I think we need another spinoff thread....someone start the "Where were you 10 minutes after you heard Obama announce that Bin Laden was dead?"

Driving in my truck at about 7:30. Brother is an "intel asset" and let me know. When my phone shows an 11 digit number it'll be something pretty important. Pretty cool to learn about stuff before the news does, but I've gotta STFU until the news breaks it. Tonight was really tough not to spread the word with people besides my immediate family.......just awesome!!!

Well. When I first heard it, I was sitting in my recliner. 45 minutes later, when the President actually came on to make it official, I was taking a shit.

I missed it. So therefore, if I answered I would be foretelling the future (if I saw this on the news tomorrow or something). But if I had seen it, I would have been sitting on my ass, in my chair.

I was asleep, discovered it here.

I'm not sure it's going to be the historic event that I've seen some people suggest, like it's going to spark economic recovery and vault obama into a second term. Hell, I've never even been 100% that al qaeda was responsible for 9/11. But it's certainly being built into something gigantic by media and social media, and that may be all that history requires.

Considering we have spent the better part of a decade and who knows how much money pursuing him. He has been the face of terrorism from the beginning of our war on terror. So yeah I would have to say it is kind of a big deal~

Yes he has been listed longer than that, and also claimed responsibility for the first bombing of the twin towers. However 9/11 made him a much larger target~

Considering we have spent the better part of a decade and who knows how much money pursuing him. He has been the face of terrorism from the beginning of our war on terror. So yeah I would have to say it is kind of a big deal~I didn't say that as well as I should have. It's historic yes, no question about that, what I'm saying is that I don't know that it's going to be a juncture in time at which future generations will point back and say "that's when everything changed". Like I said, I don't know that this is going to spark economic recovery or propel the president to a second term or end the war on terror or any of the other things I've seen people suggest. Maybe (hopefully) I'm wrong about that and this will later be seen as a day that moved America forward into a bright future, but I'm not entirely sure just how different the world is right now than it was 12 hours ago.

That's what I was trying to say. Sort of. I'm still not sure I've been able to exactly say what's in or on my mind. And there's no politics to this or anything like that. Maybe I'm just cynical in my old age.

About the only thing this is certain to spark is a terrorist strike. The only real question is where and to what magnitude. It's coming of that pretty much everyone can be certain.

In the long term this will make the world somewhat safer, but in the short term things just got a whole lot more dangerous.

I think that's a fair point. There will be a response, somewhere (not necessarily in the US). Which doesn't mean he didn't need to be got.

And in that light I hope that nobody is misconstruing anything that I said above as trying to portray the death of bin Laden as somehow being a negative. It isn't and I'm not.

I'm rather surprised at the publicity over this. I can't remember any other time in my life when I've seen so many people be overjoyed by the death of someone. It makes me feel almost a little unpatriotic in that I can't get myself excited in any way over this news. I suppose it would mean more if I thought this would really change anything. But right now it feels a little like Bush's "Mission Accomplished" statement.

When I see my friends and fellow Americans come home from that shithole over there, I'll gladly start cheering. That seems like a much better reason to crowd the streets. But right now it just doesn't feel right. Hopefully that doesn't mean I'm a bad American...
