Sly Mo was affected by the switch in offense and his injury. I am not saying he would have ever been a pro bowler.... but if the Chiefs didn't change offenses, I think he would have been a solid player.

Some of it is probably an inconsistency in talk vs actions of the regime. Pioli talks big about the right 53, character, and all the prototypical patriot way stuff, but when it comes down to it you can't build much of a football team doing that (and neither could belichik). So when you draft a diva receiver in round 1 and a dopesmoker in round 3 guys will jump all over it.
