View Full Version : NFL Draft ChiefsPlanet's Definitive (TIC) NFL Draft Ratings

I've rated every NFL team's draft and ranked them according to how they compare to a couple of pre-draft mocks. The two mocks I used were the Official ChiefsPlanet Mock (http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=242250) (created by the collective brilliance of our local draft junkies and the WalterFootball mock (http://walterfootball.com/draft2011.php) (which is easy to find online for free, unlike Mayock's or Gosselin's).

I also used a revised version of the draft value chart (http://walterfootball.com/nfldraftology321.php) (DVC) found on the WalterFootball site.

Methodology:

Every play drafted is assigned a "cost" based on the value assigned to his draft position by the DVC. He's also assigned a "value" based on his position in each of the mocks. The team that drafted that player then gets a score based on the difference between his cost and his value. A positive score indicates a "steal" and a negative score indicates a "reach".

For example, consider DeMarco Murray:

He's taken 64th overall in the Official ChiefsPlanet Mock for a "value" of 452.

He's taken 91st overall in the WalterFootball Mock for a "value" of 290.

In the real NFL Draft, he's taken by Dallas with the 71st overall pick for a "cost" of 396.

Compared to the Official ChiefsPlanet Mock, Dallas gets a score of 452-396= +56

Compared to the WalterFootball Mock, Dallas gets a score of 290-396= -106

The team's overall score is calculated by adding the scores from each of it's draft picks. The higher the score, the better the draft.

Results using the Official ChiefsPlanet Mock:

01. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2347.5
02. New Orleans Saints 1738.5

A couple of notes:

1. Obviously these results would change if a different mock was used or if a different version of the Draft Value Chart was used.

2. I did a similar calculation for the AFC West teams using the WalterFootball Mock in this thread (http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=244645). The results differ from that analysis slightly because I used a revised version of the Draft Value Chart here instead of the older version that I used in that thread.

3. The WalterFootball Mock came out right before the NFL draft. The Official ChiefsPlanet Mock was put together in March. The impact of this time difference can be seen in the values of players who either rose or dropped on the basis of late information. The most obvious and significant of these was the Da'Quan Bowers leg injury. He was taken 2nd overall in the Official ChiefsPlanet Mock whereas he was taken 24th overall in the WalterFootball Mock. Since New Orleans took him with the 51st pick, they get credit for a big steal in the WalterFootball analysis (+405 pts) but it's nothing compared to the steal they get credited for in the Official ChiefsPlanet Mock analysis (+2230 pts).

4. There were more picks in the draft than the Draft Value Chart covered so I decreased the value of each pick beyond the range of the DVC by 0.5 pts.

I would hope they came out on top using their OWN board and having a top five pick in each round.

Call in tomorrow and tell them that ChiefsPlanet has you at #25, barely ahead of the division cellar-dwelling Chargers. Better luck next year.

No. For some reason I can't get any pages to load on my KnowMo2724 account and if a page does happen to load it takes two or three minutes to do so, or it will take me to the Chiefs Planet index page.

I actually find the people here hilarious and enjoy CP more than Broncos sites. The Orange Mane is too slow paced and half the posters there just want to argue about how bad the Broncos are or how Pat Bowlen has been secretly running the Broncos draft room and not letting the front office draft DT's for the past 30 years:rolleyes:.... The official Broncos board sucks.

Yes, if any given teams GM rates all of the teams draft by THEIR OWN FARKING BOARD! They almost always will come out on top. How retarded is this statement?

Also, it would be interesting to see the results through Mel Kiper or Todd McShay's big boards. They both gave the Chiefs a subpar grade for this draft, and I can't decide if it's because they're crazy or just plain stupid. An analysis like this might lend some evidence one way or the other

This is a nice tool for evaluating a draft from a value standpoint. It doesn't take need into account. Of course, I would contend that its the GM's job to move up\down in the draft in order to maximize both need and value. Pioli did an amazing job of that, probably the best I've seen since the Chargers wound up with Tomlinson and Brees.

Yes, and even in terms of value, it's only useful to the extent that the mock it's based upon is a reasonable reflection of value. Many mocks try to take need into account in order to get the picks right which would undermine the notion of value for the purpose of this analysis.

Why is there such a huge discrepancy for Houston?

Because he was taken 20th overall in the Official CP Mock whereas he didn't go until the 3rd round in reality. WalterFootball had him going in the 3rd round just a few picks after the spot the Chiefs took him. This is probably another case like that of Da'Quan Bowers where late information (about his failed drug test at the combine in this case) caused a re-evaluation of his value. That re-evaluation is reflected in the WalterFootball Mock, but not in the CP Mock.

