Notes: Played linebacker, tight end and running back as a prep in Oregon where he was named the state’s 4A Defensive Player of the Year as a senior before rupturing his Achilles during the track season. Recruited as a tight end and redshirted in 2006. Played all 13 games in ’07, starting seven, and caught eight passes for 124 yards (15.5-yard average) and one touchdown. Played nine games in ’08 without recording a reception, missing four midseason contests when he was nursing a groin injury. Moved to defensive end in ’09 and tallied 23 tackles, five tackles for loss and three sacks with two forced fumbles in 13 games (five starts). In ’10, started all 12 games and produced 44-8-5 with two passes batted down. Team captain. Graduated.

Positives: Athletic — former offensive player who is able to open up his stride. Good lateral movement. Is intense and plays hard. Competes against the run and gives good effort in pursuit. Has a 36-inch vertical jump and bench-pressed 225 pounds 33 times at his pro day.

Negatives: Tight hips. Average flexibility. Could stand to get stronger and improve his finishing strength. Ordinary edge burst. Not a polished pass rusher — needs to develop counters. Does not play with pop or power in his hands. Can play with more consistent pad level. Average production. Instincts are still developing and does not show a keen understanding of blocking schemes. Spends too much time on the ground.

Summary: Collegiate defensive end and converted tight end with enough athletic ability and intensity to warrant consideration as a developmental 3-4 strong-side linebacker.

NFL projection: Priority free agent.

2010: One of the fastest ends in the Pac-10 Conference ... recorded the fasted 10-yard dash time on the team during testing last spring ... originally a tight end, but made the move to the defensive side prior to the 2009 season ... co-team captain. 2009: Began the year in the rotation before winning a starting spot at midseason ... started five straight games ... had three sacks, tied for the team lead with Stephen Paea ... forced two fumbles ... Pac-10 Academic Honorable Mention. 2007: Started seven games, making eight receptions for 124 yards for an impressive average of 15.5 ... scored his only career touchdown on a fourth quarter 11-yard pass from Sean Canfield at Arizona State ... caught a 30-yard pass late in the first quarter at Oregon that set the Beavers up at the 8-yard line in what would lead to a 14-7 advantage ... Pac-10 Honorable Mention Academic. 2006: Redshirt after suffering an injury in track prior to arriving at OSU.

LAKE OSWEGO: Rivals.com four-star athlete ... 4A Defensive Player of the Year as a linebacker and honorable mention as a tight end ... 23 receptions for 303 yards and five touchdowns as a senior ... Anyone think Miller could be our new blocking tight end? Used to play TE, moved to DE. I'm sure as a DE he learned how to be a lot more aggressive and physical, which could help his blocking ability.

Came to OS as a 4 star defensive end. Had a torn achilles though, so redshirted.

Moved to TE as a freshman but tore his achilles again, so didn't do much.

Did okay as a TE as a soph but nothing special.

Requested a move back to DE as a jr. It was a dire need so it was a good move. Had to learn under fire because the Beavers had nothing but Paea on the DL.

Has gotten better over the last two seasons but is still raw. Has a quick first step but still falls for misdirection (should get over that with experience).

I wouldn't be surprised if Pioli sees a raw, young Vrabel. I think he will start out as a good special teams player while learning the OLB position (another position change). Is a very good athlete so it will be interesting to see if he can make the transition mentally.

Why would you draft this guy so early when you could have had him much later? It appears as though he could have been picked up as a free agent. Very solid draft and happy, but there were several solid players there when they took Miller. Seems like a real head scratcher to me.

Because even in the 5th round it's like playing spin the bottle. Sometimes you'll get the class hottie, other times you get the the town fat chick, it's damn hard to predict which will be which now.

Buncha hatahs, the lot of you

Media call with Chiefs 5th round pick Gabe Miller
GABE MILLER: “Hi, how’s it going?”

Q: Good. How are you?

MILLER: “I’m great. I’m excited.”

Q: What do you know about the Chiefs? What do you think they have in store for you?

MILLER: “I’ve been following the Chiefs for a long time. I love the tradition they have going on there and I love the fan base there. They have the loudest stadium in the whole league. Whatever the coaches have in store for me is what I’m going to do. I’m going to come in there and work my butt off every day and make myself better and try to make the team better.”

Q: Are you kind of a hybrid defensive end where you can stand up and rush from the outside or are you strictly a defensive end?

MILLER: “Yeah, I kind of see myself as a little bit of a hybrid – either an outside linebacker or a defensive end. Like I said, wherever the coaches put me that’s where I’m going to be and that’s where I’m going to give my full effort.”

Q: Do you have any experience in the 3-4 defense in college or high school?

MILLER: “Yeah, in high school I played a 3-4 outside linebacker in high school.”

Q: What do you like doing better?

MILLER: “I kind of like standing up. I think it’s fun. I feel like it opens up your vision, you get to see everything a little better. With that said, if they tell me to put my hand on the ground and rush the passer I’m more than willing to do that. Like I said earlier, whatever they want me to do I’m here to do.”

Q: What did you do more of in college? More stand up or put your hand on the ground?

MILLER: “I did more of a true defensive end in college so I had my hand on the ground more often than standing up.”

Q: Are you better against the run or rushing the quarterback?

MILLER: “I think my strength is my speed and my get-off and for those reasons I think those translate to the pass rush pretty well.”

Q: Did you talk to Coach Haley or Scott Pioli today?

MILLER: “Yes I did.”

Q: What did they say to you?

MILLER: “They said they were happy to have me with the Chiefs. I went out there and visited a couple weeks ago and just had a wonderful time there. They treated me great. I felt like I really got a good feeling for Coach Haley, Mr. Pioli and the whole organization. I’m just happy that I’m getting the chance to be a part of it.”

Q: Have you met with defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel yet?

MILLER: “Yes. I met with him as well. Great guy, very knowledgeable about football. Obviously it’s a name you’ve heard around the league for as long as I can remember so he’s a big name in the league and like I said, a very knowledgeable mind and I can’t wait to get in and explore that mind a little bit and get out there and do what he tells me to.”

Q: Do you have any idea when you might be coming to Kansas City?

MILLER: “I haven’t heard anything yet. I think that may be the next topic.”

Players with Miller's strength, athleticism, work ethic, intelligence, and passion for the game usually get drafted higher than draft "experts" predict. I think the "experts" downgraded Miller more because of his injury history and lack of college experience at a position that he will likely play in the NFL than his play at OSU. Where on the "experts" draft boards would Miller have been if he had been invited to the Combine and put up the same #s he produced on his pro day.

With Houston picked for OLB opposite Hali, I could see Miller being moved inside for the Chiefs. I think if Miller had tested at the combine with the ILBs, the "experts" would have downgraded him from a third to a fifth round choice due to his injury history and lack of college experience at LB.

I could see Miller starting at ILB in 2012 if the Chiefs decide to play him inside.

Here he goes against the no 1 tackle selected in this draft.

Tyron Smith (RT) #70 vs Gabe Miller (LDE) #99.

The clip is really about Paea but just look at LDE instead of the marked player to see Gabe against elite competition.

He looks like he has the physical tools and with good defensive coaching he could be a decent player. Needs work with his hands and technique.

That said, I think he was drafted for OLB depth and the possibility of being good in two or three years.

That said I like the pick. Seems to be able to get pressure on the QB and looks disciplined in his assignments. Hope he can stay healthy
