For the record, this is correct:

your dad's first cousin is your first cousin, once removed. Her children, your second cousins.

These are all incorrect:

my cousins children are my 2nd cousins twice removed.

Yeah I guess they would be my second cousins since we share the same great-grandparents, and first cousins share the same grandparents.