The way I'd read it is that the CP Mock reflects his value based on talent alone whereas the WF Mock reflects the riskiness of a guy who was too foolish to clean up for the combine.

patteeu

Another big mover is the Carolina pick of Cam Newton. In the Official ChiefsPlanet Mock, Newton wasn't taken until the 8th pick whereas WalterFootball and reality had him going #1. Due to the large drops in value at the front end of the draft, this 8 spot difference makes a huge difference (1000 pts) in the score Carolina gets for making the pick.

That's the biggest reason Carolina goes from being last when ranked on the basis of the CP Mock to 17th when ranked on the basis of the WF Mock.

Time is the factor which forces the CP mock to select based on talent.

We start the CP mock in early March, almost a full two months before the real thing. A lot happens over that time that affects the status of a player.

In some regards, I wish I hadn't pushed a few years back to go to a full 7 round mock. Had we stayed with a 2-3 round mock, I believe the results would be much more realistic because we could start the process much closer to the actual draft date.

I love how Kiper gives us a bad grade, but he says that Stanzi will have the best career of any QB in the draft.

If you get the best QB in the 5th round, you had a great draft.

I had Terrell McClain (Carolina's 3rd rounder) going in the 7th round to the Packers. Do you think that also had something to do with it?

Yeah, that one caused another 224.5 pts of difference between the CP and the WF model. The CP model indicated that the McClain pick was a -408.5 pt reach while the WF model showed it as a -184 pt reach (WF had him going in the 3rd round, but it was the last pick of the 3rd round instead of the first*).

The other big one was Brandon Hogan, Carolina's 4th round pick. The CP collective braintrust didn't have Hogan on it's board at all, but WF nailed it with the right pick. Difference of 255 pts.

______________
* Interestingly, that last pick in the round was also Carolina's so WF had the guy going to the right team but with the wrong pick.

Ahahahaha they miserable usered him ! ROFL ROFL

Dunno who compiles this one. It's through ESPN insider, but I have a membership. I think it might be an amalgamation of both McShay's and Kiper's boards.

Apologies for the jumbled mess. The information is there, though. The final number in each column is the player ranking, and they're listed in order. I don't know how to make it nice and neat, that's all.

...

OK, I went through and did the AFC West teams using that data and here's what I got:

Kansas City Chiefs 228.0
Denver Broncos -69.5
San Diego Chargers -340.5
Oakland Raiders -779.0

The Raiders took a serious plunge because McShay/Kiper really didn't like their first 3 picks (according to this data). Here are the first three players the Raiders took followed by the spot at which they were taken and M/K's ranking. The number in parentheses is the value difference between the two.

Stefen Wisniewski 48 / 146 (-514 pts)
DeMarcus Van Dyke 81 / 115 (-154 pts)
Joe Barksdale 92 / 139 (-182 pts)

The other big difference I notice here is that McShay/Kiper really like Denver's first 7th round pick. They had Virgil Green ranked at 79 but the Broncos took him with the 204th pick overall yielding a +320 pts. That seems weird, but that's what it looks like.

Has KnowMo and Rex Ryan ever been seen in the same room?

:thumb: Nice!

Looks like McShay and Kiper are just stupid idiots, that's all.

I would hope they came out on top using their OWN board and having a top five pick in each round.

Goddamn boy. You are ****ing stupid.

Look, I know he's a blind homer but what he said is no dumber than the premise of this thread. For one chart Patteeu is using a Draft mock site. Meh. There are loads of sites with loads of mocks and they differ substantially after the first round. On the other chart Patteeu is using the members of Chiefs Planet to grade the picks. Now that is incredibly laughable. Who really gives a flying fuck what the CP draftniks think about pick value except the Chiefs fans of this board when the data appears to reflect well on KC? Strange as it seems KnowMo has a valid point. The Bronco FO value ranking on their picks is just as valid as this, because it's equally slanted.

You're just jealous that the Chiefs' draft was so much better (on paper at least) than the Broncos'. I suspect that you'd be hard pressed to find a reasonably mainstream mock draft that would change the relative outcome of this analysis this year. This is ChiefsPlanet so it made sense to use the Official CP Mock for fun, but it wasn't intended to be the final say in the matter. The WalterFootball Mock isn't the final say in the matter either, but it's an objective baseline relative to the Broncos and the Chiefs.

Meh, the Chiefs won the draft in the AFC West and it really isn't close :thumb:
